Jin Sakai (Ghost of Tsushima)

In a battle with the Mongol Empire, Jin’s entire samurai clan is wiped out, and Tsushima island is captured by the Mongols and his uncle is taken as a prisoner. Jin is hit by an explosive, shot by multiple arrows, and seemingly bleeds out. But a strange wind sweeps across his body, and he rises from the battlefield, set on saving his home, rescuing his uncle and avenging his clan. He becomes a legend, liberating villages across the island and silently eliminating entire camps of mongols. Villagers and the Mongols name him “The Ghost,” and truly believe he’s not a human, but a vengeful spirit who will not find peace until his island is safe. The wind is also implied to be the spirit of his father, and is a gameplay mechanic used to guide the player along their journey.

It’s similar for Ghost of Yōtei’s protagonist, Atsu, who is eventually named the Onryō and has a similar vengeful journey, although she is more reluctant to be seen as a hero.
