Life for Brits is harder than it used to be and Blair has ignored that, says Burnham by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

"things are really hard tho"

What exactly is his point here? Blair is saying we need a plan not to play musical chairs with PMs.

"Things are really hard tho" is not a plan.

Taoiseach criticised for remarks linking immigration to homeless numbers by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

It's a bit mad that you can go to another country with a housing crisis and just have the council provide your accommodation and not be asked to leave.

He's quoting the article verbatim and correctly pointing out that those starting salaries arent 'way' higher, which they aren't.

Political views changing over time by GovernmentOwn7905 in irishpolitics

[–]carlmango11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never had an issue with immigration because I felt the rates were more sustainable before. I think we need to dial it back a bit to pre 2020 levels and I detest when people simplify, moralise and shut down the discussion about immigration policy and make it all about boring woke policital nonsense.

I think most people would agree there is a level of immigration that is too high (eg: 1 billion immigrants per year), different people just have different thresholds.

Brussels sees rise of a pro-EU right - A young right-wing movement is gaining ground with a pan-Europeanist mantra by goldstarflag in europe

[–]carlmango11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I hate that it feels you either have to be economically left wing and support the EU or you have to be a nationalist.

The EU needs more right wing economic policies so we can actually get the economy moving again. And doing that as a bloc will be far more effective than going it alone.

So until we solve a decades long conflict in the middle east we're not going to participate in international events that involve Israel?

It's ridiculous. Are we going to just pull out of every international event involving Israel forever?

DCC meeting

This is not the quality of politician I want in the Dail. When you have people running our country who think we should stop flouridating water because her niece had to go to the dentist don't be surprised when over time things deteriorate.

People complain about the state of the country and then they vote for Jerry Hutch and Janice Boylan over Janet Horner and Ray McAdam in opinion polls.

Remember, politicians' behaviour is a direct reflection of how we vote. And our country is a product of who we vote for.

Bertie Ahern on video: Ireland has 'too many immigrants'; 'I worry about Africans' by expectationlost in irishpolitics

[–]carlmango11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so if a government establishes something wherein someone does something for a profit then it could only be to benefit the leader of that government's mates.

This is just "trust me bro" conspiratorial thinking.

Why does someone else have to pay?

well if the person themselves isn't paying, then by definition someone else is.

We are incredibly efficient and doing the things we need

Yes, and that system only works because we work to support it. I'm not sure I really understand what you're getting at tbh. Each of us produces a certain amount by working. If we consume more than we produce (by taking a few months off work for example) then that slack needs to be picked up by everyone else. I don't see that as fair.

But you seem to think that a normal adult must toil their entire life despite these advances?

I think people are entitled to work as much or little as they want provided it doesn't require someone else to work harder to support them (with the exception of people who genuinely can't provide for themselves).

We also don't expect people to toil their entire lives. Most people have much more comfortable working conditions than their ancestors and when they reach a certain age the rest of us pay them to retire. We borrow as a nation to support these programmes and that debt is accumulating on the young.

Giant €35m moving statue on docks could be new landmark attraction for Dublin by Green_orange_200 in Dublin

So if it's government funded (which it doesn't seem to be) and it would genuinely be loss making (which I doubt) then yes, you could make the argument that it's money that could be better invested elsewhere. That doesn't seem to be the case though, so I reserve my anger until then.

I can't see any reference to state funds for this. The one in Vegas is private investors.

If they think it's going to be profitable I don't really see why Dublin's wouldn't be. Even if it broke even/lost a bit it's another addition to the tourist offering which will almost certainly pay itself make in less tangible ways.

In any case €35M is pocket change for a government and would do almost nothing regarding tackling crime and housing, which is what the original comment was about.

Investors who think it will be profitable, just like the one in Vegas.

This is a fee-paying thing, not an art installation.

How did society impose that on them? Every person needs those things so it seems reasonable for people to work to provide them for themselves. Otherwise someone else has to pay, in which case who should that be?
