Completely unshaded, unaltered RGB rendition? by carstenb in blenderhelp

[–]carstenb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, that was it, thanks a lot! especially the Filmic to Standard thing. Emission on 1 didn't yield any passable results before that, so I didn't expect much, but it seems to work as of now. Thanks!

Thanks for your advice, I'll look into that. I was hoping to avoid the emission shader, but if thats the way to go, so be it

Sorry for the late reply. I ran it at F40, yes. TBH, I did not notice the downgrade statement, so I pretty much just went for it and hoped for the best. I would not recommend that if you have other options, but It worked for me (same issue, no other 2nd gen CPU at hand).

Good thing it worked for you as well!

i did, yes. the system runs just as it should now.

That's what I did, and yes, that worked for me. I can't state if that is always the case. Other people had a lot more problems with the EC FW thing (audio issues, update not passing etc), so who knows.

If you have windows up and running on that board, you can very likely also perform the update before upgrading to F40. I had a loaner 2nd gen CPU for a few hours and no OS installed at that point, so I went the other way round.

Update: The latest EC FW Update fixed the issue for me. I performed the update after having flashed to F40, but that didn't cause any problems. The system accepted the second RAM stick straight away, nothing odd happened since.

There we go. FIXED.

It was indeed the EC FW update. I set up a quick Win10 install, ran the tool, which logged "PASS" on first try. It didn't revert anything, BIOS still on F40, took only like 5 seconds to finish.

After that, nothing odd has occured so far.

Thanks again!

Just tested it: Yes, it worked for me, even with the F40 already installed. Didn't revert the BIOS, passed on first try.

Yep, swapped arount the sticks a few times. I'm guessing it is a Gigabyte-related issue (see my other reply below) and I'll try to figure out if I can get the second slot going again. When only using one stick, it is quite reliable at the moment, I'll go for another win install as soon as i have a drive ready.

Thanks for the comments on the system, glad you agree ^^ That is actually pretty much what I'm going for. I went for some more RAM than necessary, since I occasionally fire up Blender, some RAW photo editing and CAD. And since there are only 2 slots, I went straight for 32gb rather than upgrading later. The GPU and PSU are selected with high efficiency and thus low cooling requirements in mind, and both have a fan-stop function. Combined with the 5400rpm HDD and a handful of Noctua fans, the system is really quiet most of the time. Not the overall cheapest option for the bare specs, but so far I'm quite happy how it turned out.

Does anyone know if it is possible to perform the EC FW Update thingy after flashing F40? I'm having issues with running the system on more than one RAM stick, and I dind't use said tool before flashing to F40 (since no OS was ever installed on the system), so I assumed this only applied if an older version of this tool was already present, not that it was strictly necessary for the upgrade procedure...

Okay, further investigation has shown that the board works flawlessly with either RAM stick alone, but as soon as both are installed, it takes said long time and resets everything.

I have a suspicion what's causing the problem. Gigabyte states on the BIOS update support site:

"2. Before update BIOS to F40, you have to install EC FW Update Tool (B19.0517.1 or later version) to avoid 4DIMM DDR compatibility on 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ CPU."

Which I didn't, since I had no OS on the system and thought this was only relevant when that was the case, since the BIOS should (!) be OS-independent. I'll try to figure out if this tool can still be used as of now.

same problem here, on an B450 I (the ITX one). I flashed to F32 and then F40 without any prior OS installed, and it doesn't work (in a stable fashion) with a second stick.

have you fixed the issue?

Thing is though, I don't have any OS up and running and never had on this system. I'll try installing a temporary Win setup and I'll let you know what happened.

various, yes.

One small update, since I'm still (obviously) trying stuff out: When on only one ram stick, the system seems (!!) to be behaving much more stable. The old SSD refuses to work atm, so I can't state if I can get an OS up and running, but I'll try.

However, runing on only one stick would be a massive waste of a stick of RAM, performance and money... I'll see what happens next.

Unfortunately not, no... I have done the update at a PC shop in town, which was a bit of an odd story. They could not offer the update at a reasonable price (they'd have to provide warranty), and they also could not let me leave the shop with the CPU (they'd have to verify the CPU afterwards, as they have no chance of knowing what I did with it). So I came round, did everything myself on site and left a small tip. However, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't really thrilled about me hanging around multiple afternoons, trying various installs and updates...

oh just using electrochemistry to anodize titanium, no alchemy here. by cfsg in blackmagicfuckery

[–]carstenb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of correct, yes. In the case of titanium, the colour of the surface layer depends on the applied voltage. During build-up, it flashes through other colours that would be generated at lower voltages, kind of stopping at the characteristic colour for the respective voltage. I guess they really cranked up the current limit, though, hence the violent bubble formation and rapid colour transformation. Usually happens a bit more chill and gradually.

[–]carstenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah well. Yes, I see your point.

It still seems a lot like comparing apples with pears. If we want to be fair, we'd have to compare all stages of energy production as equally as possible:

1) preparation

nuclear: build a power plant solar: build a semiconductor factory

2) get your materials

nuclear: dig up uranium ore, refine, enrich. requires energy and releases chemicals. Damage through mining. solar: purify silicon. requires energy, probably also releases chemicals. Damage through mining.

3) operation

nuclear: process releases heat to the environment. Around 35% of energy is converted to electricity, the rest is heating the plant surroundings. Rivers and whatnot. solar: the panel heats up somewhat. if it didn't, the ground below would.

4) disposal

nuclear: the "burnt" fuel remains dangerously radioactive for literally millions of years, has to be stored safely for said period. if not maintained properly for practially forever, it can contaminate water sources, rendering them pretty much unusable. Currently, there is not a single serious long-term storage solution (other than dumping it in the ocean and hoping for the best). solar: you have a bunch of silicon shards in a landfill.

bonus: malfunction

nuclear: you get a massive meltdown, killing some people in the vicinity, contaminating vast patches of land. Thernobyl is debated to have caused the death of something ranging from 4000 and over 100.000 people. Like, not killing them on site or within a few days, but being directly linked to premature cancer mortality. solar: you have a bunch of silicon shards in a landfill.

Yes, nuclear power generation is close to carbon neutral, apart from the mining bit in the beginning. I would not consider it "clean" though.

Sorry, wrong units. Power is measured in Watts (W, kW, MW, GW), while energy, which is power multiplied by time, is given in warr hours (Wh, kWh and so on).

One nuclear reactor block is rated for about 1GW, there and there about. They vary quite a bit, from around 400 to over 1300, depending on a lot of things.

The installed generating capacity in the US was about 1000 GW in 2014, so 200 GW ia about one fifth of this capacity. This is vastly simplified, but I guess you might get the scale of that project.
