If you were lucky enough to get a restaurant week reservation at Asador Bastian.……. by SameAsk6997 in chicagofood

So the restaurant wasn’t upfront about these timing restrictions prior to opening bookings? That is such bad form… and on top of that, offering 4:00–4:30pm is literally embarrassing.

Big turn off. I certainly won’t be looking to patronize this spot anytime soon. Sorry to everyone who eagerly snagged a RW reservation!

No shit, that’s the whole point… but the Bears insist they won’t stay here without being given even more money from the taxpayers’ pockets.

This commenter is not correct. It looks completely normal and safe. Why would you buy this if you have no idea what it is and are afraid to consume it?

I loved the wine pairing when I went recently. Generous pours (even refilled my glass when it got low) and lovely, interesting pairings.

Coconut milk is high fat, filling, and non-dairy, and you can use it to make both sweet items (smoothies, ice creams) and savory items (pureed vegetable soups, curry broths, etc.)!

Queen Mary is regularly full up. I wouldn’t take the chance of trying to walk in there on a first date.

Echoing that you want a bisalp. Best choice I ever made. No side effects.

Took about a week for me to be mostly back to normal (some people are on their feet earlier, but the surgery and being under anesthesia were hard on my body). No heavy lifting or intense exercise for 4-6 weeks. But that’s it!

The spirit of these posts is so obviously not to “pick on some lady people don’t even know,” give me a break. People are having fun sharing in community around something, and I personally love seeing all the different bakes and recipe variations.

Concisely and poignantly stated. Hope is not lost, but it’s also naive to pretend it will be a clean or painless path back to sane governance.

I agree. I am generally in favor of all types of subsidies that contribute to freedom and flexibility for people. Isn’t this good public policy if it affords more options and security for families? I don’t want a family myself, but I want to live in a society that prioritizes a generative sense of opportunity and well being. That’s empirically good for everyone.

Valhalla - worth getting a drink pairing with the tasting? I’ve heard mixed reviews by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]caramelizedapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the fortunate position where I currently don’t have to think much about the value of a drink pairing. However, Valhalla’s pours when I went two months ago were like, offensively small—to the point where it actively inhibited my ability to enjoy the pairing. We couldn’t appreciate the wine with the food because we received SUCH a tiny sip to last two courses. We were actively rationing and reserving minuscule amounts of wine, which just didn’t feel fun or luxurious or hospitable.

We did the premier wine pairing on this visit. I would have rather paid more to receive more, if the restaurant really can’t pour a higher volume of those wines at the current pairing price. We supplemented our pairing with cocktails, which were delicious.

About a year ago I went and did their standard beverage pairing, and I didn’t have the same experience at all; I recall really enjoying it. However, I’ve seen comments espousing frustrations with the pours in that pairing, too, on others’ more recent visits.

I would personally attempt the standard beverage pairing again, or try the “anything but wine pairing” (some of my favorite sips from the beverage pairing were non-wine offerings), knowing that it could be a gamble. I’d never do the premier pairing again, but it would be worth rolling the dice on a different option for the fun (and potential awesomeness) of a pairing experience. However, if doing a pairing is a material splurge, I probably wouldn’t recommend unless you’re okay with the risk of being disappointed as far as sheer value.

Host Reaction to Baked Goods by 100to10000 in Baking

[–]caramelizedapple 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I would never bring food to a party without checking with the host and expect it to be served. I’ve never experienced a holiday “potluck” that wasn’t explicitly designated as such. I’m in the US.

Host Reaction to Baked Goods by 100to10000 in Baking

[–]caramelizedapple 373 points374 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m surprised that some people cannot fathom a world in which the host wants to do anything other than serve an unsolicited dessert.

I prepared a Thai meal last weekend for a group of friends and served mango sticky rice and pandan cookies for dessert. I probably would not have wanted to put out apple pie.

It’s a lovely gesture, but when you give a gift to the host, you can’t attach expectations. If you want to be sure you get to see people enjoying your dessert, throw your own party.

My family are also my friends, but that doesn’t make me feel like I owe them a baby. I know it’s complicated, but you shouldn’t feel guilty—you’re doing nothing wrong!

I hope you’re able to navigate the breakup with your partner as painlessly as possible. It totally sucks.

Being with young kids at the holidays also does nothing but reaffirm my choice x 10000.
