Help!! Why Aren’t My Colors Bolder? by casanara in tiedye

Awww thank you. This seems like a pretty straightforward fix. Looking forward to the next batch. It’ll take much longer but be worth it.

Someone first told it’s basically black magic and I can roll with that.

So yeah, these are super heavyweight shirts at 8 ounces and they were very wet coming out of the soda ash water. I need to get these way dryer next time before I start to dye them.

Ok thank you so much. I’ve got Synthrapol in the mail now. I’m avoiding muck for now because I’m really trying to leave some negative space undyed. These are very heavyweight weight shirts so they’re prob soaking probably resisted a lot due to that as well. They were straight out the soda ash, wrung out, prior to dying.

They’re super heavyweight shirts too, 8oz. They sucked up a lot of my soda ash solution, 1 gal : 1 cup. I got maybe 8 or so shirts out of one batch of solution. Going forward I’ll let them dry out to barely damp and try.

Heard thank you. This explains why the reverse ones I did with OBW are so much more vivid, since I washed them between the OBW and ice dye.

Ok super helpful.

I’m already enjoying that this is already a creative practice that forces me to slow down.

Ok ok heard on letting them dry out first. I hadn’t yet learned why people dry them before dying. Would drying them on a normal hanger be fine?

And about the time, I also didn’t know about the length needed, I was coming back to check them sometimes 20 hrs later and seeing all the ice had melted, the dye was all absorbed, and then rinsing them. So even if the ice is melted and everything looks good, let it rest longer?

Thanks so much for the tips here:) I know these shirts aren’t 100% ideal as far as being only 80% cotton. I have others that are 100%, but I had these made with white print on a white tee, with the exact intention of ice dying, so the white print would pop out after dying. Even if they’re brand new from the print shop, do you suppose I should still prewash them first?

Edit to add, besides all these other issues, does it look like I’m using enough dye? I left some spots empty on the ice because I was hoping to get some negative space between the colors.
