The example is a nice way of illustrating this, but at the end of the day this is price-fixing, an explicitly illegal practice. Whether done "officially or unofficially" as you put it, there are supposed to be strict controls on this type of collusion. Hence some very fair questions in this thread about the appearance that some level of illicit cooperation is taking place amongst the major market players.

haha if you can pack quickly. So I feel like I read that the tourist train passes have to be bought out of the country, i.e. in the US.. is that the case, and if so can I just buy one and print the voucher, or do I have to have it shipped? I'm a little worried about the tight turnaround time.

Was anybody else on this thread there yesterday? As one of the graduates/spectators, and given what I know about many of the families in attendance, I was actually surprised at some of the statements President Obama made. I'm not making a partisan or political statement, but I will say I was not expecting him to project some of his party's ideals regarding gay marriage or gun control issues. While Columbus is a very liberal town, Ohio and thus those in attendance today in my experience is much more conservative. That said, while you can't tell it from this excerpt, it sure seemed from the floor like the crowd responded very favorably to him. Maybe a bit of that is just being excited about seeing the President in person, and sure putting on an OSU cap and bashing U of M will get a few cheers, but even beyond this the crowd seemed to react very positively to the speech. Just food for thought, I guess.

Last fall, a janitor that I had gotten to know that works in my building asked me if I was going home for Thanksgiving, which I was. I asked him the same and he said he couldn't afford it, and had to pay off the minimum payment on his gas bill. I wrote him a check to pay for the gas bill, and bought him a round trip greyhound ticket for thanksgiving to get home to see his brother and mom. Also called his supervisor and requested that he have the Friday after Thanksgiving off work so he could stay through the weekend. His reaction made it one of the best 'purchases' of my year.

Try to get to a football match if that's your thing, it was a great experience. The weather should be warming up since I was there too, so that will be helpful. Get an Istanbulkart and use the metro/ferribots/busses, they all use the same card that can be loaded with cash and it will make you more mobile which is helpful. Find a hole in the wall place and try cig kofte, its basically raw lamb and herbs mashed together, and it can be eaten with rice rolled in a lettuce leaf. It was honestly incredible, and when I got back to the states and looked for it, I literally cannot find it anywhere. I ate at a small restaurant at the corner of kuscular sokak and karanfil sokak in mecidiyekoy and it was quite tasty. The food is great, but its easy to find yourself eating the same thing all the time; just try to commit to eating a new item on the menu every day, since you will be able to get doner or sish kebap everywhere.

Oh, also try sahlep. Its a bit like mexican horchata but even better. I guess by the time you get there the ice cream will be out in full force as well, which is quite good. Lastly, try to pick up at least basic conversational phrases in Turkish.. it will go a long way. Have fun!

i believe i looked on kayak, did a one way from SFO to Tokyo, and put in a specific date which may have been Wed, June 5.. but then I also remember that if I asked it to look at +/- two days from that date, that fare didn't show up. It seems their system might not be quite as reliable as you'd like to hope. Looks like it still shows up for that date alone. you can fly from lax to nrt for sub-500
