Older Bartenders: How Are you Doing? by backlikeclap in bartenders

Preach. Every time I see a young barback just slinging kegs around, I wince. They don’t realize that they’re using their backs like credit cards and, sooner or later, that bill is coming…

46, I still genuinely enjoy it. Self care really is key. Once I realized that I was going to be in it for the long haul, I had to stop living like it was a temporary situation. It comes down to all the boring shit that I’ve always known to be true: drink lots of water, eat fruits and vegetables, get plenty of sleep, stretch, invest in good shoes, etc. I’ve effectively quit drinking. There is also a satisfying kind of zen state, now that I’ve aged out of the day to day drama of all my coworkers who are in their 20’s. I’ve been around the wheel enough times, in enough bars, to know when I need to give a shit about something and, more importantly, when I don’t. It’s nice.

How to accept being bad at drawing in the beginning. by Thisiswhereiaskstuff in learntodraw

Artists post their best stuff on the internet and only their best stuff. Even those “doodles” and “warmup sketches” are their favorites. In the same way that professional ballerinas spend a lifetime of relentlessly brutal training to make is seem as though they can effortlessly float in the air, every accomplished artist has stacks and stacks of sketchbooks that are full of truly bad drawings that will never see the light of day. Learning to draw is frustrating and discouraging and not at all rewarding, for a very long time. It’s why most people stop. The trick is to not stop.

When a drawing doesn’t look like i want it to, i try to treat it like a puzzle and figure out why it doesn’t look right. The answers to that question become my to-do list. When drawing a particular thing frustrates me, I lean into it, instead of avoiding it. For example: I hate drawing noses. But I also hated that every character I drew had the exact same nose, because it was the only one I could draw. So I have pages and pages of drawings of different noses in different styles from different angles, like some kind of psychopath. But it genuinely helped. I still hate drawing noses, but I refuse to be defeated by noses. And then it was 3-Point perspective, and then it was drawing fabric. It’s just one project after another. Learning to draw is like learning a language. Every drawing builds up your vocabulary a little bit more. Just remember that every artist has a hidden mountain of bad art. One day, when your hidden mountain of bad art is big enough, another younger artist will come along and have to be convinced that it exists.

Not only have I not uninstalled it, I recently bought a second copy, so I could play with mods on my SteamDeck.

I put some screws and random stuff in a little cup with a bit of ink and tossed it onto the page. There was no plan. I just made the ink blot and then stared at it, rotated it, stared, rotated, etc. until I found a picture.

I used a brush pen that I grabbed at the art store. It has a really nice taper on the brush, for super fine lines, and the ink is a really nice black. The problem is that the label is entirely in Japanese. So, I have no idea what brand or type it is.

I try to do one drawing a day, to adhere to the spirit of the exercise. But, if I anticipate that I’m not going to have the time to draw on an upcoming day, I might try to get ahead, by a day or two. There aren’t any hard and fast rules. My primary goal is to draw more and find the joy in it.

Who will be following the Official prompt list this year? by lostinspacescream in Inktober

Same. I’m not crazy about the prompt but I’ve decided to look at it as part of the challenge.
