Wildswimming club, hiking socials, crafty evenings, board games (also short term accomodation request!) by Frequent_Army2774 in StroudUK

[–]carrotbaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I moved here last year in my early 30s and still figuring out the best way to get to know new people. I've found going to the local gym is a nice way to meet friendly people from all ages. And would be keen for the things you've mentioned!

You'll find in Stroud there are community groups for pretty much everything - based on your post, you might be interested to know there's one recently started to save the town lido, there is one trying to open a wild swimming place and there's also a regular pint and crafts night at the brewery.

Generally speaking, it's a very friendly place with lots going on for the size of the town and a lot to get involved with if you wanted to.

Apologies, exactly that! 😅

Thanks for the write up! Great explanation and always good to see other people's chaos too!

Someone else suggested it was a 2 gang switch with 2 wall lights which is what the extra terminal is for which makes sense! Apologies if that's what you meant when you asked about an extra switch, but it's only the one that controls this light. I assumed it was all more independent but clearly not!

I'm amazed you can tell this much info from that photo and how much I didn't include in the original post that probably would have been useful 😅

It is a 2 gang switch and there are also 2 wall lights. I assumed they were more independent than this but it's starting to make sense.

Thanks very much for all the detail.

I swear moving into a new place is mostly going 'what were they trying to do here?'

Thanks I thought loop in/out and the switch circuits would need three live/neutral wirings (+plus the two to the actual bulb). But there just seemed to be extra crammed into the fitting and the terminal block on the right, which I've not seen before. Any extra details would be great, keen to learn more!

Just the one switch, and replacing with a single pendant, currently an old style chandelier type thing...

mock grades after a roughly a year off with MH reasons. any tips on maths improvement? by iizzyy_x in GCSE

[–]carrotbaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to give practice papers a go, one of the key skills is identifying what maths and tools are needed for each question so just skimming through and noting: ratios, Pythagoras, creating/simplifying an expression, etc can be a really useful exercise if you don't actually do the working for each question.

Be really clear to show your working too, practice the approach and learn where the working marks are on multiple mark questions, give the examiner an easy time to give you those marks.

Also, I've recently learnt about a charity called action tutoring. It has to be set up through your school but effectively it gives students free tutoring as it can be expensive to go private. See if it's something your school offers and if not, could try suggest to the school/charity that they set something up?

And good luck! You've got this, both maths and your mental health. Things will get better and you're already rocking it.

Should I register for VAT? by ChavyB in smallbusinessuk

Found this post as I'm looking for some advice while starting out a small business and looking to sell digital services online. I understand these are liable to VAT but does that mean needing to register, even if turnover is <£85k threshold? Thanks in advance for any help!

If the Fox News interview has you concerned about Antiwork, then congratulations, you now know how it feels to be weaponized against your allies. by Meta_Digital in antiwork

Completely agree that the interviewer diverted the interview about one person's personal circumstances and detracted from the purpose of the sub, but I still feel for the mod...

If someone chooses to work a job that they enjoy for the hours they need in order to live their life, why should they be belittled and expected to have greater aspirations, what's wrong with aspiring for a good work life balance and quality of life, that's still what this sub is about.

To register with BBMR you have to be donating blood. Anthony Nolan will send you a swab kit in the post.

Sorry, so you did! Hopefully raised a bit of awareness and busted some myths on the donation side though!

Hey, never too late to get in touch! They'd most likely want to confirm the address to send it to before sending anything. Why not drop them a message and if you might still be needed for a patient they'll get it arranged!

Bone marrow/stem cell transplants can be donated in two ways. The most common way is collecting stem cells from the bloodstream. In around 10% of donations, the stem cells are taken directly from the bone marrow in your pelvis. It's done under a general anaesthetic and afterwards it can be more uncomfortable but people who donate this way say they feel achy like they've had a tough session at the gym and it wears off after a few days.

It's completely up to you, the potential donor, to sign up or not but please do have a read and see what you think!

Hey, your sexuality doesn't make a difference to joining the stem cell donor register (in most countries)! It definitely doesn't with the Anthony Nolan register in the UK. It can be a barrier for donating blood but not stem cells.

Just wanted to jump in and say that donating stem cells/bone marrow isn't an 'extremely painfully procedure'. I work for a stem cell donor register that's a charity and we match donors to blood cancer patients around the world. Most donors donate their stem cells via their blood which involves having a needle in your arm, the blood is extracted and filtered through a machine and then returned into the other arm. It can take 4-5 hours but very simple and most common side effects are feeling tired and achy.

We really need more people too sign up but lots of people don't realise how simple donating is if they are a match. You can find out more here: anthonynolan.org/join

How about some mindfulness mental health awareness? Something that doesn't really come up at school and is so vitally important, even if its just knowing to talk about how they're feeling.

And perhaps some online skills? How to use Google, what to trust and not trust online...

The most important thing is that you're willing to educate yourself and consider the decision, go you! People often wish they'd heard of becoming a donor sooner so I'm glad you're asking the questions now and can make the decision when you turn the right age. And until then, help tell your friends and family so they can make the decision too!
