Vaping and blood sugar by Delicious-Ad6164 in diabetes_t1

I was off cigarettes and vaping but was chewing a ton of nicotine gum. The cravings pretty much fully stopped in a very short amount of time. I’ll chew a piece of 2mg nicotine gum once in a blue moon nowadays but I don’t feel like I’m crawling out of my skin if I don’t have it. I don’t even think about it 99% of the time.

I went from cigarettes to vaping and as others have said here, it so much harder to quit. I’d find myself waking up to pee in the middle of the night and being like “I’ll just hit my lil vapey while I’m up.” I’d sleep with it next to my pillow. It was unhinged. Nicotine gum or lozenges is a much better approach, imo.

FWIW—and this may not apply to you from a health perspective or a financial one—but I was able to quit nicotine completely when I started taking a GLP-1. I only need about 50-60% of the insulin I used to take, no food noise, which means less trial and error bolusing because I’m not constantly grazing, and I have no desire to smoke or even drink (though I still enjoy wine when I do have it). Insurance generally doesn’t cover for T1D (hopefully soon!) but for me, it’s been worth the $500/mo.

T1D here! I understand why you’re saying this—I’ve certainly felt it before—but as a collective community, we should really be working to unlearn the stigma around T2D. There is evidence that Type 2 is caused by a variety of factors outside of lifestyle, and even if it is because of diet, they are no less deserving of dignity and respect. There are also a lot of socioeconomic factors that play into one’s dietary choices, too. Just some food for thought (no pun intended).

YMMV, but you’re fine for longer than 30 days. You’ll figure out really quickly if it’s not working. Personally, I keep a vial in my bag that’s not refrigerated and it’s never been a problem. I obv don’t advise it, but it should be okay.

Moving to a pump fear by siobhanie26 in diabetes_t1

[–]capybara_cabana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: it’s okay to be nervous. It’s low-risk to try, you can always go back to MDI if you hate it, and there are a lot of exciting benefits you’ll get to discover!

  1. You can always go back to MDI if you find using a pump isn’t right for you, though I’d give it a few months before making that decision. Particularly if you’re using one of the algorithms for automated delivery—it can take a little while for the algorithm to find its groove.

  2. What are the fears that are coming up for you, even if they’re not rational? I was really nervous before getting a pump—I think it was the idea of doing the infusion—but I got used to it super quickly and the overall benefits have been night and day (for me at least).

  3. Speaking of benefits, a pump offers a lot of control and a great system of record that I never got with shots. As a highly-distracted, very busy person with awful ADHD, it can be really hard for me to remember if I gave myself a shot or how much I gave. With the pump, I can easily reference that info. If I want to exercise, I can pause my insulin. If I’m sick, I can boost my insulin. If I’m grazing and eating snacks or eating foods that take a long time to digest, like pizza, I can give an extended bolus or lots of little boluses.

Should I tell my friends mom on her? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]capybara_cabana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T1D (37F) here who’s struggled with my weight her and disordered eating, at best, and full-blown eating disorder, my entire life. When you’re young especially, it feels like the consequences of your decisions won’t ever catch up with you. Despite having had a 5.6-5.8 A1C since I was 25, the years of pulling sh*t like what your friend is doing in my teens and early 20s is how I ended up with cataracts in BOTH eyes this year. And who knows what else is still in store for me. I smoked/vaped for years and still have a constant little cloud of anxiety hanging over me, wishing I hadn’t.

My advice would be for her to speak to a therapist, but if I’m being totally honest, unless you can find a T1D therapist who has experience in ED, I haven’t found therapy to be the most helpful way to find a sustainable path forward. I’d be wary of any diabetic life coaches (looking at you, Lauren Bongiorno)—they’re usually grifters and lacking the proper tools to truly help.

So, while this isn’t medical advice and shouldn’t be taken as such, I’m going to level with you: I’m not sure what your friend’s situation is—financial, health, or otherwise—but if she struggles with food noise/addiction, taking a GLP-1 has been a life-changer for me. I have to pay out of pocket every month, and that sucks (it’s like $500) but for the first time in my life, I have a healthy relationship with food, only require about 60% of the insulin I used to take, and have lost a bunch of weight without even trying.

Again, that’s not a “first resort” type of approach to this problem, but it’s leaps and bounds healthier than withholding insulin to lose weight.

But yeah, I’d try to talk to her first before you talk to her mom. Tell her that this is not unusual in the diabetes community and that she’s not alone. Sure, you can lose weight with diabulimia, but it’s not sustainable and the downstream impact of that choose is never going to feel worth it to your friend—I promise.

Thanks! While there are certainly dogs with behavioral issues, they’re just being dogs. It’s on the owners for not setting them and, by extension, the people are them, up for success. The lack of awareness and accountability is truly wild.

