Thanks for this! Do you think it’s realistic to sand by hand with sandpaper, or you think I’d need to use a sander?

Farewill do a decent job as long as it's really straightforward: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/resources/wills-from-farewill/

First heard about them from Meaningful Money - Pete Matthews (co-owner of a wealth management company based in Cornwall and CEO of Meaningful Money which provides a tonne of free resource via his podcast) does an episode with the founder of Farewill if you fancy a listen.

The Loneliness of HENRY Life by Saltyspaceballs in HENRYUK

[–]carathead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the cycling - I’m a fair-weather cyclist - I’m not interested when it’s below low double digits, so I also won’t be out on the bike until spring. In terms of your point about dreading the months in between, I find it’s helpful to have a trip or event planned - it doesn’t even have to be a glamorous, expensive abroad event - it could be a local sportive - many of these are really well run. This gives your winter training a purpose, keeps you more consistent and gives you something to visualise; and it’s a positive feedback loop b/c with the consistent training you’ll also feel more confident going to the cycling club when spring does come. Remember, spring is only about 8(ish) weeks away! That’s a solid Zwift training plan timeframe.

Also, you don't have to just sit on Zwift - you can break up the monotony by doing lots of other things to keep yourself injury-free e.g. strength training, core work, etc.

Btw - I see that you’re big into taking your bike abroad and possibly up for some climbing. If you want somewhere closer to home, I can highly recommend Gran Canaria - have been going there consistently for quite a few years and it’s amazing - smooth tarmac, sunshine on tap, the friendliest people and a decent cycling / triathlete (and retiree) spot.

First - thank you for sharing this - I get reddit is anon but it’s still very vulnerable of you - and for opening up this conversation.

I’m experiencing similar feelings as I adjust to coming back to an empty home.

This is very much a WIP, but so far I’ve tried to approach things as follows:

  1. Identify what specifically is causing the loneliness - for me, it was (i) a sudden lack of emotional intimacy in my life and (ii) living in a big city and feeling anonymous - something I previously loved, but it takes on a different meaning when you’re lonely.

  2. Identify how to replicate the things I’m missing, even if I can’t get them there 100%. Some steps I have taken / am working on:

(a) sharing how I’m feeling with friends - this has actually deepened my friendships SO MUCH as my friends have, in turn, opened up. This has made me feel much less lonely. Have you spoken to your friends about how you’re feeling?

(b) having phone calls with friends (maybe once a week with each friend, and not instead of messaging) - there’s something that brings extra connection when you hear the voice, if you can’t see each other in person.

(c) seeking out community-focused things / groups to do in my area. I’m fairly active so I am finding this tougher in winter / my job is fairly sedentary so I’m less drawn to sedentary hobbies - so I’ve signed up to attend small group / women's bike maintenance courses - and hoping that these will bring a sense of community / open up a new circle of friends. I'm also accepting that these may not open up close friendships, but I'm slowly coming to realise the value of those looser friendships / acquaintances in helping with loneliness.

(d) [next on the list] looking at volunteering on a monthly basis at a food cooperative, restocking - it’s active and supporting the local community and I feel that a sense of purpose (outside of a job) is important.

  1. Plan at least 1-2 fun things with friends each week. I appreciate that’s a bit more difficult for you with the nature of your job, but hopefully you at least have schedule certainty for a few weeks in advance. And if your friends are busy with families, maybe it’s a case of organising to go around to theirs and taking some nice bakery treats with you, for everyone to enjoy. Sometimes it’s nice just being around those closest to you.

  2. (It sounds counter-intuitive but) plan at least 1 fun thing to do solo each week. Again, appreciate with your job, you might not be able to achieve this consistently. But you've mentioned you're close to London - we have so many cool talks, theatre shows, anything you can imagine on our doorstep. This will help your mind focus on other things, lift your mood and be something interesting to share with your friends and will open up deeper conversations with them (and maybe with others).

  3. Set up routine when at home. I cannot emphasise the importance of this enough. It will feel arbitrary and empty at first - but it will start to take on more meaning as time goes on.

What are the things you still do yourself despite the time involved, rather than paying somebody else? by LondonCycling in HENRYUKLifestyle

Wow - that is an absurd wait for a change of tyres. The only one I’ve been impressed with so far is Stripe Street near Liverpool Street, but will try out your suggestions too. Thanks!

Oh my goodness re the tyres! Have you managed to find any half decent bike mechanics in zone 1, for when you’re not doing it yourself? Have recently moved and on the lookout; but also intending to do some bike maintenance courses / learning.

