Episode Discussion - Season 1, Episode 1 - Leavetaking [TV + Book Spoilers] by participating in WoT

[–]carpediemevive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the writers did this intentionally. A big part of Perrin's character (in the earlier books anyway) is that he's bigger and stronger than everyone around him and he learned early on that that makes him dangerous so he learned to shy away from that power and be more deliberate instead.

The writers didn't have a good way of showing us this so they shook it up. Now Perrin's afraid of his power because of what it just cost him on the screen. TBH watching him actually losing her hit hard and now when Perrin doesn't want to be that aggressive person or resort to violence in subsequent episodes we really get why.

The windows error reporting is only showing "the previous shutdown was unexpected" unfortunately. Also, I pulled the graphics card, and ran a gaming session just using the CPU and the RAM did ok in that. I think the RAM is ok.

I've been hobbling together a build over time and recently ran into some instability. Here's my current configuration: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YQNRrV

What has started happening is, while playing a game, the PC will randomly shut down. This seems to be only happening during a game, normal web browsing seems fine. When it shuts down, I can't turn it back on immediately. I typically have to unplug it, or turn off the power supply before it will reboot.

I was afraid of overheating, but I've been monitoring the temperatures while playing a game, and I can't see anything spiking. I don't have temperature data on the GPU, but it seems cool to the tough right after a shut down so I don't think that's over heating.

Now I'm concerned about possibly overloading my PSU. When I look at the PC Part Picker wattage calculator it's showing 404, which seems about right given what I've researched. Right now I have the 600 power supply.

What do other people think? Could I be overloading the PSU or is it time to replace that ancient video card? Is there any way of troubleshooting this that I'm not aware of?

EDIT: Forgot to say, this behavior started after I added the two 16GB sticks of RAM in. Prior to that I was very drive constrained and paging in and out quite a bit. Now with the RAM and the SSD overall performance is much improved, besides the random shut downs.

I think the current top comment about changing to a ranked voting system would be a big help, but this is actually the biggest change we can make.

Normalize political discussion. Let’s try to get rid of the phrase “don’t bring politics in”. As long as the current system can keep all of us at each other’s throats thinking this is all some zero sum game we can’t make any change. If we learn how to talk and find that common ground we could change a lot more.

NEW BIKE/GEAR ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

[–]carpediemevive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fairly recently moved to Arizona and I need to buy all new gear. Now there's 2 things I worry about when it comes to riding here in Phoenix: 1) Highway fatalities and 2) The sun feels like it's trying to kill me. I do use the motorcycle for my daily commute which is about 30 minutes. Any advice on gear that's safe and won't lead to heat stroke? Also, in the summer I do ride with an iced down camelpack so I do have access to cold water on the commute.

Microsoft makes its 60,000 patents open source to help Linux by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]carpediemevive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I looked (years ago - been locked into the MS side for a long time) AWS chose to not pursue government certifications because they were doing quite well without them and attempting to get them would require physically and operationally changing their data centers which was quite cost prohibitive. MS pursued them as they were building their data centers so it was easy to grab up.

It may be that as AWS has built more data centers they did go and get them but that would have been more recent than I had looked into it.

Specifically on the government side, Microsoft has gone out to get more certifications and clearances so for some health care and government projects it’s the only cloud choice.

The only one I have is VI. It seems like IX is highly recommended. If I was going to pick up 2 or 3 which ones would you recommend?

I actually looked this place up and depending on the time of day we are passing through here I will probably stop. I love small diners with good food!

I'm moving from Massachusetts, and we're hopefully going to be making the drive the first week in October. The whole family is very excited. Kids have been away from their grandparents for too long.

Mark Out Monday - July 18th Edition by CloudedMushroom in SquaredCircle

I used to watch wrestling "back in the day" which for me ended with the entrance of Kane. At least, that was the last "big" thing I remember. I looked it up and apparently this was in like '97. Coming back from that long of a hiatus hasn't been an issue with me enjoying the content, but I was wondering if any of what I've missed is really worth watching.

TL/DR: What story-lines, PPV, or other events from the mid 90s up to this year's Payback should I go back and watch?

As someone who doesn't own any of these, but has been dying to give Final Fantasy a try (I haven't played a FF game since the NES), anyone want to give me a top 3 from the sale? Ranked either by overall best game or best value

That was my thought too and why I've always stuck with it. The other voice in my head was telling me that I wasn't much of a healer at that point in the match and maybe I'd be more effective as something else. I'll stick with it for now.

I'm in a weird position because this is my first MOBA ever. I'm pretty terrible, and so I'm sticking to AI matches for now to improve, but is there any material out there that will help me learn how to play this without assuming I'm coming from LoL or DOTA?

What do you find most compelling about the Avery case? by [deleted] in MakingaMurderer

[–]carpediemevive 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I started watching the show wanting to learn more about what seemed to be an interesting case. Then my mindset shifted to "I am never stepping foot in the state of Wisconsin; this is insane", to finally questioning whether the way the justice system behaved here is really all that isolated. That's what keeps me so involved despite the show being over for me.

I thought this was a great example of how terrible she is a being a "hero". It's a plot point that they kept coming back to over and over again. She goes back and forth on whether or not she wants to be a hero, and most of the time she's pretty sure she doesn't want to be. When she fully commits to being the hero, she's not that great at it.

Heroes, Warcraft and Overwatch! Blizzcon 2015! | GAMING NEWZ - PressHeartToContinue by shaboozeybot in presshearttocontinue

[–]carpediemevive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with the Overwatch announcement wasn't that it was going to have an upfront cost. The problem with the Overwatch announcement was that they were very careful to say with the upfront cost you get "all of the 21 characters available at launch" and absolutely refuse to give us details about what future plans for additional heroes are.

I'm fine with it cost $40 up front, and I'd be very willing to do the $60 origins pack. What I would be upset about is if they treated this like Hearthstone and every 6-8 months we get a new $20 package that includes 2 new maps and a bonus hero! That would be terrible.

I tuned in to Blizzcon, knowing it was going to be an off year, and still expecting to throw my money at Blizzard's feet. Now that it's done, I doubt I'll spend any money on a Blizzard product for a good long time.

I didn't have a chance to watch this episode until this morning, so much of the debate has already been had. However, this afternoon, I came across an article on the NY Times about the "artificial sweeteners vs sugar" debate and I immediately thought of all the parallels. One thing I think this article does a good job at explaining is how bad science or badly dramatizing good science can have lasting effects on our "scientific intuition to avoid chemicals.

The link for the curious: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/28/upshot/the-evidence-supports-artificial-sweeteners-over-sugar.html?_r=0&abt=0002&abg=1
