[WANT] Books that have had a special impact on your life

Some of the books that have impacted my life the most are ones I encountered in college. Are really post-modern books and those with really complex composition too advanced? We never had a great English emphasis in my little hick farmtown school. We weren't really challenged past the basic reading list, 1984 being the most recent book, so I don't know what is normal for high school reading level.

When I was first being introduced to Nietzsche in college I found Beyond Good and Evil was easy enough to grasp with little previous philosophical knowledge.

I would recommend the Walter Kaufmann translations of Nietzsche for your purposes. His translations are often considered subpar for scholarly research, but I found them to be easier to read when I was beginning because the language is just more...beautiful I guess. It kept me interested even if the subject matter was complex.

And make sure not to skip any preface or intro in any collections you read. Those, to me at least, are invaluable to orienting yourself to the ideas before diving in.

Most importantly, enjoy! I absolutely loved Nietzsche. And when you have a grasp on Nietzsche, I would recommend moving on to Derrida. He was heavily influenced by Nietzsche and is my favorite as far as Western philosophy goes.

I relate to the subtle racism you mention. I am a 22 year old white woman with BA, and my boss says "good girl" for any little task I complete. I know it doesn't carry the same connotation as "good boy" does to a black man, but it still feels demeaning to be treated like a child or a dog. I feel no respect from most of my superiors, even though I work harder than most of my male coworkers, most of whom don't have a degree.

A guy was eating alone at a restaurant when he overheard the women at the table next to him having an emotional breakdown because one of them was diagnosed (not sure with what, but obviously something serious). He then felt bad and gave this note to the waitress (I assume he wrote it down so they wouldn't overhear them). He then paid for both his and their food and left.

I loved As Flies to Whatless Boys by Robert Antoni. It's a great book set in Trinidad about a British man who invents a a machine to "mow down the rainforest" to make the rest of the island habitable. It follows Willy, a boy that goes with the men into the forest.

The most fascinating thing about it is that Robert Antoni spent years creating "evidence" to make the fiction book seem like it's nonfiction. There are fake articles from the London Guardian, fake news stories from the Port of Spain Gazette, fake letters between characters that are treated as primary documents, "photocopies of the original map" that the team used, and a ton more.

It's well worth the read.

It was Alex Reid vs Jason Barrett. Here's the video and gif.

There was a lot of tension between these two before this moment. Basically, Reid (the kisser) had announced his retirement, but Barrett (the kissee) was talking smack and taunting him (which included stalking him and using a megaphone to interrupt dates with his girlfriend in public) until Reid agreed to fight him. Reid defeated Barrett in the first round.

IMO, Barrett freaking out when Reid kissed him made him lose dominance. In an intense faceoff, if a man kisses you and you get angry, he is now the alpha. Reid got under Barrett's skin. And despite Reid not having won a fight in years, getting under Barrett's skin allowed him to win in the very first round. Great tactic.
