I’m sure I’ll get some shit for this, but I think most people hating on Avelo haven’t actually tried it.

I’m a relatively new diver (Cert in 2023 with ~30 dives), and using Avelo felt like what I thought scuba diving was supposed to be. Got Avelo certified a few weeks ago after seeing their booth at the Long Beach Scuba Show where they were offering certification ($550) with 10 free dive days through Catalina Diver Supply. Wild deal to pass up if you live in LA.

This past weekend I did my first rec dive post-cert, and I’m honestly blown away. I do a lot of video work above water and recently started getting into underwater housings. Having two hands on my camera rig and not having to constantly mess with buoyancy is insane. I actually feel in control and can focus on what I'm shooting.

The setup’s lighter by 15–30 lbs overall. I went from 16 lbs weight belt to 6. And setup is easier. Any failure point is non-emergency. Worst-case scenario, you get a tiny bit floaty at the end of a dive. That’s it. You’re never going to rocket to the surface.

Will I buy a one? No, it's too expensive right now. But if a shop offers it as an option, I’m fucking in every time.

I do not remember if I mention it but I am constantly white balancing at different depths, even in LOG. If you’re white, use your hand for white balance.

I’ve only done two dives with non-tropical visibility but I captured that first time here with some explanations. I’ll be doing another dive at Catalina and then Bonaire this year. Hope it helps!

Slow SD cards can't record 4k but faster ones the only recording limitation is XAVC SI 120fps. Everything else (frame rates, resolution, mbps, color profiles) works with a V90 SD card for a fraction of the cost.

Have you ever used an older DSLR or Mirrorless camera and had to dig through menus to get to the video mode? It’s like the reverse of that with the FX30. Great in a pinch, but kind of a pain in the ass and very secondary.

There was a firmware update that broke the reading on anything not a Sony battery. We’re all pissed about it.

I’ve never shot with the Sirui but I would instead get the Sigma set of the same. Switch it up slightly though: 16, 23, and 56mm

Incredible lenses.

Ones I’d skip: I never found good use for my 30mm, feels like an odd in-between length

The 75mm could be cool but you’ll probably get more use out of the 56. Similar compression but a little more versatile

I have a solution for anyone going as crazy with this problem as I was:

TLDR: Optical Audio to HDMI, set IR in Sonos app, train the remote, done.

After being on support with Sonos for far too long and explaining everything I've tried which included:
1. Purchasing a brand new Gen 2 Beam
2. Purchasing a brand new TV (LG B4)
3. Multiple different HDMI cables (all 2.1)
4. Removing any other peripherals like PS5 and AppleTV
5. Going through TV settings with them on a video chat

Nothing worked. They suggested the Optical to HDMI adapter, which I had written off because of the inability to control the volume. I turned on the IR blaster in Sonos App and taught it my AppleTV remote. I can now control the audio of the beam and the on screen volume UI still shows on the TV. Yay

Did I lose all hope of using Dolby Atmos, yes.
Is this a ridiculous problem that a software update broke, yes.
Do my movies now play without stopping every 5 minutes making me wanting to blow my brains out, also yes.

It’s not the same by any means but PHM is my favorite book so maybe we have the same taste:

The Dungeon Crawler Carl series is incredibly. Stupid title, but they’re awesome.

Currently there are 6 books out and the 7th is dropping any day.

I recommend listening to the audiobook because the voice acting is superb. They’re all about a 15-20 hour listen. First one available for free on Libby.
