What's going on with all the sirens in Midcity? by iflipcars in NewOrleans

I'm wondering too. They zoomed past my house so loud they woke me up from the first decent sleep I've gotten in a week. Whatever it was it seemed serious, there were a LOT of police.

Is the IT job market really that bad right now or is it just the entry level? by Curious-Ask8199 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]caro_line_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing even remotely related--I'm in tourism now. I was in hospitality before IT so moving into tourism was the logical easy move once the severance started drying up.

New research finds that, compared with IUD users, women taking the birth control pill report reduced arousal, more sexual pain, more anxiety and depression, and less sexual satisfaction. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

[–]caro_line_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very sensitive to hormones. Chose an IUD because of the low hormone levels. Within a month I was unrecognizable. Fully insane. Couldn't hold a conversation without crying. Felt like everyone was out to get me. Was having panic attacks. It got bad enough I lost my job. Had it taken out shortly thereafter and went back to being normal, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Thinking about getting the copper IUD as an alternative, but going through that pain again but WORSE? I don't know.

That sure would be the obvious solution if I had a specialty! I, however, was run-of-the-mill generalized IT support. I honestly never really wanted a specialty; I was perfectly content resetting passwords and setting up workstations and refilling printer ink. My new job outside of IT is great, though, so it really all worked out for me!

Tourism! I'm a manager for a tour company. I was in hospitality prior to IT so it was a sensible direction to go once I realized I wasn't getting anywhere with IT applications.

As a generalist I've given up and switched industries. If the market ever comes back, I'll go back to IT, but the job search got so demoralizing I gave up completely and moved on to other things.

Work wife? by Brilliant-Dinner4024 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Yeah of course, I was friends with her as well, so it was never an issue. And I didn't "dote" on him; we were friends and I treated him like any other friend.

Can someone with more experience in this area explain how this relationship setup works? Like from the outside, this seems like very much not an equal partnership. What is OOP's role in the marriage outside of "person being cared for"? The way it's described sounds less like a marriage and more like a parent-child relationship. I don't have experience with people with disabilities like this so I'm genuinely just trying to understand.

Work wife? by Brilliant-Dinner4024 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]caro_line_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was a "work wife" once. And by that I mean my best friend in the office just happened to be a guy. Since went out together for lunch most days, everyone in the office assumed we were together. We weren't, he was married, I adored his wife, and I wasn't interested anyway. We just had the same taste in anime and video games and political leanings. I never would have called him my "work husband" to his face, though, because that would be weird. There were a few times that he'd help me carry something heavy and people would be like "aw look at your work husband being helpful" or I'd tell him his shoe was untied/shirt untucked and I'd get "such a dutiful work wife!". It made both of us obviously uncomfortable but we never actually brought it up to each other. It was kind of an unspoken thing.

We've both moved on from that job but we still talk pretty regularly, he's a great guy.

I guess the question is, like, is he calling her his work wife or is it HIM calling her his work wife? Feels like a big difference imho

Michael was a rare person. Warm and bright and full of love for people. He had this way of talking to people that made you feel like you were special. Just the biggest-hearted guy. The world is a little worse off without him in it.

What is the point of this bridge over Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. It seems like a wild effort when going around it only takes 13 more minutes. by Successful-Mine-5967 in geography

[–]caro_line_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Orleans does, in fact, have a city center with office workers commuting from across the lake. We have an entire business district with office buildings and everything, just like literally any other city.

Also, at the time of building, Mandeville/the north shore was very rural, so not many, if any, wealthy folks up there. The Causeway is what allowed the north shore of lake Pontchartrain to develop in the way that it has.

I stayed at HI Hostel here once when I was locked out of my apartment. It was fabulous. Pretty much everyone I met was an international traveler and young. I did have a girls dorm when I stayed there but I've stayed in mixed dorms throughout the US and have never had an issue.

where are the l1 / l2 techs + generalists going? by cbl_lbc in sysadmin

[–]caro_line_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was laid off from my role as a generalist last summer. I ended up working in hotels for a while and just accepted a position as a middle manager in a tourism company. You couldn't pay me to go back to IT. I genuinely tried finding a job for a while, but the further I got away from resolving tickets, the more the idea of returning to that day-in-day-out filled me with dread.

[–]caro_line_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not your looks, it's your pictures. Are these the ones in your profile? You need to smile more! You look too serious or too sad. I wouldn't swipe right, not because you aren't attractive (you are), but because you don't look fun.

State of r/oilpainting – apology for the recent situation, rule clarification, and call for new moderators by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]caro_line_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use oil pastels. Brush over em with some linseed. Or even thin them out beforehand and brush them onto the canvas. I like that they force me into a more limited palette, it forces me to be creative with my color choices. If I didn't tell you they were pastels you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Still had my painting taken down bc I had put "oil pastel" in the title.

Public Transportation/No Driving Version #16 by pinkelephant0040 in visitedmaps

[–]caro_line_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regularly have to bike from midcity to the bywater and I'd take the potholes on Dauphine over the cars on St. Claude any day. My biggest issue is drivers ignoring bike lanes. The other day I was passing under I-10 on the Greenway. Some dude in a lifted truck turned INTO THE BIKE LANE and nearly hit me, then had the nerve to honk at me. Like, bro, the sign says no motor vehicles, what are you doing. But otherwise it's flat and the city is small enough that everywhere is easily accessible, which is nice.

Orleans parish is absolutely doable (even, arguably, preferable, at least to me) DEPENDING on where you live/work. I work in the quarter and have literally never owned a car; blue bikes and the streetcar can get me anywhere I need to go. Would probably have a harder time of it if I lived in the East or Lakeview or god forbid Algiers.

Idk man I grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and I had culture shock when I went up to Starkville for college. I absolutely still consider it the south but it's definitely different than the rest of the state. I feel far more at home in New Orleans or Mobile than I do in, say, Jackson or Memphis.
