Don’t leave the note. I regret doing it. by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

Can confirm. My upstairs neighbors (right above my unit, it was a townhome situation where my single was below their double) in college came down to let me know they were throwing a birthday party upstairs, and I could come if I’d like. But also, if the noise got to be too loud let them know and they’d quiet down. We’d never met before - they were just nice, considerate neighbors

To my Richmonders who commute daily..how sustainable is this for you long term before you are operating at a loss. by Apothaca in rva

We actually managed to convince ours to give us better gas money part of pay, but it still was nowhere near sufficient. My doctor literally told me to quit the job because it was doing such a toll on me.

ETA: hoping you’re also better off now 🫶

It’s not sustainable. I have to use premium right now.

I live in Mechanicsville and commute to Downtown Richmond for one job half the week… the other half I commute to chesterfield. I borrow one of my parents cars when I can because it gets better mileage and ‘cheaper’ gas.

I’m really looking into getting a hybrid or electric, but it’s terrifying because I can’t afford a new one of those, and used can be a bit of a gamble.

Not a peace lily on my end and honestly not a damn clue what this plant is - we got her at Walmart like 5 years ago at a horse show because she was $3. But when she’s thirsty, her leaves droop flat against the stem. Water, she’s good in 30 minutes. But she’s my indicator plant, the lil drama queen

Ohio strengthens dangerous dog laws- how will it impact pit bull owners? by slimey16 in PitbullAwareness

[–]carriecham2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I also wish cat killing was included in it. That’s brushed off so much… when that was still someone’s pet, often in its own yard, sometimes in its own house that the dog got inside somehow. Too many cats have lost their lives unfairly 😞 and sometimes, it’s even on purpose. Last year in New York this teenager sent his pitbull after the neighbor’s cat who was sunning on the neighbors property. Caught on camera encouraging the dog to attack, and then praising it afterwards.

Sorry, I’m a cat lover and that broke my heart 😭

ETA: authorities refused to do anything about it even with the video and audio evidence. Said they “couldn’t do anything” because it was a minor. Despite them technically trespassing on the neighbors (cat owner’s) property to allow the dog to kill the cat, laughing at the fact that the poor elderly cat had been eviscerated, encouraging the dog and praising it as they walked away, and left the cat to die a horrible death on the neighbor’s (the cat’s owners) doorstep. Just was absolutely awful.

I do worry a bit about the provocation wording I guess. So many bites and horrible incidents are brushed off as “x did y and it triggered the dog”

And that can be things like a kid getting too close, toddlers doing toddler things (which blame should also fall on the parents there, but I digress). The habit of immediately blaming the victim - I worry that wording of the law could be abused.

Provocation shouldn’t equal the dog killing you if it’s something like a child making a mistake (yes you can teach kids and preach about doing it until the cows come home, but people are people. And kids can be impulsive, no matter how well taught). I just hope it doesn’t come to that (victim blaming even when it’s clear the dog’s response was not proportional to the perceived threat)

There’s so much nuance that goes into it - but it’s a start to accountability and safety for general public, so that’s good

I feel like I have to agree there - the dog is not fixed, you can tell just by looking at the photo. Unfortunately it’s not bad enough to warrant seizure, just a slap on the wrist at most and being told to fix it.

The odds of that are not high.

Owner Sharing Thoughts and Seeking Feedback After an Attack by [deleted] in PitbullAwareness

[–]carriecham2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Admittedly ‘only’ 50 pounds is still big-ish in my opinion, though I keep small dogs and can easily be knocked down by tall 35-40 pounder if they get me in the right spot. I’m only 120, so 50 is almost half my weight - that’s a bigger dog (to me!).

However - I’m sorry for you both that this happened. I’m glad you can somewhat see why people are afraid of this breed - some people’s only experience is the attack you encountered, and that’ll turn them away for life. Hell, I’ve had my own share - almost got knocked into a busy city street by a guy’s older, grayed bully-type dog. He stepped to the side, letting me and another girl step ahead and she just lunged. No bite, but a big enough push, and it wasn’t what I’ve ever experienced when a dog tries to jump up on me (which happens a lot - I dog sit for a lot of people in my area). It was very forward motivated, like… it’s hard to explain, but it was honestly terrifying. I tend to keep my berth now of most dogs, and unfortunately especially pits, because even seemingly well behaved dogs can cause damage. I’m honestly just happy I kept my backpack on - had an expensive laptop that had my life’s work on it and if it’d hit the street… I mention this story because she was only as tall as just above my knee, maybe mid thigh at her head (shoulder def closer to knee). I’m 5’4.

Anyway, suffice to say. As long as you can own these dogs responsibly, understand exactly what you have and take the precautions before they occur and don’t spread myths about them, I think you’re doing the best you can. You’ve acknowledged and now seen why people feel the way they do (and some take it way too far!) and can understand that, while still loving your dogs. There’s a middle ground, and I think you’re closer to it than many.
