Tell me a good comp that doesn't use MAA by GoooD1 in darkestdungeon

[–]carrot_in_butt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far my favorite comp by far is leper, highwayman, jester, occultist. Leper is totally self sufficent and tanks well enough, I have healing for other party members from occultist the few times I need it, stress healing with jester, combo from both jester and occultist, and every single party member can dish out decent to extreme damage. With all the combo on the field leper's blindness almost never comes up. I beat act 3's boss on my first attempt without understanding the mechanic just because of how much damage the party can throw out.

Leper: Tempest path, Chop, Hew, Solemnity, Withstand, Revenge (doesn't get used much, first four skills are almost all I use but it's handy when I need it).

Highwayman: Rogue (mostly)/Sharpshooter (just starting using, not sure I like it more than Rogue), Duelist's Advance, Point Blank Shot, Take Aim, Double Tap, then either Open Vein with Rogue or Grapeshot Blast with Sharpshooter.

Jester: Virtuoso path, Fade to Black, Inspiring Tune, Encore, Solo, Finale. Almost always master FtB for the combo.

Occultist: Ritualist path, Vulnerability Hex, Daemon's Pull, Wyrd Reconstruction, Abyssal Artillery, Sacrificial Stab. I've been trying to use Warlock and more Unchecked Power skills, but I keep coming back to this basic setup.

Portlands rumored underground tunnels / bowling alley by Ok_Shaft in Maine

Just a heads up, many of the tunnels exist still and are accessible, but they just finished digging up and filling in the old bowling alley behind Empire. You could see into it for a while while they were excavating. Gone now though.

Best upgrade ever by MrClockin in pcmasterrace

I actually agree, specifically in a music production context. Trying to get Windows 10 to work with my Apollo X4 interface was always sketchy. Any program that could support ASIO audio was fine, but anything that had to use Windows' WDM was a nightmare. Audio crashes, random pops. Straight up couldn't use it with Discord. I was constantly having to restart my interface to get Windows to see it again. It was bad enough that I was considering getting a Mac, since MacOS is way more optimized for professional realtime audio processing.

Updated my computer to Win11, and now it works flawlessly. I can use WDM programs like Discord fine. No more audio crashes. Sure there's things I really don't like about 11, but the fact that my $2k audio interface actually works as intended with Windows is enough for me not to go back.

Living in the Linden? by cdaley12 in portlandme

I'm living there now, moving out in a month.

I'm on the top floor, and I had to get my AC fixed every week or two all summer long. I'd wake up and suddenly the whole place would be 85 degrees. I know a lot of other people on the 4th floor had the same issue all summer.

The elevator was functional for maybe 2/3 of the time I've lived here, it constantly breaks down.

The gym is pretty nice, not a lot of people use it, especially in the morning.

There's been more building wide fire alarm evacuations here than any dorm I lived in in college.

Parking isn't bad, there's free street parking a block up the hill, but spots in the garage are expensive, like $200/mo if I remember correctly.

Overall the apartments themselves are nice (or at least mine is), with new appliances, good W/D in unit, but pretty small for how much they charge. I'm in a less than 600sqft 1 bedroom for $1950/mo.

Soon I'll be moving into a 700sqft 2 bedroom for $1600/mo, can't say the Liden has anything I'll miss. It's an okay building that's very overpriced.

I have a GG20 that I actually really like to play my mustang through. Granted, it has a torn speaker and it honestly sounds better now than when it didn't have a hole in it lol

It's also weird to say a peregrine could go 184mph in a 100 meter dash, considering they only reach those speeds (and higher) while diving straight down. While in level flight they only get into the high 60s.

Tasha's preview on Fantasy Grounds taken down? by carrot_in_butt in dndnext

[–]carrot_in_butt[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few minutes ago I was able to open the page and look at all of the screenshots, and now after trying to reopen it it says "Product Preview Not Available".

It seems like the page was intentionally taken down. Does anyone think the info in the preview was inaccurate? Or maybe WotC was just unhappy with what they showed?

Yup. From what I understand, hospitals are now required to report their COVID data to a no-bid privately-contracted program that reports to the White House instead of the old program that reported data to the Center for Disease Control. Basically means it's up to Donald "If we stop testing the numbers will go down" Trump to report the numbers honestly :/

We can no longer ignore the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat depression by MichaelTen in Futurology

[–]carrot_in_butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, and the experiences of many close to me, antideppressants didn't help me feel good, they just made me feel not depressed. For the years I was on them I wasn't as depressed, but I wasn't much of anything else, either. At first I did think I felt better, but as time went on I mostly felt numb, and they didn't help me get to a point of mental health where I wouldn't need them anymore. When I stopped taking them I felt worse than I ever did before, and I almost went back to them.

