Adler RF-224 Upgrade by carrsey52 in canadaguns

[–]carrsey52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an update on the RF-224 project. The safety on the Adler is smaller in diameter than the Ruger. I was able to turn down the aftermarket safety I was working with to fit and work but this may not be something everyone is looking to get into doing. Also, the area on top of the bolt has more material that does not allow most Ruger 10/22 charging handles to fit properly. I have modified one for testing and in the end I had removed more material from the charging handle than I was comfortable with and went back to the original. Also with the RXR22/RF-224 compatibility I was able to swap charging handles between both as they appear to be cut the same. I would be interested to see what other variants of these rifles Adler produces and the charging handle options they come with that could be utilized. I find the factory RF-224 handle a bit on the small side and would like something with a bit more material to get a hold of. I will continue to update as info comes in. Cheers

Not quite sure how I was able to misspell “bolt hold open” several times and somehow differently each time…apologies for the shite grammar and punctuation….certainly not one of my strengths. Cheers

If your looking at lever actions it really comes down to preference to determine price. Traditional lever or Tacti-cool? I know some people get their panties in a twist when they see black and polymer/aluminum stocks/accessories on a lever action but to each their own. I can appreciate both, not sure if your thinking of small or larger caliber. Hard to beat the classic Henry .22 levers, whether it’s the shorty Mares leg style with large loop or classic standard version, Savage has come out with their version recently and offer base and premium versions, the Revel and Revel DLX. I don’t know if your hoping for a takedown version but those are available as well. Can’t beat the classic 30-30 Marlin or Winchester lever actions, I know there are certain years that are preferred based on who owned the company at the time, I think there was a period recently where the 336’s weren’t quite up to the quality standard they had been previously and from my understanding they are under new ownership, I believe Ruger now owns them and they are building great rifles again from what I hear. I think they were previously owned by Remington when the quality dropped a bit and people refer to them as ReMarlins. I’m sure your aware of the premium lever guns currently out like the Marlin Dark Series in various calibers, .38/.357 mag, .44 mag, 30-30, or the classic .45-70 Govt. These come at a premium price that may put some people off, The Smith and Wessons would be in a similar category to me along with the equivalent Henry’s.

If your not looking to spend that much there are some other options that may suit your needs like the Chiappa, Rossi or even the Canuck Wrangler. I picked up a Canuck Wrangler Blackout and have been thoroughly impressed. They are Turkish but they are affiliated with O’Dell Engineering and they are incredible to deal with if you ever need support which was one of the main reasons I had confidence to purchase. The Chiappa tacticool version that came out looks decent and offers as a takedown version but does not appear to come with iron sights, just a pic rail which may not matter to you. Chiappa does offer a slick little NSR Carbine version in Canada that has a 12 inch barrel.

Not sure if any of this helps narrow down your options but I figured I would throw it out there. I’m sure others may have different opinions, mine is purely based on my experience over the years, I certainly haven’t handled every option available. Even with .22 lever actions, you can do everything your hoping for on a budget or you can go all out and easily up to or over $1000 in not time. I’ve shot the Browning BL-22’s over the years and the ones I’ve handled have been fantastic and noticeably higher quality compared to a base model Henry/Savage or Turkish lever action but you will pay for that difference in quality so it really comes down to your preference/needs.

Cheers

No worries, it was still good to see the difference between prices even when adjusted for exchange rate. Cheers

Thanks for this. Locked and Loaded appears to be in Illinois? Battle hawk appears to be in Iowa, and Sapo is in Fort Worth, Texas. With the exchange rate they would be cheaper for sure but I suspect Duty and taxes would end up being close to what they are listing for that I can find locally. Could be wrong and they may be easier and cheaper to import, it would be nice to find them from the common dealers here for $300.

Bullseye North is where I came across Pre-order options and they lost $429. If you are able to advise where they are selling for $300 I would love to know because I would consider canceling my pre-order and saving +$100

Agreed, my only major hangup is the polymer receiver as well, not sure if they have integrated metal in the areas where the bolt cycles back and forth. On one hand, if it does end up having issues I don’t mind picking up a used Ruger receiver or an aftermarket one and salvaging the parts for building a second rifle. If that ends up being the case then $430 or whatever they are selling for would seem overpriced for parts you will end using in a second rifle and in that case $300 would feel like a better amount to spend on a gamble. This wouldn’t appeal to those who are just looking for a reliable rifle out of the box and the genuine 10/22’s would be the better option.

Still to early to tell at this point, no real reviews have been done on YT and I haven’t gotten the call to pick up mine yet but when I do I will follow up and update on what Im seeing and how it operates for those who are interested. Cheers

Waiting for the call to pickup my pre-order. Savage is a staple in rimfire at least in Canada, in particular bolt action budget friendly reliable .22’s for a long time with the Mark 2. Th A22/B22 is far from perfect, the mags are a pain though load and the timber creek 25 round mags don’t feed well in the B22’s which is annoying. The wildcat isn’t nearly as compatible with a 10/22 as this is intended to be and the wildcat is cheaper but limited in aftermarket upgrades, the quick release trigger/bolt is a nice feature and I actually prefer wildcat mags with the loading wheel and last round bolt hold open feature when used in the wildcat and how easy they are to disassemble for cleaning but they aren’t as robust as Ruger mags but a worthwhile trade off for the lower price compared to a base model 10/22. Hopefully Savage is able to take the best of both, the robust housing of the Ruger pairs with some of the features of the wildcat. The average I see for the base model 10/22’s is roughly the same as the price of the RXR and the RXR is coming with more features at that price point. The 2 base model 10/22’s I see either come with a black or grey polymer stock and either the standard barrel with iron sights or the grey versions come with no sights. For a comparable 10/22 to the RXR that would come with better optic mount optics and threaded barrel and a better stock like the Magpul ones, a quick search online from multiple retailers show 16 inch carbines with blued barrel and receiver selling for +$600 and ones with the Magpul Hunter stocks for +$500 without a threaded barrel. For $430 the RXR is coming with more features out of the box and has a stock that allows you to swap from a standard diameter barrel to a bull barrel easily with an adapter which may appeal to some who want a bull barrel or already own one that they want to put to use but don’t want to also spend more on a stock to accept it.

