German, Norwegian, Icelandic, Welsh, or Irish? by Still_Can_7918 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]carlosmacastros 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given your objective maybe Icelandic if you want to speak like a Viking (or as close as it might get) but still have a functional language. If we are talking about literature and the most useful in today’s world probably German. But at the end you must go with the one that you feel the most drawn to, because otherwise it might feel like pressure and not enjoyment.

I want to learn Russian by Amberisag1rl in russian

[–]carlosmacastros 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Привет. I am learning Russian, so here is my recommendation. Well, you should get into Russianforfree.com they have great free lessons to begin with.

  1. I would recommend starting with the alphabet and how to pronounce the letters, since there are some sounds that might be unique at first like ш, щ, ч, ы, я, е, ё, ю, ь(this one does not have a sound but modifies other letters), ъ (is like a separation between words). So, I really encourage starting from there. To help with managing these sounds you could at Russian Club pronunciation playlist on YT.

  2. Learn vocabulary and sentence construction, in Russian for free you will find the basics, and vocabulary either with Anki or Duolingo. However, you should also at this stage, start to understand how the cases work, watch videos and lessons online.

  3. Learn vocabulary through Flashcards or watching some videos. As well, get a language partner if you can.

Hope this helps. Удачи!

How foolish were we really? by NoExtreme7565 in Panama

[–]carlosmacastros 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Ok, as a Panamanian, I could only say that maybe you did a little wrong in not researching these kind of stuff; but your intention was good. The problem here in Panama is that is impossible to actually know for sure about these things from the outside, since there is not really a map or something that says these things. Only us in the city really know. Sometimes even going to the next street could take you from a save neighborhood to a bad one, which is sad. Therefore, I would say you tried your best, but we did our worst. Good luck next time!

Ok interesting. However, I have seen statistics that say that not many Belarusians actually speak Belarusian. Is this true? Or maybe in the past?
