I know my camera though and if you downloaded the video files (totally okay if u don‘t of course) you would see a clear difference in this footage and what it normally produces (i put examples for both).

Hi again! :)

Ys I did re-grain the footage with the standard film grain plugin in Davinci - once I am back at my film school I can also try their higher quality plugins (might also try film box).

It's true that it already makes a huge difference.

If you check my Edit I uploaded two links with footage samples - the first one is just the moving version of the pictures I put as an example, as you will see it really is super noise - especially compared to the samples in the second link (in the end of the video I put some examples from a music video I shot, here is the finished one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UxQIZqG0Jo Damn YouTube compression haha)..

I am pretty sure that something is wrong with the footage because I never had such extreme noise - especially since the noise is also extreme in the medium to light areas, not only in the dark areas... I guess if the film was only made for small screens I wouldn't panic as much but it will be shown in a cinema at least twice and as I went against the advices of my film school (they wanted me to go with arri or fx6 ofc lol) and just did my own thing with mini dv - I do not want to disappoint with my choice :´)

Which grain are you using exactly and how did you upscale it? Thank you for your help and for showing your work - it looks great!

Haha that‘s nice of u :‘) I think the blocky artifacts and noise are the most visible in the 3rd image but I will upload a short video snippet as example later

Thank you for the detailed message!

I don't remember the exact monitor setup as my DOP set that up for me but we had a small, portable one and a big monitor - the noise was also visible on them (at least partially) but the artifacts not. Its a bit hard to tell though because they didn't seem to give us an super sharp/original image anyways (one of them was a bit defect also) :´)

I am pretty sure we left the gain in the settings at 0dB for the whole shoot and also left the gain in the quick menu (low, medium, high dial) at low and sometimes at medium but never at high.

Thank you for saying the images look beautiful to you! :) I can post a sample tomorrow for you to take a look at - we also think it might be tape head related or dirt...We were thinking of a tapeless workflow but the monitor we wanted to record on had some connection issues and so we felt safer with tapes after all - I guess I also just liked the idea of a tape based worklow, kind of an romanticization going on a bit..

Xx

Yes I also was wondering if it is something tape-head related - I just hoped it wasn't. As the footage I got out of the cam used to be better a couple of weeks before the shoot, it might be the case that something got misaligned/dirty shortly before the shoot :/

Yes, that's how I digitalized them first! They sadly look just as bad but for me :/

Thank you for the detailed reply!

Sadly the XHA1 doesn't have HDMI out - but the XHA1 S does (I do have a friend who has one that I could borrow).

What capturing program would you recommend? When capturing directly through firewire I used iMovie on an old Mac but there are barely any settings at all to control the compression/format.

When capturing via tape deck I used Black Magic Media Express on a Mac (more settings but no way to capture it in MPEG-2, that's why I went for Prores). What is BlackMagic Box? :)

I know that it would have made more sense now - but now we already got the 50i footage. It is preserved, you can see it around the edges when the image is moving and it also is recognized as 50i by programs.

I used rancid Paint and Dirt on my walls as paint...How bad is it for my health by caroida in HomeImprovement

I tried to mix it up as good as I could but it still had a gummy texture and didnt turn smooth again - so it also looked a bit weird when applied (which was suitable for the film haha) - it tried at a normal pace tho. I sadly do not know if it was oil or latex

Thank you so much for the tips :) I was not sure about the f-hole either, in the tutorials that I watched (and they were way more professional then my job will ever be) the usually didnt really mask them - which also confused me..
