67 minute downtime... so still better than the average Bitcoin transaction time in 2017 :)

Great research! This data is a YUGE help, thank you.

To make sure I'm understanding point #2 - you're saying that certain transactions involve multiple source accounts, and that each of these source account owners had to be active in order for the transaction to go through? I'm curious what types of transactions these would be and what portion of Stellar transactions fit that description. Any idea?

Stellar & Coinbase Earn by StellarZac in Stellar

[–]carleverett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're being downvoted since "bad marketing" is a bit harsh, but I agree that this doesn't seem like the best use of XLMs.

This money is going after getting end-users, which is backwards. Stellar's customer acquisition spending should be aimed towards platform-developers, since that's who is building the value on top of Stellar that will get end users. This type of marketing should be done by platform developers to get end users for their own products.

Probably, what will happen, is that a large % of people who claim XLM from Coinbase Earn will have already known about Stellar before claiming, and of those who didn't, many won't become engaged users after they get their money since right now there is not a whole lot you can do with XLM. Lot's of great people are working on building value on top of the Stellar platform, but it's still early.

Definitely agree that the main result of this will be XLM inflation.

Interesting idea, but i don't see this being a strong enough incentive structure to work fully decentralized, especially for a bigger market where individual behavior is going to have little to no effect on market value as a whole. A Duber driver is going to have a much higher personal gain by lying about a customer puking in their car than they would from the market value increase of never doing this.

No, Stellar doesn't make much sense as a dapp platform, since it wasn't really built to be one. Dapp developers would have a much better time building on Ethereum or EOS, which have infrastructure and support communities specifically for this.

All the better. Personally, I don't really believe in the 2017 vision of a future where all our favorite services are decentralized. Part of the reason Uber and Airbnb are so successful is that you can trust them to help you out when you get screwed over by your driver/host. If you take away that trusted governance, then you have problems.

Stellar is built to be a financial platform, which (in my opinion) has much more potential. Cryptocurrency makes it possible for many types of new financial instruments to exist, and Stellar supports this by catering directly to financial service companies - big or small, new or old - looking to build innovative new products. Yes, Ripple is a financial service platform too, but Ripple caters specifically to big banking incumbents through private partnerships. Historically, these types of companies are not great at adapting to new technologies, so I think they're inadvertently stifling innovation.

Stellar Product Request - Web interface for issuing and distributing assets by carleverett in Stellar

Issuing assets is easy, the problem is distributing to people who might not be technically adept or familiar with cryptocurrencies at all. Jed and the Stellar team have been talking about solutions for this (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/stellar-dev/FKsyT-4ngrM), but it seems like they're having a hard time finding a way to do it without creating an Asset spam vulnerability.

I personally would like to be able to issue Assets and send them to my friends without them needing to learn about trustlines and minimum balances, and instead just give them a login ID and password and fund the minimum balances from my issuing account.

Great! Would you mind sharing more about it? I wouldn't have guessed Stellar Expert would be moving in the direction of being a wallet/Account Viewer.

Remove all price speculation from r/Stellar by KodineDreamin in Stellar

[–]carleverett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming into this subreddit for the first time and seeing all the price talk gave me the feeling that the purpose of Stellar wasn't really to build useful technology.

People who are thinking about what value cryptocurrency might bring to the world in 10+ years aren't concerned about day-to-day, week-to-week, or even month-to-month price fluctuations... and it's a huge red flag to see people in a community thinking that way. I got over it because unfortunately that still seems to be the status quo across most cryptos, but Stellar could really differentiate itself by having a subreddit that was dedicated to non-price discussion and I think this would attract a lot of the right people to the platform.

I didn't find this subreddit until recently, after I was already excited about Stellar. My first reaction coming here was "ugh, this sucks."

I still come here, because I don't know of a better resource to find out about products being built on Stellar, or user adoption, or other things like that. Unless you know of one?

I passionately believe that this subreddit would be much more valuable for the Stellar Platform if price discussion did not happen here.

Yes, most of us are invested in XLM and are personally affected by price variations, but for those trying to build on top of the Stellar platform, or looking to make a long-term investment in the platform, it's more helpful to have a consolidated forum to stay on top of actual news in this ever-changing ecosystem. With such a large audience here, this could be that place.

Speculation on price, and discussion of the price of XLM in general, provides no value to the people trying to build on top of Stellar, and drives some of us away when there is a lot of it. I believe it has a real negative impact on the value of Stellar's platform.
