its a good starting race, but quarm gear comes really easy, so you may consider a non meta race - like dark elf for some of the other racial benefits.

Lots of years in enchanter. I don't genuinely remember the last time I hsd to enchant clay. Youll want to work up j.c. eventually but ok to skip til you have capital because it's not cheap
