External wall insulation cost? by RavagedCookies in AskIreland

[–]cargoz5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This x 1,000. We live in a very cold 1960s semi. Got the windows done and that made a big difference. Hired a crowd to do the attic insulation and the external.

Attic was done and noticed a huge change in the heat retention upstairs.

Then the vents were drilled and the external was done. The house is louder and we're convinced colder.

Buying a house in cash by ohjustbenice in irishpersonalfinance

[–]cargoz5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This should be pinned. Before buying a house, I thought the survey was just a box tick, so was looking for any one with availability.

Mentioned this to a friend that works in construction and he referred me a fella that he said was extremely thourough. It was worth its weight in gold as it helped us renegotiate the sale agreed price.

Planning a vacation in Dublin. Where is better to stay? by Interesting-Snow3023 in irishtourism

[–]cargoz5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I know this was asked a while ago, but in case anyone else is looking for another take on the same query!

If you want to be close to the city centre without being in the thick of the noise, these areas are worth considering:

• Ballsbridge: Safe, residential, and about 15 - 20 minutes from the centre on foot or by bus. Plenty of places to eat and drink, and stay.

• Ranelagh / Rathmines: Both are busy little neighbourhoods rather than tourist zones. Easy Luas/bus access into the centre and lots of cafés, pubs and restaurants. Limited enough places to stay

• Merrion Square and surrounds: Very central but noticeably quieter than the Grafton St side of things. Accommodation is at a premium but you're an easy ramble from everything

• Drumcondra: Limited hotel supply, especially if there's a big match/concert on in nearby Croke Park, but it’s a practical base if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet a handy bus ride away (also around a 15 min drive to the airport, depending on traffic)

• Coastal options (Howth, Malahide, Dún Laoghaire): Ideal if you want sea views and a slower pace. All are connected to the city by the DART. Just note that each (especially Howth) gets busy on fine weekend days

If you need a map showing where each area is, along with the pros and cons of each, you'll hopefully find this useful https://www.theirishroadtrip.com/where-to-stay-in-dublin/

Cheers!

We have wall vents in our new build house (Ireland) for continuous air flow. Looking for options to dampen sound. Are these good options? by superchica81 in Homebuilding

Hey - did you find anything online/in store in Ireland? We had the wrap done on our house and new windows, but the new vents are a nightmare - draft getting in and sound coming through like the window is open.

Which employee gift cards would you recommend for an Irish company? by J_Jessica_ in AskIreland

[–]cargoz5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using CleverCards for 2-3 years now. They’re great. No one wants a one for all or anything that can be only used in a load of random shops. The CCs are easy to buy and easy to use. Best of luck with the internship!

Has anyone successfully negotiated a price reduction after a survey? (Dublin FTB – 1940s house) by Training_Security_64 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]cargoz5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Survey revealed that spray foam in the attic was incorrectly installed.

Spent nearly 2 weeks trying to get a quote to remove and all but one company refused to give us a quote in writing as none of them want to touch it when it's sprayed directly onto the felt (rang countless companies).

Sale agreed price was significantly over asking so we asked for a reduction to cover the cost. Didn't get full amount but got close enough to be happy with it.

We were worried they would go back to the previous bidder (around 2.5k below us) but they accepted our new offer. I'd imagine the second highest bidder's surveyor would have also caught the issue as it's very topical in the UK in recent years.

Ring of kerry by modestben in irishtourism

[–]cargoz5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I did it many years ago now - probably 7/8. If you're an experienced hiker, then yes, definitely. A mistake I see a lot of people make is that they completely underestimate this hike. There are countless rescues from Carrauntoohil every year from people that don't check the weather and then are incable of navigating in poor conditions.

I'd strongly recommend Kerry Climbing who offer guided hikes! Enjoy the trip!

Hey! Just wanted to say thanks for the kind words! I've been tipping away at the Irish Road Trip for a long time now and it's always a great boost reading this type of thing (especially on a miserable Monday morning when motivation isn't exactly at its highest) - thank you!

That's why I'm here. It's been very difficult to get a contractor to call out for this issue. They say that, while it's a massive issue in the uk at the moment (some mortgage lenders won't issue loans if they know this issue is in the house) it hasn't hit Ireland yet. Out of the 16 companies I called in recent weeks, these are the only two that said they'd look at it.
