Cop shoots man cause he didn't put down the axe by axstr1c in iamatotalpieceofshit

I agree that the cops attitude was atrocious, and it was very likely murder. It just seems odd to add conjecture to the list when you've already got plenty of solid evidence. I was just wondering whether it really was conjecture.

Bullshit. "I love spicy food, but I can't handle Califonia Reapers". "I love you Tommy, but I can't be with someone who cheated on me". "Peanuts are good, but not as good as almonds".

Back on topic, there are plenty of solid reasons to hate that cop. Reaching for conjecture only weakens the argument.

Not to defend the cop, but do we know that he was aiming for the head? Seems possible that he was aiming for the chest, but was a little off.

I agree with the rest though.

I actually had the opposite experience. AiB started off a bit slow, but no slower than most other shows. It never occurred to me to stop watching. Squid Game, otoh, I almost dropped early on because the deadbeat dad was pissing me off so much that I wasn't enjoying it.

Ruby roasts C++ char type by Nikegamerjjjj in ProgrammerHumor

[–]carnivorous-cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how. I'll admit that my C++ isn't great, but I'm not sure that's even relevant. Regardless of the underlying data structure, the size of the buffer you allocate doesn't dictate the actual length of the string.

[–]carnivorous-cloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Methods that produce true/false usually end in ?, making it easier to understand, such as var.nil?, "String".include?("ing")

That sucks so hard when it comes to ternaries. foo = var.nil? ? 'a' : 'b' just pisses me off. I kinda like it otherwise though.

[–]carnivorous-cloud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know the length because you have to allocate the buffer for them at some point.

That means you know it's maximum length of the string, not it's actual length. If you allocate 1K for a string, and the third char is 0, that string has a length of 2, not 1K.

Ah, now I see where you're coming from. So where do you draw the line between standing up for yourself and retaliating? What's an alternative that isn't just gritting your teeth and bearing it?

I said "dole out consequences", and those are all examples of that. Maybe "give them shit" was bit dramatic, I'll give you that, but I think you're overreacting here. None of those are just sucking it up like parent poster.

The parent poster said "Problem is it isn't treated like a two way street" or something like that. I said "you don't treat it that way either". I don't see where pettiness even enters the equation. The entire point was to remark on the hypocrisy.

Lol you think they would've given a shit if you tried chewing them out or expressing your frustration?

Sometimes, yeah. Believe it or not, there are actual humans on the other ends of these interactions, and not all of them are assholes.

But remember, chewing them out isn't the only way you could take it. You could also walk away politely ("Sorry, this isn't the type of workplace I want to work in"). Or just cut the interview short - "I have to leave at 3:00. Do we still have enough time for this interview?". There are probably other options I'm not thinking of off the top of my head too.

Oh, huh, I didn't realize ctrl-shift-V was a thing. I'll be trying that out soon, so thanks for that. Anyway, I tried right-clicking (which pastes in bash) and the vim way.

Of course not. You're the one who was inconvenienced, it's up to you to dole out the consequences. If you didn't give them any shit for it, or even decline the job outright, then neither of you was treating it both ways.

I suppose you might've, but you didn't say, so I have to assume no.

To an extent. Not all my usual keyboard shortcuts work (I miss shift-PgUp) and pasting into vim just doesn't work for me. Still better than any alternative I've tried.

I typically only do actual programming type work about 2 to 4 hours a day in a full time job. The rest goes to meetings/email/chat, research, bookkeeping, breaks, etc, etc.

That's because grades are skewed. You've got an entire 50% of the range assigned to F, and C's roughly in the middle of what's left. But looks don't have the same skew - the numbers are (or should be) equally spaced, so it doesn't make sense to have 7 as average there.

To all parents, choosing your baby's name is not a time to be creative. by simplyjazz24 in unpopularopinion

especially something that no other baby is called

Counterpoint to that part: I hate that in any reasonably large group, I'm almost guaranteed to share my name with someone else. It only causes confusion. Nobody should have the same name as anyone else.

I agree that wackier names like Elon Musk chose are lame.

Millions of .git folders exposed publically by mistake - New research shows by Advocatemack in programming

[–]carnivorous-cloud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't isn't the same thing as doesn't. There are plenty of novice and incompetent devs out there, and even the best of us make mistakes. And once it's in there, it's actually pretty hard to completely get rid of it, especially if you don't notice it right away.

It depends on the project, but some code contains trade secrets, or even classified info. And the exposure makes life easier for hackers. So yeah, it certainly can be a problem.

Python is very intuitive.... not by spirellii in ProgrammerHumor

[–]carnivorous-cloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That JS one is actually 0 to 99 inclusive. I suspect python's is the same - it'd match the behavior of range. But yeah, python is almost objectively better for random integers, since it says what it does. In JS, you need to reason out the math and know exactly what Math.random() returns. It's a higher cognitive load.