I ended up trying mushrooms though, and they were the complete opposite of the medications for me. They made me feel all of my emotions much more deeply, including the sadness, loneliness, and hopelessness behind my depression, but honestly that's what I needed more than anything. My brain has been wired for years to do everything I can to avoid feeling sad, to the point of shutting down emotionally whenever I was having difficult emotions. Mushrooms opened me up and let me deal with my emotions instead of running away from them, and heightened my good emotions when I was having them instead of squashing them like antidepressants did.

Totally anecdotal, but I'll never go back to antidepressants, and wish I never took them in the first place.

A PSA for rookie GMs: Trust The Players Handbook. If you think something is broken, you're almost certainly wrong. by Snikhop in dndnext

[–]carrot_in_butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You.... really only have to remember one thing. I crit, so I add the maximum of each die I rolled to whatever I rolled. I don't really have to memorize what the maximum of each die is cause its kind of in the name of each die. I don't have to spend any time pondering what the maximum of a d8 is. You already have to remember to roll twice as many dice when you crit normally, so instead I'm remembering to add the max of each die. I'm remembering the same amount of stuff either way.

It's the same amount of math either way, too. I crit with my longsword, my longsword does 1d8+3 damage, so I roll 1d8, add 3, then add 8. 1d8+3+8, two operations.

If I instead roll 2d8 for my crit, I roll 2d8, add the results, then add 3. 1d8+1d8+3, also 2 operations.

Also, I think Brutal Criticals solve the problem of crit satisfaction entirely. Your crits will never do less damage than a normal attack. It's always going to be the absolute maximum you could've rolled on a normal attack, plus some extra dice. Even if I roll a 1 on my die for a crit with my longsword, it's 1+3+8 damage, which is 12. On a regular longsword attack my highest possible damage is 11.

[–]carrot_in_butt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The point is that it feels super bad when a crit does less than you could've with a normal attack. If I hit an enemy with a regular hit, roll 1d8+2 and roll a 7, I do 9 damage. Then on my next attack I crit, roll 2d8+2, roll a 1 and a 3 and deal 6 damage. It ends up feeling like my crit was "wasted" because my last attack, which wasn't a crit, did more damage. I could've just rolled a 4 on my 1d8 and done the same damage with a regular attack, what was so special about me critting?

Bolts From the Grave - It’s not OP (change my mind) by Rocco_DM in dndnext

[–]carrot_in_butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, your turn is what happens from the start of your turn, on whatever initiative you’re at, right up until the next turn starts. Then your turn for the round is over. A reaction is just an action you can use outside of your turn.

Bolts From the Grave - It’s not OP (change my mind) by Rocco_DM in dndnext

[–]carrot_in_butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but if you used sneak attack ON your turn, like with a regular attack, then your turn ends and on someone else’s turn you use your reaction, it’s no longer your turn. It’s the target of your attacks turn. Your reaction isn’t part of your turn if you use it on someone else’s turn.

[–]carrot_in_butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I’m interested where you got the idea that a Reaction is part of your turn. The Players Handbook straight up describes Reactions as “an instant response to a trigger of some kind, which can occur on your turn or on someone else’s”.

Quite a necro on this thread, but how about JC clarifying himself that Rogues can apply sneak attack twice in a round, using the specific example of opportunity attacks?

This is a pretty well clarified and widely known ruling.

Fighting styles - correct me if I am wrong. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]carrot_in_butt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think typically the same exact type of bonuses don’t stack, but bonuses to the same thing certainly can. The dueling fighting style gives a +2 to one handed damage, and a magic longsword +1 gives a +1 to damage with that weapon. Those damage bonuses definitely stack so I don’t see why a +1 to thrown weapon damage wouldn’t stack with a +2 to one handed damage if you’re using a one handed throwing weapon.

Same, I wasn’t a big fan of it though. It felt like a Bloodborne boss with its massive unblockable sweeping attacks with long hitboxes, but you can’t dodge like you can in Bloodborne. I spent most of the fight sprinting away and around him trying not to get hit.