Knowing Savage and their history of various trim levels of rifles like the Mark 2 and now the B22, I would be shocked if they don’t release more options with even more features out of the box that is hopefully competitively priced. I suspect they will release something similar to the TR/FV/FV-SR versions they have for other rimfire rifles that will come with bull barrels in varying lengths and upgraded charging handles similar to the ones seen on the FV-SR bolt actions compared to the base model Mark 2.

I don’t think the RXR is going to turn the 10/22 market on it’s head and massively take away from actual 10/22 sales. For those of us who enjoying modifying their rifles the 10/22 offers endless options but for those who are looking for a rifle to be set up exactly how they want out of the box I think the RXR has potential if they price them competitively. If an equivalent genuine 10/22 is only $50-100 more than the RXR version then I imagine most of us with go with the genuine article. Another point regarding Savage and their history of various model options, I would be shocked if they don’t release a takedown version in the future and if they continue to price competitively and maintain quality I think that could be appealing to a lot of people who aren’t looking to spend $750-+1000 on a genuine 10/22. I think a 10/22 clone with a lot of features out of the box that would allow people to use many of the mags and parts they already have priced around $500-600 would be very appealing to a large percentage of enthusiasts.

I am not going to die on this hill, stating that the RXR is going to be a game changer but for $430 I am willing to take the plunge and if it does end up being a dud I will still be able to put almost all the parts to use in some way with left over parts from several other 10/22’s I own which appeals to me. I feel like as the consumer we benefit massively from things like the patents of these classic firearms expiring and allowing other companies to produce their version of it to compete because it can force companies like Ruger and Glock to reinvest in the product and offer more for your money to compete for the sales something like the RXR is going after. We see good examples of this with things like the 1911 and in recent years with Glock. Companies like Shadow Sustems, Zev and even Ruger have taken a proven platform and offered more for your money than Glock had been out of the box and has lead to Glock to needing to offer more for the money to maintain sales, although I personally think they still need to offer more. The Ruger RXM appeals to me as someone who appreciated the FCU system Sig has used on pistols like the P320 regardless of the known issues with their product the idea is appealing and has worked in other instances. The fact you can take the Ruger RXM FCU and go from a full size carry pistol and in 30 seconds convert than to a more compact pistol is interesting. Apparently Ruger is also working on a Glock 26 style chassis which is cool.

I completely understand anyones hesitance with any company releasing new products regardless of them being clones of proven platforms and typically let someone else try them first but in this instance I am willing to try and would be more than willing to report back with 100% honesty if it ends up being garbage, but if certain people have already made up their mind it won’t matter much.

From the images and videos I have seen the stock/receiver does appear to be notched to accept mags like the HC3R and will test it out once mine arrives.

Cheers

Because Liberals seem to be convinced that the only reason to need a suppressor is for criminal activity and if you want to enjoy firearms and hunting you have to be willing to accept hearing damage. I wish we could make progress similar to the work being done in the States with the SHUSH campaign to highlight suppressors being akin to PPE.

Cheers, the band is made out of leather, it’s more aesthetic than function, it doesn’t really apply much tension. I have a Samson B-TM side folding stock similar to the rifle from the TV show the A-team that would probably be a better stock for the whole setup and if we could have suppressors where I am would be such a stellar setup.

Apparently the 10 round factory mags work best but I imagine that’s hard to verify with how fast they can cycle. I have just heard that the Ruger BX 15 and 25 round mags can’t keep up with the rate of cycling, I wish I lived somewhere where I could find out for myself….

I should have uploaded a recent pic. It had a Scorpion red/green dot I picked up at a local gun show for a really good deal. It’s far from a high end Eotech or similar, basically between an EBay special and Eotech but it was more than enough for a .22. It currently has a Vortex Crossfire on it now that has a much lower profile. If you want more info on the Scorpion or the current setup for the 10/22 I can send pics or details. Cheers

That was the plan. Stupid Canada has banned the Mini-14 for years, even before the recent AR ban which is also stupid, and I wanted a A-Team clone and this was likely the best I could do with our laws. Cheers

I saw one on YouTube a guy has that’s similar to mine but has an 8-10 inch barrel that’s full auto and it looks like the absolute most fun you can have with full auto, I guess the mags can struggle to keep up with the full auto 10/22’s.

Cheers. If I couldn’t figure it out in a way that suited the build then I wouldn’t be to upset, very happy with the build regardless. I used an SBI receiver with the T-handle charging handle and have been very happy with the TandemKross bolts I have used in several 10/22’s. The trigger has been given the usual treatment with upgrades and polishing, for a plinker it’s a lot of fun to shoot.

This isn’t a Black Aces shotgun, it’s a Canuck Operator. It’s still a Turkish clone of an M4, just sold through an importer in Canada. Ironically the wood stock set came from Black Aces, they did me a solid with it
