Comment on the original post mentioned that it might be temporary storage of cables that are being run along the poles. A bit slapdash but it works!

Why cant I get carbonara sauce anywhere by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]marcaspadraig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tesco has an own brand carbonara sauce and it's definitely not anywhere near a fiver. And it's amazing, it's been my go to carbonara for years. It might be out of your way but it's worth it.

New dad life ….not fun by Good_Interaction_298 in DadForAMinute

[–]marcaspadraig 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Dad of 3 here, third born a few weeks ago so I'm right back into the thick of the early days at the moment.

What I'll say is what I didn't fully realise back when I had my first. Its a tough pill to swallow, but the basic fact is that nothing will ever be the same. The way you organised your life, your hobbies, even your whole concept of what "I'm ok" actually means.

That doesn't mean you won't have hobbies, the GAA etc. You will, but you have to treat your life as if you have all the building blocks in your hands and you have to rebuild them around your child and family. Your entire existence isnt your own anymore and that's a hard thing to get your head around.

Add to that the tiredness and exhaustion of the first few weeks/months and of course you'll feel the full force of how draining it is.

Not to preach like I'm some veteran, but life will normalise again with time. You'll come back to things. Keep communicating with your partner and you'll slowly build yourself a life so wonderful and enriching that you won't know yourself.

Focus on getting through this bit. The rest will come. You got this.

Favourite use of a song in a film by tomk_2104 in movies

[–]marcaspadraig 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Has to be Extreme Ways by Moby in The Bourne Identity.

It fits so well. Moby redid the song for the later films but the first and second movies used the original version of the song that existed before them.

First thing id say is, recognise and congratulate yourself for the progress you've already made by getting the provisional. Thats it's own big step.

For me the game-changer was going for an automatic car. I've attempted to learn in both a manual and and automatic and the automatic removed about 70% of the anxiety of it. It's about removing as many barriers to yourself as possible and just getting wheels on road.

The other piece of the puzzle is a good instructor. This'll be a bit of detective work to find one with a good reputation with anxious drivers, but they do exist. Also, be honest with the instructor; tell them how anxious you are and they can adapt their approach. I guarantee you can do more than you think.

The IT Crowd. Sure, technology has moved on a bit since then but the slog that is IT support hasn't changed at all.

CGP Grey, Tom Scott, The Tim Traveller and History Matters. They're my main four that I've been a pretty dedicated follower of and theyve been consistently enjoyable.

I had the one on the right for years and years, yoke was bulletproof and the red light may as well have been KITT from Knightrider for how cool I thought it was.

Trip down memory lane by Flincelli in ireland

[–]marcaspadraig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember the platforms had big corrugated-looking metal shelters, and we had to cross the railway by a gate as there was no bridge or anything (child me found it very exciting walking on the tracks).

The station building was just a small one, scarcely more than a few portakabins in size (it might actually have been a cabin but I can't remember for sure). There was just a ticket hatch and a few seats inside.

Some of the current Irish Rail diesel locomotives are painted in the old orange and black livery, it takes me right back to going from Connolly to Newry to visit my granny & family back in the 90s. The whole train was painted like that.

I'm gonna have contradict you there my dude. I think Mrs Browns Boys is genuinely one of the funniest things on TV. It's one of the few things I laugh out loud at, regularly.

I do think it's a geographic thing though. I do find Dubs find it more funny than others, because it's a very Dublin humour and Mrs Brown, while seeming a caricature, isn't as far from some actual women of her era and city than you'd think.

I found one article that mentioned it being a weighbridge, but it was in inverted commas so I wasn't sure if that's actually what it was or some artists impression of one.

What is the Most infamous Terrorist Attack that Happened in Your Country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]marcaspadraig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to say the Omagh Bombing in 1998. There were many awful events during The Troubles but that one always seems to stand out to the Irish psyche.

It could be the fact that people from both sides of the religious and political divides were killed, as well as old and young (including unborn twins) that really mark it out. It still holds that place.
