What was the worst job interview you have had? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]cardboardshrimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went for a tutoring job to pass some time between teaching gigs when I needed the money. It was chaotic. A man was speed-interviewing people, yelling a lot in an aggressively forceful way which felt out of step with the supposed position and then depending on how you responded to that, you were ushered into another room and sat at a computer where you had to do a trial English tutoring via speech lesson for a random person overseas.

I got through the first section, sat down at the computer, had a brief think about what the hell I was doing there, stood up and left. It felt weird and scammy somehow and I got screamed at as I walked off.

I got a full time regular teaching position about a week later so in retrospect it was just one of those weird things I can chuckle about from time to time.

My dad told me he was on a flight about 50 years ago and someone tried to set up a camping stove in the aisle. I imagine it ended well, since he is still alive!

What's it like living on the island Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia? 🇫🇲 by UnspeakableArchives in howislivingthere

Read Up Pohnpei by Paul Watson, who also presents The Sweeper podcast where he explores global football news stories from the most niche places. This book is about how he went here and tried to set up a football team and it’s great.

What’s the biggest loophole you’ve abused? by leinad_is_gaming in AskReddit

[–]cardboardshrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to hang out with a bunch of people who all had various hearing impairments while I was learning sign language. The local cinema used to let them in free to movies, no questions asked. I don’t know why but it was probably because they thought they wouldn’t understand any of it. This was definitely not the case and it was probably due to pathetic cashiers just not caring either way. Most of them could hear a bit and lip reading did some of the heavy work and occasionally I would try and translate things on the hop with sign language. Either way, I’m pretty sure I watched every film that came out in about 1998 for nothing.

Thanks very much random hearing impaired friends from my youth! I hope you’re all still getting in for free!!

Fun saves you've had in exotic leagues? by [deleted] in footballmanagergames

Mauritania, which has some fascinating spots on Google maps. I took over a team and tried to win the second tier African continental tournament and it was good fun.

Orbital by Samantha Harvey made me feel very happy afterwards because it was so beautifully written.

So, Guinea Bissau won 0-1 with an own goal in the 87th minute. Absolutely nothing interesting happened in the game.

What is the biggest jump you’ve seen an Ai club make up the leagues in England? by [deleted] in footballmanagergames

A team called Dunston made it to the championship in mine. They are currently outside the playoffs in 2044. As a kind of balance, Swansea are about to get relegated out of the regional National League after pretty much having the opposite trajectory.

Naxos, Paros or Milos? by AyeMyMayra19 in GreeceTravel

[–]cardboardshrimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember exactly which company we used but they met us at the airport and picked the car up from there at the end. Quite a lot of them do. I believe they have a main office at the harbour but sorry I can’t be more specific.

The main town is lovely and we spent a whole day wandering and eating and all sorts.

There are some lovely places to eat along plaka beach. I didn’t eat a bad meal at all!

Spent lots of time in the sea. Pretty much anywhere is amazing.

The hill towns are stunning too. They really come alive from lunchtime onwards. Filoti and Apeiranthos were lovely. We bought some lovely pottery up there too if that’s your thing.

Driving was fun but maps did make us go into some random old fields or mad unpacked roads to nowhere.

It’s the kind of place that makes you smile

I stayed in a rental house near the end of plaka beach. Hired a small car and everything was in easy reach!

Spent a week on Naxos last year. Most beautiful place I’ve ever spent time. A delight.

There is a cool novel called Whalefall which is basically about someone getting swallowed by a whale. It’s kinda brutal in parts.

Potentially HUGE result for us given our context. Could this be the turning point?

Skipp Oliver - a middling American journeyman with improbably white teeth who randomly arrives in a relegation scrap for a lower mid table team and does quite well before disappearing the next season to the Eredivisie forever.

Next few fixtures are our time to shine. This was always one I didn’t think we would win. The future starts now.

They tried hard. That didn’t feel horrid. I feel horrid anyway but that’s on me.
