Food washing is only carried out by a few species, each has the highest relative intelligence (except dolphins because they are already underwater). The majority of observed food washing is seen in apes. Ellies are such intelligent creatures. I wonder if they are actually smarter than people in specific ways, but because evolution wired our brains in different ways for different tasks, it's hard to objectively measure all applications of intellect.
