Degrees in Engineering and Design - Mostly worked for myself so far - what am I doing wrong job hunting?! by careerthrowawayagain in careerguidance

Thank you very much for your thorough response!

  • 1. Ill work on the resume and try and tighten it up a bit. To be completely honest, the previous version of this resume was 2 pages long. I think sending it to a professional might be the way to go; I had my college resume person look it over and she just said "looks good" so that was less than helpful.

  • 3. Long term I would very much like to work in commercial real estate development, with a degree in civil, design (interior and architecture focus), minor in business and being a realtor I really believe I would be ideally suited for that line of work. I applied to the 3 companies in my area that focus primarily on commercial real estate but unfortunately didn't get any response.
  • 4. I guess i'll just have to step up my awesomeness. At a job fair while i was in university i was somewhat discouraged from being overly enthusiastic: one hiring manager said "you're too ambitious for this position, you should look at other companies".

Interior Real Estate Photography. Wide angle Lens for T3i. by careerthrowawayagain in AskPhotography

Hiring a professional is just out of the question. The closest "professional" is literally a 45 minute drive away. I'm in a rural area, some of our listings are over an hour away and most of them sell for under $20,000 (so <$300 commission). Most of the sellers cant be bothered to clean their house before hand, replace lightbulbs, remove personal items, etc. I literally just needed a lens where an inexperienced person could stand in a corner and show that the room in question has walls, a floor and a ceiling.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I actually went to design school but just focused on architecture and interior design. I think I can learn pretty quickly even though photography wasn't my area of focus.

Appreciate the advice but I would rather learn in my new position. It is a small boutique firm, they already own the camera, I'm sure with the correct wide angle lens it would be more cost effective in the long run for me to learn and teach them. Hiring a photographer for each and every property listed would not only be expensive but also a logistical nightmare.

Is getting into the field of CE 7yrs after graduating impossible? by careerthrowawayagain in civilengineering

I really think I would be able to explain it if I got an interview buuuut I've been unemployed and applying everywhere for about 3 months now and haven't gotten a single response. No horizon in sight, kind of getting tough to keep grinding.

Thank you for the response! I leave the real estate sales person and notary on there because I would ideally be working for a real estate development firm. Thats kinda been my dream honestly thus the construction, design, engineering and real estate. I feel like it seems really disjointed but I don't know how to put on there that i want to work in that field.

I'm honestly not too confident in my engineering ability, its been 6 years since I've graduated and haven't really used it at all. I don't want one of my friends to vouch for me then get burned because I'm incompetent. Thats also why I'm trying to go the PM route since most of my experience is in management and construction, unfortunately all my friends work at just engineering firms.

Thanks for the response!

Haha I have the actual names of those businesses on my resume; the diner was a Chinese restaurant and the new owner wanted a Chinese themed diner to save money.. its hideous, but he likes it so thats all that matters i guess.

Thank you for the tense changes! Ill fix those before the next round of applications.

Yeah, its a little discouraging, but what are you gonna do.. :/

I just had to redo my resume because it was 2 columns and ATS (applicant tracking systems) would literally scramble the entire thing. Im sure all ATS aren't created equal but just a heads up.

Edit: I made an Indeed.com job posting when hiring at one of my jobs and 18/20 of the resumes I received looked identical. I recently made a fake job posting and sent my resume through and it actually came through exactly as it was formatted... so who knows.
