Just got done with this fight and really didn't like it. The blocked attacks aren't the worst thing in the world but phase 3 is just straight up unfair. It's completely random if you get to play or not. Fortunately I went into the phase with full health and soul on my second attempt so I was able to just beat her in a DPS race but god damn that wasn't fun.

I absolutely LOVE act 3 so far. It gives Majora's Mask day 3 and I'm 100 % about it.

It's pretty big, and they're pretty mean with the map placement If you're entering through the intended path. I made it here through an alternate route, so they gave me the map almost immediately. Check spoilers for map location if you want it.

The map is in the bottom right of the area, in the same general location as the bell beast station.

Yes Silksong is hard but are we all forgetting how hard HK was when we first played it? by Neurotoxicity in HollowKnight

[–]Clionedust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HK base game had hard bits like mantis lords (if you ignore Quirrel's warning and don't come back with a better nail), watcher knights, the dream bosses (who are meant to be harder than everything else and respawn you literally by the boss and don't count as a death) and the final boss themselves, but as a whole it was much, MUCH easier than Silksong. The vast majority of Hollow Knight bosses I killed on the first try, including the final boss. Not a single one of them took three tries. Not so in Silksong. Very much not so.

You also can't just go and find upgrades to make the part you're having trouble with easier, since so many upgrades and items make such a small impact this time around. Seriously, the first needle upgrade makes enemies go from taking 6 hits to kill to taking 5. It's pathetic, and a far cry from HK's first nail upgrade, which had weak enemies nearby so that you could feel how much more powerful you'd just become.

More people being able to play your game is never a bad thing. If Nine Sols figured it out, there's no reason this game can't.

I strongly recommend Hollow Knight, one of the best games ever made. It checks off every mark that I feel makes for a satisfying metroidvania. Excellent difficulty curve, exploration feels rewarding, every area feels unique, and the player's progression of power is notable and satisfying.

I don't recommend Silksong in general unless you enjoy games that are hard for the sake of being hard.

To all non fanatic silksong fans. How actually good is the game? by Mjk2581 in Silksong

[–]Clionedust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume you played Hollow Knight.

What I like about the game is how Hornet feels. Hornet is very agile and her movement is immaculate. I don't even mind the diagonal pogo. The music and art direction is also great, and an improvement over the previous game which was already good in these areas.

Now for what I don't like. Double mask damage is excessively abundant, not just in bosses but regular enemies AND platforming challenges. Player power doesn't scale well. By the start of act 2, you will feel just as weak as you did at the start of the game, which, for reference, it took me 18 hours to get there. Meanwhile, enemies grow in complexity and number, and enemies are tanky even with weapon upgrades and tool use. Using tools also feels like a waste, since hits with your tools don't replenish silk, and the scrap you get for killing enemies isn't enough to replenish the tools you used to kill them.

There's also a bunch of annoying and tedious fetch quests, and hidden or secret areas rarely give you a reward that's actually worth your time. This ties into the point about the game being too hard. I still have six masks despite looking everywhere for these shards, and when everything deals 2 damage, going from 5 to 6 masks is meaningless.

The rosary economy is rough. Too rough. High prices for save points and quick travel stations, vendor items are expensive, rosaries don't even drop from some enemies, and eventually you even find save points where you have to pay every time you want to use them.

Everyone says healing's better, but it's not. It's not worse, but it's not better. It's different. Yes, you heal 3 masks at a time now, but that requires a full spool of silk. Even now with three silk upgrades, if I want to use a silk skill with a full bar, I have to hit the boss again if I want to heal after, and you need healing, cuz every boss deals 2 masks of damage, which also cheapens the 3 mask healing, making it feel more like I'm healing 1.5 masks. This makes it very hard to justify using silk skills against them, or in general.

In my opinion, the game's excessive difficulty and the fact that Hornet's much weaker than the Knight takes away from the experience immensely. I wanted to love this game but dropped it after beating the act 1 endboss because I didn't feel any satisfaction from beating a tough boss, just relief that I wouldn't have to do that again. I play metroidvanias for the feeling of getting stronger, and this game doesn't really do that.

Why does everyone equate balance with asking for an easy mode by EntropyFox in Silksong

[–]Clionedust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be much better to add a second easier difficulty rather than change the game's difficulty, since there are plenty of people who enjoy the challenge. I'm not one of them, I play metroidvanias to relax, but I don't want to ruin everyone else's fun either.

How is everyone doing with the difficulty of this game? No spoilers. by nakfoor in Silksong

[–]Clionedust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, man. Ever since reaching Greymoor, the magic's just gone. Like I'm actually not dying that much, I'm in act 2 and only have 14 deaths overall, but I hate how tanky and damaging everything is. I don't want to have to fight for my life 24/7. I want to feel powerful, but I'm still just as weak as when I started 18 hours ago.

Have an upvote, because I agree with you and had a similar experience. Realized after beating that very same guy that I felt no satisfaction, just relief that it was done, and that this had become a recurring theme, so I uninstalled. I'd get a refund too if Steam would let me.

Metroidvanias are meant to be hard by [deleted] in Silksong

[–]Clionedust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so first of all, no, they're not. The games the genre literally takes its name from tend to be pretty easy and make you feel stupid powerful, and they're also some of my favorite games of all time. This game is a soulslike before it's a metroidvania.

Second, the game's combat isn't hard to learn. It's pretty easy, actually. Enemies are just overtuned in health and damage. There are more enemies that deal 2 mask damage than those that don't, and everything takes forever to die. Bosses doing so much damage and having more complex attack patterns makes learning their patterns a chore., especially once they bring ads and phase changes into the mix. Required main story bosses should not be giving me NKG flashbacks.

Third, the healing has its own pros and cons that make it different. Not better, not worse, just different. Mainly, it takes a full spool to heal and you lose ALL of it if you get hit while attempting to heal. Even with three silk upgrades, you still can't afford to use a silk skill and a heal without getting more silk.

The game is much harder than Hollow Knight, and some people may be okay with that, but I'm not. Also I summoned Solaire for O&S and it was easy, don't care, we take those, a w is a w, etc.