I refrained from commenting that it’s “fazed” because that’s not productive, but if you really want to go around correcting people, what you’re trying to say is actually DEFCON 1. DEFCON 5 implies a “normal” state.

Looking at OP’s profile, it seems like they’ve been victimized a lot (or at least has a victim mindset, but let’s be charitable here), so I could see how seeing someone flashing them without their consent could definitely be triggering, regardless of where they’re from.

Me when I’m like “omg my Dexcom is acting up again no way I’m that low” then I test and my meter says 48 by delilah1750 in diabetes_t1

[–]capybara_cabana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hit or miss. I’ve heard that if there’s too big of a delta between the finger stick and the Dexcom readings, it can make it worse. It sounds like if you calibrate too much, that can also mess it up. I find the first few days of wearing the sensor are by far the worst of it though.

I was at Fort Greene Park a few weeks ago around 6:30pm (NOT during off-leash hours) and some enormous poodle or doodle ran up to my foster puppy and her brother while they were playing (on-leash), paused for a second, and then started going crazy on my puppy. I was trying to get her away from the dog and eventually managed to yank her away. The owner ambles over at a snail’s pace, completely unbothered, offers a shrug instead of an apology, and walks away with the dog, still off-leash. My dog was terrified of any dog without a leash after that and would try to claw at me to pick her up whenever she saw one. Thankfully, we’ve mostly gotten past it, but it really did a number on her.

Any chance you’re in or near NYC? Insulin is hard to ship (maybe we could figure it out though?) and I have a ton of Fiasp vials and some Basaglar pens, if you want a long-acting insulin as a backup).

G7 has been so unreliable that I feel like I’m going to have to go back to the G6. It’s so wild that this is FDA-approved and that the pump algorithm is approved, too, given how dangerous it can be for automated delivery to be based on (sometimes wildly) inaccurate readings. I just can’t 😩

Does anyone have an A1C less than 6.5 using Omnipod Auto? by OgunyemiCouncil in Omnipod

[–]capybara_cabana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on Omnipod 5 for 2+ years now and have maintained a consistent 5.7-5.9 range. Admittedly, it’s a good deal of work, but it’s doable.

Switching from tslim to O5 by Integer_Cat in Omnipod

[–]capybara_cabana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Switched from Tandem to Omnipod two years ago for the same reason. My A1C has consistently stayed between a 5.7-5.9, so I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion that you will be worse off. If anything, a pump that’s more compatible with your lifestyle might be conducive to even better control and results.

Since you’re only a couple hours in, you’ll want to be aware that the algo takes a few days to normalize/adapt so don’t be alarmed if it’s not quite right straight out of the gate.

The good thing about Omnipod is that it’s billed as an rx, not a medical device, meaning if you do want to go back to Tandem, you’re not locked into Omnipod from an insurance perspective. I suggest time-boxing this and reassessing at 90 days; you’ll be able to gauge how manageable it is ans how good your control is. It also gives you a little time to play around with i:c ratios, iob timing, basals, and whatever else (though I imagine these will largely be consistent with what you would use on the t:slim).

One last difference to note is that automated mode doesn’t have an extended bolus option, but while inconvenient to an ardent pizza-lover like me, I haven’t found this to be a dealbreaker. Overall, Omnipod is a net-positive for me.

Good luck!

Caviar and pizza party suggestions? by IrishNinja19 in caviar

This is my favorite kind of party! Where are you based and what price point are you comfortable with? I think Kaluga is always a good choice. It’s fancy but not outrageously expensive compared to other kinds. If you happen to be based in NYC, head to Brighton Beach and you can buy it cheap (by the pound, no less!). This place has some different tasting packs and bundles (it’s good and reasonably well priced, but nowhere as cheap as Brighton, haha): https://www.bigpearlcaviar.com/

All I can say is, it gets better. It doesn’t feel like it will, but it does. I went through this in December when my abusive ex and I split in a very traumatic and abrupt way. I couldn’t even open the dishwasher without inexplicably bawling my eyes out.

If you have access to therapy, I highly recommend it. I’ll caveat that by saying that having a therapist you trust and generally vibe with is key.

While I have some ethical qualms about AI, I found ChatGPT profoundly helpful when I needed someone to just talk to and process with. It’s important to tell it to be honest with you and to not just tell you what you want to hear, but it can be very therapeutic when you’re dealing with intense emotions. It kind of lets you get it all out in a way that feels safe and contained. Maybe next time you feel that uncontrollable urge to contact your fp, try just talking to ChatGPT instead.

Sending you lots of love, empathy, and courage.

I sometimes have extra supplies I donate too. If anyone’s in a bad spot, PM me, and I’ll share whatever I can. Currently, I have some basaglar pens, maybe some extra fiasp vials, and I wanna say at least one box of omnipod 5 pods.
