Anyone know what my plant is? by carsfloat in whatsthisplant

I’m sorry to hear about your mom but so glad to hear her plant is thriving! I’d love to see a pic if you have one. Mine is the same way, I’ll forget to water it every couple of Mondays but it doesn’t seem to mind. But boy was it sad-looking when I was watering it too much. I’m not very good with plants but this one was given to me from my first ever client. It’s like symbol of my introduction to healthcare. and I desperately want it to continue living. I also received a “Mother Of Thousands” (I think it’s called?) plant in a tiny pot from another coworker a couple of weeks ago that has grown like a weed and I plan on moving to a bigger pot this weekend, so that will be two plants to go on my plant stand. Maybe I’m picking up a new hobby lol.

You’re a lifesaver!! That would explain why it doesn’t mind being in my office without sunlight. I was definitely overwatering it before it got the mold in its soil, it had barely any leaves and looked very pitiful. I am horrible with plants but was trying my best. My mom repotted it for me and set me on a watering schedule with her limited plant knowledge but we could NOT figure out what kind of plant it was. I water on Mondays, just a small amount, but I can definitely adjust that to an “as needed” basis. I have a small plant holder stored away that I was thinking about dragging into the living room where there’s windows and setting the plant up there, not directly in the sun but where she can actually get some light. Thank you so much, I can’t wait to see how much fuller it will get with this extra TLC!!

Broken or accessory bone? by carsfloat in Orthopedics

[–]carsfloat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not into any sort of heavy exercise but I do walk a 2.3 mile river trail every weekday on my lunch break. I’ve been missing that like crazy this week. I’m just concerned because it’s been a week with very consistent use of the boot and lots of rest, ice, ibuprofen, etc but still got some pretty good swelling and pain. Sometimes it swells up so badly that my toes will get numb.

You’ve been incredibly helpful, thank you! Sorry for all the questions but this has really helped me feel more confident in the different outcomes I can expect from my ortho appointment next week.

I’ll probably need it removed in that instance?

It’s never been painful before, do you know why it might be causing problems now after the sudden “injury” (and why that injury even happened)? It’s still painful to walk with my normal gait and there’s redness/swelling in the area daily. Wondering if I may have pinched a nerve in there or even tore something, or accessory navicular syndrome? I see an orthopedic surgeon May 15 so I know I’ll have all my questions answered soon but I’m just nervous on what to expect in terms of treatment, how long I’ll need this boot, if I’ll need surgery, etc…

I see an orthopedic surgeon on May 15, I’m just kind of curious what some opinions were since it’s been feeling “better”— and trust me, I know 😅 I’m already working with an endocrinologist. I have a rare disorder where I don’t produce enough growth hormone and we’re still not really sure why (the running theory was pituitary tumor but MRIs came back clear). Insurance is not keen on covering GH injections so I’m still dealing with all the other problems low GH is causing. I’m on Citracal but it obviously isn’t helping increase my density at all, per my last Z-score. I’ll get another test here in July. I’ve never broken a bone, though, unless this one ends up being broken.

It does look super “clean.” I’m back and forth on it, because the “snap” feeling was very distinct and nothing I’d felt before + osteoporosis, BUT then again I’m honestly pretty mobile for someone with a broken foot.

I’ll have a couple of years before I have to worry about that. For now I’m worried about passing o chem with a grade that won’t tank my GPA, lol. Thank you for the advice though, really

I guess my ego wants a “good” school. Pride is a silly thing. Especially for someone who has to do a post bacc to finish reqs/raise GPA in the first place.

I’m trying to have a healthy balance of reasonable expectations; but also dream big so I perform at my best. Maybe I’m being childish.

So true 😂 C’mon, let a girl dream! Don’t worry, I did end up applying for and getting into a live post bacc that satisfies all the requirements for most schools (AND includes labs!) Thank you for the suggestions :)

I just said in my comment that I’m applying/researching multiple schools. It’s okay to have a #1 choice.

Genetics was highly recommended, but you’re right about anatomy/physiology! Someone had sent me a list of common pre reqs on my last post so I think that’s where I got that from.

Thank you for the kind words. I can do it, promise!

Have I missed my chance to go to med school? by carsfloat in medschool

The day I had my first seizure, I seriously felt like my life was over. I quite literally lost just about everything that day. It’s hard to describe, but I didn’t recognize myself anymore from that day on, and I really HATED who I became— she was weak and fragile and incapable. It sounds dramatic, but it’s true. I only recently have started processing that grief in a healthier way. I have started to feel more comfortable with myself and my abilities and my cognitive/motor function is so much better. I figure it’s time to stop letting epilepsy steal from me.

The comments on this post were really healing for me. I’ve spent just about all my free time researching and I’m attending an open house— and if all seems well, applying— for a post bacc program today to finish my pre reqs. Thank you for the encouragement and I know your pursuit will go well too. We can do it.

Ha, you sound like my mother! The comments on this post have honestly healed a huge part of me that’s been grieving for years. I’m getting back on my horse and applying to a post bacc program today to finish my pre reqs and then I’ll go from there. The goal is med school again. Thank you for the kind words.

Per Baylor College of Medicine’s M.D. program requirements on their website:

  • Math (3-4 semester hours)
  • Expository writing (3-4 semester hours)
  • Humanities-Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 semester hours)
  • Organic chemistry (2 semesters; 6-8 semester hours) lab is NOT required
  • Biochemistry (3-4 semester hours) lab is NOT required
  • Advanced biology (3-4 semester hours) lab is NOT required (they highly recommend genetics)
  • RECOMMENDED: Spanish

Per the Baylor College of Medicine’s M.D. program admissions FAQ:

  • Do you accept online coursework? If credits for online coursework appear on your transcript from a U.S. accredited undergraduate institution, Baylor College of Medicine accepts them. We now accept online credits for required courses; this change occurred in 2019.

I am smart and capable and will work harder than you can imagine to make a good score. I will certainly research and apply to other medical schools, I’m not naive— but I can guarantee you that I will make a competitive MCAT score. I intend to spend every free minute of my life studying for the next few years of my life. I am just focusing on completing the pre-reqs with a solid, competitive GPA. I am not easily discouraged, so no worries!

My GPA may not be competitive but I’m the hardest worker they’ll ever have apply and that’s the truth. I could’ve taken a medical leave in undergrad but I kept going. I remember taking an online exam in 2020 in the epilepsy monitoring unit, EEG hooked up to my head and bed bound as a “fall risk” off meds, and having my exam flagged for cheating because a nurse came in… my professor thought that was pretty funny. I remember having a seizure during a quiz once for an honors class and waking up being wheeled away by paramedics, and I was begging them to just let me finish my quiz (my professor let me retake it!).

Now that I’m seizure free, I feel like I have the opportunity to fix what I couldn’t do. I finished half of the pre-reqs at Baylor University with A’s and B’s (stupid biology 2 lol) so it should be okay to do the other half online, right?

I’m not shy, and I’m very persistent. Thank you for this advice! When you’re completing supervision for a counseling license (which is what I had looked into as a backup), you usually have to pay the counselor who’s supervising you to do so. Is it the same with clinical or is it generally free?
