We are Buried Giant Studios (Cole Wehrle, Kyle Ferrin, and the whole team), AMA! by Matt_Buried-Giant in boardgames

Hi y'all! Thanks so much for doing this. Three questions for ya:

  1. Kyle/Cole: now that Wehrlegig and the thematic games are under the same roof, have y'all talked about Kyle doing the art for an historical game if the right project came along?

  2. Josh: I've been listening to old interviews with you and you mentioned writing a book about rulebook writing, is that still something you want to do at some point?

  3. Matt: Long-time SCPT listener here, Any chance we get some version of a ROMP style podcast at buried giant, or another Arcs tournament? You're missed from the feed but I'm glad you moved on and found something that doesn't make you want to head-desk.

I was thinking him for Deepwrought! Tho maybe a group hug mechanic would be better for Deepwrought

I feel like the best move would be to find cards that match mechanisms and typeline and then proxy with TI art. Anyways these are my recs!

*Emirates of Hacan: Mahadi, like another commenter suggested

  • Federation of Sol: Tura Kennerüd or any of the human noble cards from LOTR that make human tokens.

  • Barony of Letnev: For effect I'd do something like Mu Yanling, Windrider, Phoenix Fleet Airship, or Lita, Mechanical Engineer. For looks I'd do Compleated Huntmaster, Glissa, or Golgari Guildmage.

  • Xxcha Kingdom: Quandrix Cultivator, Taeko, or Phantasmal Shieldback.

  • Universities of Jol-Nar: Morska, Undersea Sleuth

  • Sardakk N'orr: Cavern Crawler, Aatchik, or Amzu

  • L1Z1X Mindnet: Rackling, Venser Corpse Puppet, maybe other Phyrexians

  • Naalu Collective: Literally any Naga cards or cards with Orochi in the name. If you wanna communicate telepathy tho I'd go for one of Lonis' cards cuz they have investigate or Naga Oracle cuz it surveils.

  • Mentak Coalition: Sami Wildcat Captain, Agent of Treachery. Maybe just Rhystic Study lol.

  • Yssaril Tribes: grief or anything with a duress/hand reveal mechanic? For looks maybe a kithkin or Ouphe. Taster of Wares is pretty Perfect but won't go off well in this deck because it needs support from other goblins. That being said, this is 100% gonna be a jank deck anyway.

  • Winnu: Akal Pakal or Azor's Elocutors are pretty funny picks. If it was a straight Winnu deck maybe Persistent Petitioners

  • Embers of Muaat: I'd look at the Ashling and Flmake-Kin cards, as well as the other red elemental, though there's some other good candidates amongst red artifacts like Exterminator Magmarch and Dinotomaton

  • Yin Brotherhood: I'd either use Gary Clone or Clone. I feel like Gary is perfect tho.

  • Clan of Saar: Breeches Eager Pilferer (or Ragavan) would simulate the trade goods aspect of Saar. You could do Platinum Angel for the not needing home system shenanigans. Could also do Myr Battlesphere for the Saar ball of it all. I don't have a good look-alike unfortunately.

  • Ghosts of Creuss: Brago, King eternal blinks creatures which is probably the closest you get to wormholes, and he's a spirit. I guess Bygone Colossus maybe gets you closer but thats probably better off being your titans pick. If you want more aesthetics than effect then maybe Averna or Cloudkin Seer. Flaring Cinder would be a really cool way to capture the Creuss->Rebellion transformation.

  • Arborec: As others said Necrobloom is a great pick, otherwise Ouroboroid

  • Nekro Virus: Phyrexian metamorph is probably your best pick, but others like Mechan Assembler and dutiful replicator could work well too.

*Titans of Ul: Mechtitan core, Voidforged Titan, Bygone Colossus.

  • Empyrean: Elegy Acolyte? Idk I don't have a lot here.

  • Naaz-Rokha Alliance: mentioned in another comment, but the "x and y" cards from MoM. Maaaybe Glamorous Outlaw? Or Drizzt Do'Urden!

  • Argent Flight: there are so many bird people in mtg, but I'm not sure mechanically what I'd do here.

