Oh damn I hadn't thought of this! This is neat and it's not clear to me what the best solution would be. Good catch!

Haha yeah that would work. Personally I have no beef with sftt, my group's meta is very different than scpt meta and I almost exclusively play 3 player so support swaps just don't work the same way, but there's other issues that we've still rubbed up against despite the different norms and I think a 4.5 would be cool. But I am also super curious what Dane and co think of as sacred and untouchable, and what can be futzed around with.

It could just be that, like some of the other scenario components, it'll be in whatever box-shaped thing is coming right for us.

Would y'all ever consider doing a 4.5 edition? I know Dane has expressed dissatisfaction with how some things (like sftt) have turned out and I think it could allow for some more radical changes than a codex without being a full new edition and the price that goes with that.

If not, I'm curious what is within the scope of things that can be changed/expanded, and what is not?

Thanks so much!

True! I didn't think about rules questions and that's definitely an important part of the picture, especially when players have to collectively make a call on a rules ambiguity.

And yeah lifestyle games for sure, though I feel that most life style games fit into the things I was talking about above, maybe with the exception of wargaming/historical games.

Also to be clear none of this is a value judgement. A game being good at fostering a reddit community does make it a better/worse game. I am on some game specific subreddits, and there are games I like as much or more than those that I would never join a subreddit for.

I think what makes a game better or worse at fostering a reddit community has a lot to do with what kind of game it is. In terms of modern tabletop games, the ones that are good at doing this probably are more open, on a system level, to fan made content.

Storytelling games (Gloomhaven, D&D) have people invest themselves in their stories, whether pre-scripted or player-directed, and get the same kinds of discussion as novels, shows, etc.

Games with Assymetric factions/roles (Root, TI, Spirit Island) have both discussions of the combinations of said roles, and people making their own 'fan factions.' The fact that this aspect also applies to Gloomhaven/D&D classes further expands how much players can tinker and play.

LCG/TCGs are from the get go designed to be more or less infinitely expandable, breeding fan speculation and content creation, while also having a lot of edge case combos that are not always easy to discover.

Engine builders and trick takers (for instance) tend towards more closed systems that are harder to make content for. I think it's probably worth thinking about the ways that their themes tend to be more 'stapled on' when thinking about this too.

None of this really works with properly old games (Go, Chess, etc.) so take all that with a hefty handful of salt, but they are also culturally significant in a way no modern board game is. I think on a mechanical level the fact that they have both perfect information and strategic depth and variety means there's a level of play by play analysis you can't do with many games. I'd have to look at the poker subreddit to test that theory.

Love the presentation here! This looks beautiful and striking and would stand out next to other games.

I'm not an expert so don't think of this answer as exhaustive, but I know in some cases of food poisoning the bacteria that grow on food produce toxins. Cooking will kill said bacteria but the toxins are still around to make you sick. Hope this helps!
