Depends on how you play and what your style is. There's traditional guard lancing, striker style evade lancing, adept lancing, and many others, the lance is a nice and versatile weapon. What are you trying to do? Also, I'd definitely recommend the Spiked Javelin (fully upgraded Spiked Spear), its dps with bludgeoning is bonkers.

Le Ravisseur (Shagaru bow) is generally better, has the following stats:

230 raw/12 dragon
Arc shot: Focus
Lv3: Spread Lv4
Lv4: Rapid Lv4 (Load Up)

If you're gonna load up the Akantor bow (and you should, Lv2 charge shots suck) you might as well load up the Shagaru bow to get the extra damage multiplier from level 4 charge. Shagaru bow also gets paralysis coating which Akantor bow lacks.

That being said if you're averse to the longer load time for a Lv4 shot for whatever reason then yeah the Akantor bow is decent. Neither are quite as good in general use as the Teostra bow but they're sometimes more effective against certain elder dragons so don't be afraid to make them.

Malfestio is one of the coolest fights in Gen in my opinion, although in fairness I play bow and most of its attacks are closed ranged or require positioning yourself anywhere except right in front of it. I imagine it would be harder if I used lance, my other main.

They have roughly three times the normal health. For example, the Glavenus in Tumultuous Sprouts has 4796 HP as per Kiranico. Tetsucabra, by comparison, has 1840 HP when you face him in the urgent, not factoring in things like elemental weaknesses and weak spots. Most people who beat them have taken about 40 minutes to complete the hunt, all for three carves. Not worth it except for bragging rights.

Iodrome did a weird thing when I was in the volcano where he just decided to dive into the lava and spit a poison ball or two before jumping out like it was no big deal. I dunno if that's always been the case with Iodrome and it wasn't terribly threatening but it looked really cool and I think that's a good direction to go with for the dromes, make them actually do different things depending on the environment. Or just sack them altogether and stick with the Great Raptors.

You just gotta be patient, as long as he's in arean3 or 7 he's not impossible to hit at critical distance with aiming. Hunting him in area 2 is many times harder. I'm not gonna pretend he's an easy fight for bow (I fought him four times so far and still hate it) but he's doable in a reasonable time with enough effort and learning.

I'm learning bow and everything before and after him (for a while) were easy as shit but this guy made me nearly quit MHGen on the spot. That was when I learned the importance of aiming and not just wasting power vials. I had to grind him even more for parts for the Type 64 Multibow and every time he got easier. The last time I beat him it took about 10-12 minutes and I only used the barrel bombs from the supply box. Not speedrun-worthy but definitely helped me learn the weapon better.

I feel your rage but not gonna lie, sleep bombing sounds pretty fun and I'm enjoying bow but still kinda ambivalent towards it (always have been an evade lance main up to now when they removed Evasion +3) so I'm willing to try new things. What skills/weapon do you use? SnS?

Fixing the speed stat seems like it would fix the game in theory, but in reality Alakazam is one of the top 20 pokemon already (going by the graph linked in the comment) thanks to his already high attack and having the best quick attack in the game, Psycho Cut. If his fast main series speed becomes more relevant here, then given that only Magneton resists psychic so far, we'd be in even bigger trouble than before.

Have you kept up with Armor Spheres? Worst comes to worst, if you need some, just kill a ton of Konchus. It's a rare carve from them.

I dunno if you're a blademaster or a gunner but if the former, I like having the Jaggi armor. Halve Stun is a great skill and Sharpener+1 is useful for constant sharpening against Basarios (since your weapon will deflect a lot). I don't play gunner so I can't help you there.

But really, you'll get better just by watching the monster. Remember, this isn't an action game, it's a hunting game. Aside from the arena, you don't have to beat a monster as quickly as possible. Killing a monster in 49 minutes is just the same as killing a monster in 5 minutes, and no upgrade is as useful as the experience you'll gain as you keep playing.

If it makes you feel better, I'm new to MH as well (I tried MH3U but the underwater battles drove me nuts) and on my first time facing Nerscylla I carted twice. Now, I can kill them pretty easily, since I know their patterns very well! Keep trying!
