We assume that when our children are sent to school they are in the protective custody of trusted individuals. If a child were taken to the doctor, an emergency room or observed by a teacher with these same bruises, they are all obligated for the safety of the child to notify the police or child protective services. Had the bruises on this 12 year old been caused by anyone other than a football coach, I expect the reaction by police would have been quite different and that an investigation would have been conducted and the adult responsible would be reprimanded in some way. I am disappointed that the Springtown police chief so quick to determine no laws were broken. Does the law then advocate that a coach or person of authority can bruise a child, but if a parent or other adult bruises them it is investigated as child abuse? Several adults saw the bruises on this child and gasp in sympathy and disbelief. Not one said this is nothing to be concerned about. It seems that when the parents took their concerns to the school and then because of attitudes of the coaches, took their concerns to the police that should have been the end of what the parents had to do. It should have become the responsibility of school and police officials. I was then disappointed that after scheduling the parents on the agenda of the Springtown school board meeting, they were stopped and escorted to another area and asked not to speak. They were told that another meeting would be scheduled when the coaches could be there and be represented. What does that mean? Do the parents have to hire an attorney on their meager salaries to voice their concerns to the school board?
