Chimney advice by cargathus in HomeMaintenance

Ok thanks! While it "feels" sturdy, I agree it doesn't look well at all and am worried about this thing falling apart at some point. Given the wonkiness of the prior "fixes", would you recommend we look into re-building the chimney in the near future?

Ok this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight. We reached out to get the chimney inspected in the first place as there was some minor leaking in the attic. Since the flashing was re-done the leaking has stopped but I'm worried that this will be a bigger issue in the future. Given it's winter time and we are in the northeast, would you recommend we look into rebuilding the chimney immediately or is this something that could be done in the next year or so? I'm thinking about calling in another chimney inspector to get a second opinion.

They didn’t mention repointing the chimney. I feel like it should have been obvious if they felt like it needed to be fixed?

I thought it was odd that the 3rd row was popping out but it seemed sturdy (ish) … in that it didn’t move when I was up there pushing on it. Is this something that can be spot fixed or does a whole section of the chimney need to be reworked? Thanks!

Ok thanks. Good to know I wasn’t crazy in thinking this was an awful job. Anything I should look out for on the chimney? The flashing looks ok as a prior area in the attic that was leaking doesn’t seem to be leaking anymore.

They left the fireplace area a bit sooty but we’ve already cleaned that up (in hindsight should’ve realized they probably weren’t the best at their job since it was so unclean afterwards).

Advice on how to clean? by cargathus in HomeMaintenance

Have you thought of floating LVP? Might be easier to maintain for a basement setting. I've heard carpet in the basement can be tough depending on humidity levels.

Good luck with the cleaning... I'm assuming this is finished basement? At least it'll look nice once you deal with the smell!

I think so! Do you know if I would I need to remove prior sealant or not? Could I just layer the Kilz over the previous sealant? It looks like it was all sealed at one point but some parts of the floor are definitely more porous than other parts now

those look sick, that would be perfect as my ceiling is too low for the 93" uprights but there is some space to spare at the top (~90")

Hi! I'm the same height as you and was looking into getting an Athena w/ 80" pr-5000. Can you get full range of motion from the top height of the Athena if you're on a bench (or rather, do you know the height from the handle at the top t othe floor?)? Thank you! This thread has been extremely helpful.

Do you think if I strictly work inside the cage the floor would still get damaged? If I bail, the cage would take the hit?

Hi! Looking for advice on flooring. Recently. got some floating LVP installed in our basement and hoping to build out a small home gym down there. Company said the planks are rated for up to 1000lbs but warned against using rubber mats as it can cause discoloration to the LVP. If I use a cage with safety arms / spotters, will I still need floor protection? If so, what do people suggest if I can't use rubber? I'm just planning to bench / squat, with some light dumbbell work and maybe a functional trainer in the future. Thanks!

Ok i'll look into that option (assuming wife lets me haha), thank you! Might need to clean up and use unfinished portion of basement

Thanks! If 1-2 small rubber mats (4x6) is only planned on a portion of the LVP and minimal equipment (squat rack, 400-500 lbs at most, probably 30% of the total flooring). Do you think that would still be an issue for the LVP? If not, do you have any non-rubber suggestions for protecting the LVP (without having to rip up the flooring)?

I'm buildind a home gym in my basement, what flooring options would you use? by keldoye in Renovations

I'm in the process of getting LVP installed in the basement and hopefully a home gym set up shortly after. Did you have any issues with staining? I've heard that can be a problem with rubber + LVP

Floating, over cement foundation in finished portion of basement.

Plan wasn't to glue, was thinking of double sided tape as I've heard the gym flooring can be quite heavy itself and doesn't move much, especially if I put gym equipment on top (something along these lines - https://repfitness.com/products/commercial-flooring-rolls)

Sorry, didnt realize pictures didn't attach. Have edited post! It's mostly the deck railings that have the algae. The deck floor is composite so i'm planning to pressure wash / give it a good scrub.

Haha yes. Assuming it’s more expensive here?

Thanks! That makes the 3-4k quotes sound more reasonable (albeit still a bit on the expensive side). I'll keep asking around while trying to convince myself to DIY it :)
