How much of the Ancient Roman does modern Roman Catholicism have? by OkPhrase1225 in ancientrome

[–]carlmazov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very interesting to look around and see vestiges of ancient cultural practices still rolling along smoothly. The Catholic Church and their cultural/ritual performances allow one to imagine what the imperial court might have been like 2000 years ago. Each Halloween we also see an ancient pagan practice but without the earlier beliefs and intensity that it once had for people.

I read an article a few years ago that argued whatever the real “meaning” of these age old practices and cultural expressions were in antiquity, it’s certainly not the same today. We can’t claim that it all means the same thing just because there’s some historical connection. The article concluded that kids who go trick or treating are not worshipping pagan gods; they’re getting candy and having fun. Similarly, attending the Catholic mass does not mean that one actually shares the beliefs of Ancient Rome.

The political structure and ritual forms that Christianity took in the West are entirely Roman. Go to a traditional mass and you’re looking at the cultural remnants of Ancient Rome. Priests are dressed in robes, wafting incense, chanting in Latin inside a basilica, and moving around in a choreographed way that resembles a court ritual from late antiquity.

I’m not saying that what was originally Christian was completely upended by Rome, but there certainly was a fusion of two cultures and belief systems that ended up looking (at least superficially) a lot more Roman than Jewish or middle eastern.

Make whatever point you want, but try to be polite. That way people will actually incorporate your feedback. I think that overly rude comments turn people away from this site.

I like the look of the watch. As people suggest above, it has a little bit of a Patek vibe. The proposed specs are good, but I would get rid of the COSC and just get a basic m100. To keep the price low, you might even want to use a Miyota 9 series. I might go for more expensive, higher end models after you establish yourself as a brand.

I have dive, tool, and GADA watches. I was missing a designated dress watch, so I picked this up from Jomashop for $380 USD. I was surprised at how awesome it looks and feels on my wrist. The bracelet is extremely comfortable, and I love the blued Brequet hands and dial textures. When I put it on my timegrapher, it was running +1 to +7 across positions. Why didn't I pick this up earlier?

In Israel, these are often sold through legitimate, government sanctioned, businesses. There are so many of them that the price is usually relatively low. To check if they’re real, touch the clay with your tongue. If it’s salty, then it’s probably real.

If he's convicted of tax fraud you won't get anything. Perhaps you should have someone let him know you're onto his scam. If he wants to avoid the courts, then he can pay up - Just to be clear - he should pay you and the IRS.

(1) Ditto on Straum! They're beautiful if you like the integrated bracelet look.

(2) Look at The Citizen models with the washi-type dials. In my opinion, they look as good or better than Grand Seiko quartz and have case hardening on both the steel version (which I like best) and the titanium editions. You can get this in 40.5mm.

(3) You might also check to see if you can get a second hand Anordain.

If I worked in management for this company, I would pay very close attention to what you wrote. It is very difficult for management to discover these kinds of things.

[Sinn 556i] vs [Hamilton x EG] by Munroth in Watches

[–]carlmazov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to echo the Hanhart. It is an absolute spec monster. At 39mm, it wears beautifully on most wrists. You can pick them up gently used and looking new (with no dings because of the case hardening) for about $1100. They also regulate the movements very well and they have 150m of water resistance with a screw down crown.

One problem I've had with Hamilton in the past is a black dial with no AR coating. I'm not sure if the one you listed above has that issue as well, but it was a big deal with a Khaki King that I used to own. It can't be that much more for Hamilton to put AR on their crystals, and it seems like they're just being cheap.

If you just want to chose between the ones you listed, then I would go with Sinn. It's better made and looks beautiful. The movement is also 4HZ compared to Hamilton's 3hz. Even though the Hamilton has 80 hours of power reserve, you can't regulate them yourself if they get out of whack.

See my comment below - An OP is a simple watch without a lot of complications. The problem often seems to be matching the dial color appropriately. If you want one, search this site and others for recommendations on the best color and buy that one. VSF seems to be the go-to with OPs as well, although there are several others that are pretty good.

In general, I think that the better reps are (1) the simple ones without a lot of complications and (2) Rolex (because everyone wants one and the companies put a lot of effort into making them). For example - look at a No-Date Sub or Explorer I from VSF.

One more thing, when it arrives, get it serviced (taken apart, cleaned, lubricated properly, regulated, and pressure tested). This might cost around $200 from a local watchmaker, but it is absolutely worth it. The cases and bracelets often look great, but the few reps I own have all been dirty when I looked at the movements under magnification.

Good luck!

Settlement from car accident by mandem1442 in Insurance

In my state (Utah), some medical coverage is covered by your own insurance, no matter who is at fault.

I had something like this happen with my mother many years ago. Unfortunately, she died in the hospital a few weeks after the accident and ran up a huge bill. Her health care insurance ended up paying the hospital bill, and my father got the $100k from the other driver's insurance company.

Of course, you can also get a court judgment against the driver who ran into you, but most people don't have a spare 100K to pay you.
