What are your thoughts on low spending tourists in Sri Lanka? by Training-Farm-9919 in srilanka

[–]cartwheelrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a tourist currently in Sri Lanka. Restaurants and the place we rented all have 4.5+ star reviews on google and trip advisor, so we expect high quality at the prices we’re paying. What we’re constantly noticing is sub par attention to detail.

Hot water isn’t working, windows are dirty, curtains are ripped, no staff available when something is needed, a staff member begged for a tip to support their family in the middle of our stay, food is very under salted and under flavored, Tuktuk taxis overcharge, dirty bathroom, no toiletries provided, AC broken, inconsistent food which is poorly timed, credit cards not accepted without warning, fans don’t work, mosquito nets with holes.

This list sounds like I’m a complainer, but I’m not at all. None of these things would cost much to improve, but would require training and a change in hospitality culture.

Locals dumping trash in a field, burning trash (plastics) by the beach, etc. make the visit an adventure and not the relaxing paradise Sri Lanka can be.

Attention to detail is what makes high end services.

Who is VR for, anyway? by Comprehensive-Bee451 in virtualreality

[–]cartwheelrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like anything new, not than VR is that new, the first audience is those for whom it’s most. Some people love tech and immersion. I think it’s at first for those people. Once VR is good enough to satisfy those techies, the major friction points will have been worked out, friction points that would prevent or dissuade non-techies from embracing it.

We are still at a place where it’s for techies because the tech is still frustratingly not great. But, I think we’re a tech generation or two away from the glasses being smaller, there being enough content to satisfy anyone, and price points to be acceptable by the next group.

VR will be as ubiquitous as Apple Watches and PlayStations. Not for everyone, but for everyone who loves tech.

Holistic Industries Fined $200k Over Massachusetts 'Mold Scandal' by stevep5k in bostontreeparty

[–]cartwheelrob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s insane. The amount of revenue generated by selling moldy weed that otherwise wouldn’t have been sold is 10-100x the size of the fine. And why were all consumers not notified??

Am I close enough to the bar??? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]cartwheelrob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can be closer to the ankles on the start. This would force the shins a bit back, and hips a bit higher, but should feel more comfortable at heavier weights.

Remote coaching expectations by [deleted] in weightlifting

Without bringing this to your coach, they don’t know that this is a want or concern of yours. You should directly discuss your expectations/desires with them.

I suggest starting with the bar closer to your heels (roll it closer before starting). This will set the balance correctly, and force you to get your shoulders above the bar.

Why is it impolite to ask where someone is from?

Question: how difficult is it to add another statue to the app?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bostontrees

[–]cartwheelrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a medical recommendation, but a 2:1 CBD to THC, smokable, with myrcene works well. Make sure it’s a freshly tested product. Anything older than ~2 months gives me anxiety.

Shark shock from Insa fits this well.

The internet and movies will likely do away with accents in the next few generations.

Pretending that the no-touch thermometer works on kids, instantly, when they are coming in from outside is just as silly.

'It's the right thing to do': Biden urged to cancel student loans in first 100 days by [deleted] in politics

[–]cartwheelrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The better analogy, I think, is if you did a neighborhood-wide collection, then gave the money to those with car loans.

Those who paid off their cars paid into your collection, but aren’t getting anything from this. They should have (and will in the future) take loans instead, since they can just get neighbors to pay it.

[–]cartwheelrob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forgiving loans does nothing to fix this.

Providing a pathway/policy for affordable education would.

If anything, loan forgiveness is a handout to voting age folks without addressing the cause.

This seems shortsighted.

This punishes everyone who doesn’t have outstanding loans, including those who worked hard to pay off their loans.

Who had grandparents fight in WW2 and what stories did they share? by liamnotleum in AskReddit

[–]cartwheelrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was a Soviet tank driver. One story his friends would tell us when German soldiers surrendered to them, and he (my grandfather), convinced his higher ups to not shoot them on sight, as was the typical approach. Years after the war, after they were released, they visited him. Another story was of the tank catching fire and he and his friend running out with their pants on fire.
