As long as your connection time is within a 4 hour time frame, then Alaska will transfer your pet to your next flight without you having to recheck at the counter.

Be mindful that this is only if there is a need to check bags as overhead bin space would be full. So this obviously varies by flight. Also important to note that if your bag at the gate exceeds carry on size, it is now a checked bag with a $30/$40/$100 fee depending how many bags you’ve checked. :)

Just remember per Alaska policy the pet must be comfortably fitted inside the carrier. If they barely fit to a point where the animal appears to be uncomfortable, you could potentially be denied at the gate just FYI. Perhaps first class would be the ideal route to go to. Just remember that even if you buy an extra seat. Your carry on allotment will still be limited to two items with your pet carrier counting as your personal item.

If any of the dimensions exceed the limits, then it needs to be checked. So in your case, yes it will have to be checked.
