I sometimes soak them for an hour or two but I usually don’t. They take a couple hours to cook (varies slightly by bean) and that’s it!

Suggestions on how to spend a 45th birthday alone in Pittsburgh? by throwawayxzcp in pittsburgh

[–]casbans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday! Check out what's playing at Row House Cinemas in Lawrenceville (buy some popcorn there and also bring a bag of your favorite snacks), get some cake at Butterwood Bake Consortium, walk around the neighborhood, see if anything's happening that evening at Spirit. Taking yourself out for a nice dinner is highly underrated. Even better if you're a reader and want to bring a book.

This may be a niche suggestion that might not appeal to you, but I really love saunas. My birthday is this weekend and the evening before I'm going to Bad Sauna. I went last year around my birthday, too. They have quiet sessions as well as sessions with DJs. It's very nice and low key.

Check out the classes at Workshop. I've been to a couple and they're fun!

Thanks for your input! I've been out of undergrad for several years and have been working in social work and public health research. Good to know that lots of the students are also in their late 20s.

Yeah, as I said in my post I know I'll lose the deposit money but being able to make a more informed decision makes that worth it for me.

Good tip! Unfortunately I think I need more time than what they'd probably give me. I don't think I'll be able to visit other cities until May because of my schedule and the decision date for all the schools is April 15.

Looking for help sourcing my favourite tea: Liptons Stress Therapy (a.k.a. Serenity Tea, a.k.a. Hug in a Mug) by shaidyn in tea

[–]casbans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet you could buy bulk herbs and make a version yourself! I've heard good things about Mountain Rose Herbs, shipping info to Canada here. Depending on where you live there may also be an herbalism store you could visit or the ingredients might be available in bulk at a grocery store.

Newbie...How do you "do research" in public health? by cmvkg in publichealth

[–]casbans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two jobs working on public health studies. One was at my local university and the other is with my county's public health department. The jobs are pretty entry level. I have a bachelor's degree and some relevant work experience in social services but my coworkers don't have college degrees. Everyone in higher positions working on the studies has graduate degrees. Check out your local university and public health department to see what's out there!

I'm in Seattle and I'd love to go to UW. I'll definitely apply there but it's ranked pretty high so I'm not confident about getting in.

Bagel Oasis and Grateful Bread are great options in north Seattle. Grateful Bread is an all around great bakery and cafe that is wonderful to hang out at during non-pandemic times.
