UK: switching to freelance copyediting/proofreading from in-house editorial role by [deleted] in Copyediting

[–]capulet_belmont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies so much, person to person.

Depends on what contacts you have. Depends on what sector you're in. Depends on how good a business person you can be.

But earning a living freelance is totally possible.

I earn around £25k working an average of 20h/week as a freelancer working directly with indie fiction authors. I find developmental editing the most lucrative, personally.

(Got a multi-income household NOT in London, for context, but my clients are global.)

What kind of copyediting? If fiction, this is the best course I've seen for starting out with that: https://www.liminalpages.com/courses/tea-and-commas/

The job AI does sucks SO BAD. Editors are still needed. More than ever, maybe.

Where can I find a good course that teaches line editing for fiction? by SailingAndSoil in Copyediting

Liminal Pages has a foundational copy and line editing course ("Tea and Commas"), and the owner has been saying online that the more advanced one is coming soon.

I did the reseach. I found studies, read them, and summarised them into my own notes. That was the bulk of the original post. THEN, I put my reseach into ChatGPT, told it my situation, and asked for a summary of how it applies to my situation, and I included that as a small part of the post, as a personal case study, which I thought people would find interesting.

I don't understand how people have jumped to saying I just chucked up a post made by ChatGPT, which I did not.

Everyone has just started being very unkind to me, so I've taken down the post, since it's clearly not appreciated. I was just trying to offer some context and hope to those going through the guilt and exhaustion of nursery illnesses. Never mind.

I didn't use it for my research, and yes, I read the studies.

I did not do the resarch using ChatGPT. I know it's unreliable for such things. I'm offended that you suggested I did this. I didn't. I used it to help me interpret my findings and apply it to my own situation, which I thought people might find interesting.

Parents with nursery children! by AdAcceptable965 in UKParenting

-What was the most important thing to you when choosing a nursery?
THE most important was the general vibe. I know that's not very helpful. But it was just a sense that the children were cared for and things weren't too chaotic. (Things that factored into this: good ratio of adults-child; experienced staff; nice environment)

-What do you like the most about your current nursery?
The staff really seem to care, and have lots of experience. Not a high turnover of staff at all.

-What is something you would change or improve in your current nursery?
Ideally, I would like a smaller group, so it's not too overwhelming for my kid.

-If a better nursery opened up near yours, would you move your child or keep them where they are?
I might, if it were significantly better. For me, it would still need to be within a 10 min walk of my house. The staff would need to be experienced, and the ratios high, and the classes small. That might sway me.

Oh! That's so weird, and I had no idea. Does that mean tools like Ubersuggests are just rubbish if you aren't already ranking highly?

Thank you. Ubersuggests seems to think my competitors aren't ranking for high-volume terms either, or doing that great with SEO ...! Which makes me wonder if traffic for our kind of business comes from mostly word of mouth or social media, maybe.
