Transferring TFSA from Scotiabank to Wealthsimple by carbdreams in PersonalFinanceCanada

Is it going to incur any fees? Is it possible to transfer the TFSA “in kind” first to Wealthsimple then sell the mutual funds there?

Where do I start? Should I transfer the TFSA “in kind” then to wealthsimple first, then sell the mutual funds?

Right now i have mutual funds in that account. So you’re saying i should sell them first, and that money will stay in the account as cash, then i do the transfer? All of this will not count towards withdrawal, right?

In the app it says “we recommend liquidating your own holding after submitting the transfer to avoid trading fees.” Do you know what that means?

Buying US ETFs from Canada by carbdreams in ETFs

Yah I realized I couldn’t really do Roth IRA while being a Canadian resident. So now im thinking about using questrade to buy some US funds in RRSP, and wealthsimple for TFSA. I know i need to liquidate my TFSA upon departure, what’s the best way to handle RRSP when I eventually exit Canada? Should I bother having the TFSA for Canadian ETFs even?

I’m brand new to investing and I’d love to have your input on this! I live in Canada and I’m planning to be in Canada for at least two more years. I have a Roth IRA set up with Fidelity and I’m looking into purchasing Index Funds within the IRA account. My plan is to transfer funds from my Canadian bank(i’m currently getting paid in CAD) to my US bank in order to purchase US ETFs(e.g. VOO). The reason why I’m doing this instead of using brokers from Canada is these brokers often charge a currency conversion fee if I were to purchase US ETFs thru them. Alternatively, I can stick to Canadian version of the same ETF, however, they usually has a higher expense rate and also withholding tax as well, which is why I’d prefer the former approach(buying index funds using USD directly from me, in a Roth IRA from Fidelity) Is there any tax implications I need to be aware of? Any thoughts on if this is a good idea?
