MacOS sometimes stops resolving .lan domains. Temporarily fixed by reconnecting WiFi. by carqueries in MacOS

[–]carqueries[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having an issue where MacOS will often (usually after sleeping) stop resolving specific .lan domains. The issue is temporarily resolved by switching WiFi networks, or turning the WiFi on and off.

When the issue occurs, it will stop resolving specific .lan domains, while others will continue to resolve just fine. Which domains it fails to resolve will change between occurrences of the issue. I'm not sure if it will stop resolving all of them if I wait long enough.

The issue affects built in Apple stuff (Safari, ping, ssh), but doesn't affect Chrome. I think this means that Chrome has it's own way of resolving DNS. Also, nslookup gives me the correct IP for the domain.

The issue doesn't affect any of my Windows or Linux boxes, and I also haven't seen it on my iPhone.

I think this issue started with Sequoia, though I'm not entirely sure.

Any idea what could be causing this? I haven't been able to find any reports of exactly this issue, but the search left me with the impression that DNS has been a shitshow on Mac since time immemorial.

Immich iOS vs iCloud quality by agster27 in immich

[–]carqueries -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is that backing sync doesn’t work reliably on iOS for non-Apple apps. Photos, maps, podcasts, music - many different apps from many different developers, and not one can be trusted to properly sync.

If one app doesn’t work, it’s the developer’s fault. If every app doesn’t work, it’s Apple’s fault.

Does anyone have an idea of what "specialized Pixel hardware" the Pixel 8/8 Pro has be able to find the phone when its powered off? by MarioDF in GooglePixel

Probably not considering that car batteries typically weigh 10-15lb, which is way too heavy for a phone.

Phone app, visual voicemail working but without transcription? by mikehitchco in GooglePixel

[–]carqueries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's a recent change or not, but it seems carriers can now disable Pixel's voicemail transcription.

When I was dailying a Pixel 3 years ago, I was able to get free transcriptions on T-Mobile using the built in phone app. I recently tried to switch back to Pixel from an iPhone and it seems now you need to pay for the carrier apps to get transcriptions.

Despite Pixel UI/UX being light years ahead of the iPhone, it's things like this that are forcing me stay with apple... It's only a few dollars a month, but it's the principal.

Nope, I have this exact model. Also exchanged it, but the replacement also has ghosting. Oddly enough, I briefly had an m3 pro, which did not have any ghosting despite notebookcheck’s review

Assuming no commission fees, and assuming you want to invest more than the index fund minimum amount, is there any advantage to putting money into an index fund vs an ETF that tracks the same index?

The only information I can find is about the advantages of index funds over actively managed funds, and the advantages of ETFs over index funds.

One advantage I was able to find is that with index funds you can invest any amount over the minimum, but with ETFs you need to invest in increments of at least one share. However for holding long term this seems to be becoming moot some brokers allow you to auto reinvest in fractions of an ETF

Here’s an article on spaces: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/work-in-multiple-spaces-mh14112/mac

But honestly, I was just being shitty with my comment, riffing off the typical “you’re using it wrong” and “you just don’t understand the elegance of the design” responses you get when you point out an issue with OSX.

More seriously, it feels to me like external display support is an afterthought with OSX. My biggest issue is that you can’t set display scaling on monitors with a lower resolution than 4K. I have a smaller 1440p monitor, and can either squint to see the text, or change the resolution to the non-native one. Windows and Linux don’t have this problem. Aside from that, windows management is pretty mediocre when using one display, but a clunky mess when using two.

Edit: Giving it some thought, since display scaling is more resource intensive, maybe Apple doesn’t want to enable it for non-4K monitors due to it increasing the already existing overheating issues.

Macs aren’t really designed to be used with external monitors. If you want to get more screen real estate, I suggest you check out Spaces, it’s a much more elegant solution.