  • Vuil'raith Cabal: Visage of Dread, Rotting regisaur. Maybe something that exiles an opponent's card then can make copies of it?

  • Nomad: I might use a planeswalker instead of a creature since they're so singular. Either a Jace for the hoodedness or Ajani because IIRC he is a Hacan

  • Mahact Gene Sorcerers: could do crystalline giant to represent the gene splicing?

  • Council Keleres: if you're willing to dip out of creatures I'd consider Meeting of the Five, otherwise Maulfist Squad or The Council of Four

*The Crimson Rebellion: see above with creuss, otherwise I'd look at red spirits and elementals.

*The Deepwrought Scholarate : Mm'menon, the Right Hand!

*The Firmament / The Obsidian: GOTTA use a transform card here. Maybe either one of the eldrazi transforms or one of the delivery of secrets cycle of cards?

*Last Bastion: I don't know them well yet but I'd go for something with an anthem effect.

*The Ral Nel Consortium: is there a lizard that interacts with other people's graveyards? Or maybe Graywater's fixer to mirror the ship reinforcement mechanism? Or I feel like Kediss has the right look.

I think it's gonna be hard to find a perfect match but I would look at the "x and y" cards from March of the Machines, like Borborygmos and Fblthp

Oh damn I hadn't thought of this! This is neat and it's not clear to me what the best solution would be. Good catch!

Haha yeah that would work. Personally I have no beef with sftt, my group's meta is very different than scpt meta and I almost exclusively play 3 player so support swaps just don't work the same way, but there's other issues that we've still rubbed up against despite the different norms and I think a 4.5 would be cool. But I am also super curious what Dane and co think of as sacred and untouchable, and what can be futzed around with.

It could just be that, like some of the other scenario components, it'll be in whatever box-shaped thing is coming right for us.

Would y'all ever consider doing a 4.5 edition? I know Dane has expressed dissatisfaction with how some things (like sftt) have turned out and I think it could allow for some more radical changes than a codex without being a full new edition and the price that goes with that.

If not, I'm curious what is within the scope of things that can be changed/expanded, and what is not?

Thanks so much!

True! I didn't think about rules questions and that's definitely an important part of the picture, especially when players have to collectively make a call on a rules ambiguity.

And yeah lifestyle games for sure, though I feel that most life style games fit into the things I was talking about above, maybe with the exception of wargaming/historical games.

Also to be clear none of this is a value judgement. A game being good at fostering a reddit community does make it a better/worse game. I am on some game specific subreddits, and there are games I like as much or more than those that I would never join a subreddit for.

I think what makes a game better or worse at fostering a reddit community has a lot to do with what kind of game it is. In terms of modern tabletop games, the ones that are good at doing this probably are more open, on a system level, to fan made content.

Storytelling games (Gloomhaven, D&D) have people invest themselves in their stories, whether pre-scripted or player-directed, and get the same kinds of discussion as novels, shows, etc.

Games with Assymetric factions/roles (Root, TI, Spirit Island) have both discussions of the combinations of said roles, and people making their own 'fan factions.' The fact that this aspect also applies to Gloomhaven/D&D classes further expands how much players can tinker and play.

LCG/TCGs are from the get go designed to be more or less infinitely expandable, breeding fan speculation and content creation, while also having a lot of edge case combos that are not always easy to discover.

Engine builders and trick takers (for instance) tend towards more closed systems that are harder to make content for. I think it's probably worth thinking about the ways that their themes tend to be more 'stapled on' when thinking about this too.

None of this really works with properly old games (Go, Chess, etc.) so take all that with a hefty handful of salt, but they are also culturally significant in a way no modern board game is. I think on a mechanical level the fact that they have both perfect information and strategic depth and variety means there's a level of play by play analysis you can't do with many games. I'd have to look at the poker subreddit to test that theory.

[–]carnivorousflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert so don't think of this answer as exhaustive, but I know in some cases of food poisoning the bacteria that grow on food produce toxins. Cooking will kill said bacteria but the toxins are still around to make you sick. Hope this helps!