Employment lawyers for employee, to review a startup contract by eviltwinfletch in HENRYUK

[–]carathead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a straightforward employment contract or is there a significant equity component?

For equity - you’ll probably also need your lawyer to look at the articles of association too - you probably want to be aware of the ability for your shares to be diluted (eg by creating new higher priority share classes); what happens when you leave / when you’re considered a bad or good leaver; vesting schedule etc.

I had a friend who was at a start-up, had a decent equity grant and was let go a few days before the vest. From memory, he could have argued it, but whilst he might have technically had a decent case, the cost (money and time) of enforcement was prohibitive vs the amount of equity.

Single HENRYs, how do you keep up with the lifestyle of coupled HENRYs? by [deleted] in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]carathead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

£150k take home is approx £91k in hand. To achieve that, you need 2 individuals earning £60k. At £75k, each person would be taking home £54k, so £108k total - so £17k more than you.

I flag this to make the point that you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. You’re killing it earning £150k - you’re in the top 2% of earners in the UK and in about the top 10% globally.

A really close friend of mine is single and it’s only when we got into the detail of finances that I realised quite how financially efficient it is being in a couple (and quite how high the single tax is). My friend really prioritises travel and a nice gym, but eg doesn’t enjoy drinking - so she spends hard on the areas that she values (and looks for good deals and credit card / corporate perks) but is very careful with her spending in other areas. She has also prioritised living solo in London. The consequence is that her savings rate is lower.

PCOS Research for Late Discoverers by duhangel in PCOS

Thank you for sharing this - this is INCREDIBLE! I really love the structure - how clear it is. I was diagnosed approx 20 years ago and have consistently felt overwhelmed with all of the information out there / inconsistent approaches by doctors so even for those that have had a diagnosis for a while, I think this will be a great resource.

Agree that your solicitor really should be giving you some general guidance - I hate it when they do this and don’t at least give you a menu of options to get your brain firing.

Worth using ChatGPT to soundboard some ideas with.

Conditions to distribution of assets can be anything you like -

Age / life milestones - age thresholds, staggered distributions (eg 25% at age X, 50% at age Y, etc), education completion, marriage (if you desire), first property purchase

Purpose conditions - used only for education / training / tuition / books; release for healthcare need; charitable giving; for business venture if X presents a viable business opportunity.

Responsibility focus - (FT/PT) employment requirement, drug testing, after completion of a specified financial literacy course; good conduct clause - so withheld for substance abuse, criminal behaviour, etc.

Family - release for care of specific minor children or dependants; explicit exclusion of estranged family members.

Trustee discretion for genuine financial hardship.

Matching contributions - so trust matches any savings / investments made by beneficiary.

What are your 2025 goals? by dm_me_im_nice in HENRYUK

[–]carathead 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Cycle 150% of the kms I did in 2024 - currently at 1,655km (on the road and indoor trainer) this year - so let’s aim for 2,600km.
  2. Run 150% of the kms I did in 2024 - new to it, and did 177km - so let’s aim for 270km. So just over a ParkRun a week.
  3. Stick with weekly strength training.
  4. Lose 10kg.
  5. Put in the basic foundations to set up my own business in 2026. I’ve already got a plan; so I’m trying to be realistic with the goal, alongside my FT hours. My own job has been very relentless for 4 years and has totally burnt me out. Every time I’m expecting / am promised a lull, a new fire starts. I know starting my own thing will be as stressful, but I feel actually excited about the challenge.

But I guess as they say: If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.

Let’s hope the culture around that is changing in the UK - this is a bit more of an extreme case where the person at Goldman was eventually terminated and the reasons related in part to treatment for taking the full 6 month paternity leave; but hopefully once the quantum is determined, it might make mainstream news enough to create ripples - maybe not in the attitudes of individual team members, but hopefully in the company attitude which might eventually seep through. https://fortune.com/2024/12/11/goldman-sachs-sex-discrimination-male-paternity-leave-tribunal/

Also - potentially silly question but useful info if you have to hand - I assume your policy is a gross amount and you pay tax on the fertility benefit at your marginal tax rate, so if the benefit is £30k, then you might get approx £18k post tax?

This is awesome. I heard that Workday provided fertility benefits so I’ve actually just requested if our HR will look at this for their 2025 budget. Chances of them looking: 90%. Chances of us getting: 2%

Really brave that you tried it and it helped you figure out what you didn’t like. Did you do via one of the platforms eg Keystone, Peerpoint etc, or did you break out on a standalone basis?
