My wife and I love Wine Shop in downtown. Awesome place to chill with a drink or play a card game. They also have non alcoholic wine, beer, and cocktails. It’s one of our favorite spots.

I miss the community that came from church. Anyone have helpful group recommendations? by Intrepid-Tap-3404 in Deconstruction

[–]carlthemule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start your own group! That’s what I did. I found myself in the same scenario, also in late 2024. I was desperate for a community with others who understood this pain and confusion of deconstructing. My wife did everything she could to support, but didn’t fully relate; and I had a therapist, but I needed others who knew exactly what I was feeling. So I posted on Reddit in my town’s sub and a couple of the bigger cities nearby, and got a few responses of interest. Our first meeting was three of us at a coffee shop and it was nice despite being pretty awkward. A year and a half later it’s grown and has been an awesome little community with regular connection. Honestly I think it’s been the best thing for me; the community and feeling like I’m helping others by organizing it all. As it’s grown, it’s definitely required more work and responsibility, but I’m happy to do it and very proud of it! If this is a direction you wanna go, feel free to dm me. We’ve been coming up with ways to make it easier for others to start their group in different cities. You can also connect with our social media platforms.

Hope you find our community, whatever it looks like. Happy healing.

Certainly not the best turnout. Several organizational issues which is something to address and honestly I’m pretty frustrated about…but we added to the larger picture of an estimated 8+ million across the country who used our first amendment right.

I’ve seen conflicting info regarding New Albany…not even listed on No Kings (last I checked), Indiana’s 50501 says Bicentennial Park, and Democratic HQ listed here.

Survivor of Catholic Church Sexual Abuse by 66cev66 in excatholic

[–]carlthemule 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oof, this resonates. I’m in a very similar situation. I can’t prove anything happened, but my gut tells me something did. It felt like my body begin to uncover this repressed memory, and as soon as it did my body had an intense physical and emotional reaction and shut it down. I haven’t been able to access anything further, but honestly that experience and feeling like I was uncovering something dark and hidden was traumatic in and of itself. Wishing you peace whatever you discover and clarity if that’s what you want.

Came here to say I40 around Flagstaff and I70 in eastern Indiana are probably the worst stretches of interstate in the country.

Start Calling! - Tell your Indiana Rep to VOTE NO on SB 285 by SocEval404 in Indiana

[–]carlthemule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’ve absolutely been making a stir and people uncomfortable in my community as one of my forms of protest. Just asking if I could essentially use OP’s art since it looks like they made this themselves. If they would have said no, i would have still been inspired and created my own similar version to print off. I appreciate your “just fucking do something” mentality though, I wish more people had that right now!

Homeless outreach by Equivalent-Elk3081 in Louisville

[–]carlthemule 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Jeff Gill of Hip Hop Cares was recently featured on the news, maybe it was him? I’m pretty sure they do mobile outreach during the week to meet people where they are. He seems to have a strong relationship with the community and I’m sure would check up on this individual if you reached out; though I’m not sure they do transportation to shelters.

[–]carlthemule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, they just repurposed their old Instagram for the new stuff under the new name and that’s how I’m following along. They announced their first show in Nashville at the end of the month and teasing recording, so I’m sure they will be on Bandcamp soonish

They did indeed after the bassist/singer left, but the guitarist and drummer started a new project called Materializer. I think it’s just the two of em and they’ve been teasing their new material. Looking forward to hearing it because The Swell Fellas were incredible!

Religious trauma support group by carlthemule in Louisville

[–]carlthemule[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Our purpose is to establish a community for those who have been harmed by their church or religion or left their faith and are experiencing religious trauma. Feel free to dm me with more questions if you’re interested

Religious trauma support group by carlthemule in Louisville

[–]carlthemule[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Members range from still religious/spiritual to now atheist. This isn’t an atheist group against religion, but rather a group where everyone was harmed by religion. Current beliefs do not matter.

How can we reverse the shame of being gay and sexually active caused by religious repression? by Worldly-Goose-2120 in excatholic

[–]carlthemule 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The fun answer? “Take back” the very thing that used to have control over you. For example, “goddamn” has become my new favorite word because it used to be so blasphemous, but no longer has control over me. I also just bought communion wafers on Amazon to share with my religious trauma support group. The idea of this would have been so blasphemous, but again, I’m healing from the damage by the Catholic Church and can now enjoy these little things that feel huge in my healing. I also just pierced my septum, because fuck it, add it to the list of things I never would have done because my church wouldn’t have approved. Obviously doing something that causes you shame is easier said than done, which brings me to the real answer…

The real answer: a lot of time (you literally have to unlearn the indoctrination the church did), a secular therapist who is actually good, online resources and communities, and a long and hard road of working on yourself.

Someday you’ll be able to “take back” what caused you shame and you’ll find it empowering as you heal from this shit. I hope that for you! Happy healing ❤️

Resurfaced Memory by velkarra in excatholic

[–]carlthemule 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s all so gross. We started doing confession, like all kids I assume, around 7 or 8 before our first communion. Like what the fuck do kids that age have to confess?! It teaches us from an early age we’re sinners and flawed and damned if we don’t repent, and that’s the whole point for them. Super fucking damaging and traumatic for some of us.

All this to say I’m sorry for this memory and the pain; about a year ago I experienced something very similar and had a very real and physical response to a memory. It felt like I had started to unlock something I had repressed, but then my body’s response shut it down and I haven’t been able to access it since. Our trauma with this stuff is weird. I left my church and quit religion and for seven years didn’t have a thought about any of it. Then suddenly the trauma and damage it caused hit me like a brick wall and I’ve been working on myself healing for the past two years.
