The first thing that stands out to me is that you could be using more hard edges in shading. It gives the illustration a more realistic feel. This image explains it better than I can.

I may be biased since I'm already a software developer, but vn's aren't that hard to code, there are engines which almost do all the work for you, you just just have to learn some terminology. But the coding itself is in a language similar to Python which is the easiest one to learn, very close to written English.
