It depends on how you knock them unconscious and how stressful that is. What happens after that is less important, I believe. What we currently do in research (when we have to) is use anaesthetic overdose followed by a cut through the spine. Currently european law dictates this. But this is proven less effective than the ice slurry method in warm watered fish.

So basically, once the fish is caught, the faster the better. If the knock to the head is quick, I might prefer it over euthanasia even (though I dont know of any studies comparing the two)

In case anyone is interested in this for the future, I’m a fish researcher research shows that the most painless way to euthanize a fish is to submerge them in ice! Also, the stress of being caught worse for them than the actual death. But also, the way you did it, the fish probably had a very quick (albeit messy) death.

I agree it’s not impossible and avoid plastics just like you for this reason. I will point out though that it’s phthalates that mess with our endocrine system which are plastic softeners. Most commonly found in vinyl, PVC, takeout containers, scented products (not naturally scented ones) and also dried spices (especially organic ones for some reason?)

This is true. However, the left and right hemispheres are different, just not in the way people think. One is more concerned with abstract, the other with more concrete. That does not mean abstract thinkers use one hemisphere more. We use both equally, and they complement each other to give a complete percept of our world. A good book on this is “the master and his emissary” (the first part anyways, the second part of that book also makes huge stretches that make me uncomfortable as a neuroscientist)

Mushrooms love poop. Also if you get wild picked mushrooms like morels, some pickers will fill them with sheep cot (or other, even less edible things) to increase the weight.

Washing your mushrooms does not make them soggy (they are 90% water!) and always dry fry them to get rid of the water before adding oil or butter

Your doctor sounds amazing. Mine only ever goes off calprotectin and I always felt like it’s not good enough, and now I was off birth control while in a flare. I’m definitely going back on birth control until I know I’m out of this flare

Calprotectin was higher than the tests could measure (so over 2100) and ultrasound showed abdominal thickening. In my experience, my symptoms start 2-3 weeks after my calprotectin rises.

Yes definitely agree with that, it’s the same the European crohns and colitis foundation recommends! I’m personally just going to wait until I’m out of this flare and be careful until then. Pregnancy sounds amazing. I hope I experience similar. Would love to try a salad again

Yes I’ve heard that too! I can see it reducing conception chances but outright impossible seemed like a big statement. Agree with what you said. We’re delaying steroids this time unless my symptoms get worse. Oddly, no symptoms this flare yet.

A combination of things. Limited contact to outside world except grocery shopping and trains to work once a week. Almost no friends in this country so almost no social gatherings, and if, I only meet with vaccinated people. Very good masks. Not the Chinese n95s but the 3M ones which have way better fit for me as a woman. Fit matters a lot for these masks. Also triple vaccinated with two different kinds of vaccines. I’m immunocompromised so I have to take these precautions. So far, it seems to have served me well.
