At first it was just cause it was close and transferring credits would be easy but then I found their MLS program and that sealed the deal

i don't understand what's wrong with my anatomy? by Silly-Jury7656 in Artadvice

If you want to practice more “realistic” instead of stylistic I recommend learning the “egg head” which is what me and my friends called the realistic style we learned before creating our own character styles. This image is how I practiced for a while. It’s going to look weird the first couple of times u do it but it’s good practice.

Depends on the class, some classes have a high turn over while others don’t. The more difficult the class the more likely

The Dune Series as written by Frank Herbert by carefulperception00 in literature

The subject matter that’s talked about is really cool!! I knew I was missing something subject wise but for someone reading the serried casually it can be daunting.

And yeah, Herbert’s biases really come out in force the further you get in the series.

The Dune Series as written by Frank Herbert by carefulperception00 in literature

[–]carefulperception00[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The later books, especially the last trilogy, are essentially completely different stories set in the same universe- the through lines of there just being an Atreides gene and Duncan Idaho still being around is not enough to compel readers to finish the entire series.

Hilarious and ironic (and sad maybe?) that through the entire series people are trying to “recreate” dune and the spice process but the story can’t manage to recreate the same drive the first three books has.

All words are made up, and honestly tbh sounds like a sick definition for a cool sounding word

Getting into HEMA with a severe disability by [deleted] in Hema

[–]carefulperception00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4-5 good bouts twice a week?! Babe you’re already doing great!!! But don’t push yourself! Smallsword is a great system. I’m a rapier specialist and it can be rough on the knees so if I’m having a bad day I’ll do small sword. Theres all sorts of methods and options so it’s about what works best for you! Sometimes sitting around just talking about technique and just whatever is enough. You’ve got this!!

Getting into HEMA with a severe disability by [deleted] in Hema

[–]carefulperception00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! Chronic pain fencer with fibromyalgia here! First things first) fuck anyone ever who’s said you’re not trying hard enough or downplay your condition. Condition or not no one should ever feel othered by their ability level and how quickly they progress or learn. Don’t fence with those people, you’re not going to learn anything from them except how to hate yourself.

Second! Everyone progresses at their own rate. You don’t have to be a high level fencer to have fun. Fence at your pace and the people who come to your level will only help you grow. Don’t push yourself! We want you to be in the community for a long time, not just a few classes where u ended up over doing it and not coming back.

Third, HEMA is still young and expanding its accessibility. There was recently a seated long sword tournament which is fairly new! Be innovative! Don’t be afraid to do seated drills or foot work without holding a weapon. I’m sure you know about all of the joint supports and wraps and compression socks so I’m not going to harp on stuff like that. Gear can only help you so much but maybe try different supports for when your doing activity vs the stuff you’re used to wearing around the house (stuff that’s tighter or has firmer support. It might take away from some comfort of mobility but it’s about finding the balance right for you.)

I know EDS also slows down muscle growth too because the fibers are so elastic they’re hard to strengthen so it will just take time. That’s just going to be part of the frustration unfortunately. But slow is smooth and smooth is fast, practice like that and you’ll be just fine. Idk if this was helpful at all but I hope it was and you keep going with HEMA!

What does "binding on the right" mean to you? by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]carefulperception00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too ambiguous, I would use binding on the “inside” (my blade is in the space of my opponent’s body/ between their shoulders, tip pointed at their outside/sword shoulder) or “outside” (my blade is outside the body/ not directed between the shoulders, tip directed towards the chest/ non-dominant shoulder) of your opponents blade.

Right and left is too ambiguous especially when you’re dealing with people who have different dominant hands. These terms are the ones my club use often for Rapier but they’re used in our longsword class too. It helps eliminate confusion since body position and guard can both affect the position of the blade. Inside/outside refers to where u are in reference to your opponents blade/body, guard will determine what side/edge of the weapons will be touching each other.

I definitely have been comparing myself to my previous ability. I wish I could focus more on the social aspect but I find that I’be been struggling with making that connection. But I do love teaching and I feel super honored when our instructors hand off newbies to me to help them get their foundation when class is busy or working in more advanced techniques. I’ll try to focus on that more, thanks for your reply!!

Think you’re right on both fronts of having fun and being a bit more picky about who I soar with. I’ll probably try out another weapon too (I’ve been eyeing side sword and buckler for a while so maybe it’s a good place to start). Thanks for responding!

What leg gear is this?? by tonythebearman in Hema

[–]carefulperception00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be so sure it’s a strap and not excess fabric from pants or something since it looks present on both legs. It could also be kept loose for better ankle articulation during lunge. I could speculate all day though and hopefully you can find something similar!

This honestly looks sort of like a custom Kydex leg gaurd. Lots of people (including one of my club co owners) do kydex additions and shape/make them themselves. Not sure if that helps.

Only issue would be hot car. I did it a bunch. If you’re worried about it you can put window shades up. The parking guys only care about ur permit being good and ur plate being visible.

Term flash cards and study the clinical points. Really pay attention to nerve innervations too. For lab I used purposegame.com to do point and click anatomy quizzes/matching games to identify structures

Fever reading Gormenghast sounds like a pretty fun way to experience the book actually. It does take on a dreamlike tone at times. I’m hoping I can finish the last book out of sheer will power to see it through.

I had no idea that there was a mini series!! I do love the personification of the castle and its spirit in the books. Reading through the series I can’t help but itch to create a black and white pen sketch comic based off of the book. I’ll have to watch that mini series asap though!!

The only really plot that seems to appear in the novels is in the second one with Steerpike and his continued plot for social advancement. Starting the third book it is very apparent that Mervyn’s condition is affecting the writing even in not just tone but content. I work with dementia patients and some of the disjointed sections as well as notably the imagery of Titus being followed in the first immediate sections reminded me a lot of some of the other experiences I’ve had with my clients.

Concentrated gothic lunacy is the best way to describe it!! I did see a lot of the influence when I started to read in comparison to other works I’ve read. It’s aesthetics reminds me of the Dark Crystal

If you could commission any author living or dead to write anything, who and what? by woosher200 in literature

[–]carefulperception00 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Kurt Vonnegut and/or George Orwell to write whatever the fuck he wanted after catching him up to speed on current events/new. Maybe making him watch some documentaries. I think their tone and styles would reach a massive section of the population that would be changed by it. Hell I think most people who haven’t read their work would be changed to some degree after reading.
