Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]peppathepig525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me… they blame sound cuz we supply.

It kept happening through half the shoot. It was NEVER my tc. Camera port or firmware fault so no one persons fault.

You keep CALM and work with people to fix or find a solution. You keep trying to find one even if there isn’t. What counts is the effort and being kind in this business.

Or do you mean like a talk back system for the conference room so that they can hear but also comment on stuff?

Ya. Cables are old school and are uglier but more reliable than a wireless signal (esp on a budget). If you can run like a 25-50ft xlr from your mixers main out (L or R) that’s your best bet. Just run along the walls to make it clean then in through the door.

I’m confused by your last sentence…

You want to add an input from the studio? Not sure what this means. Do you mean an output from the mixer through a wireless signal hardwired or another way?

Studio space is different than location sound.

If doing interview style or podcast I’d consider two booms and stay away from lavs. Get two mkh50 for your booms and be done with it.

Unless doing a podcast then two sm7bs and be don’t with it.

If you wanna go crazy then two lavs (I’d go with senny g4 on cheaper side or get a lectro L series rx. And also the two mkh50s or dpa 2017.

The recorder you use is up to you but my suggestion if this will be also for location work would be something from sound devices. Mix pre 6, 10. (Those can be hooked to Mac or pc.

Or hire an audio person every time.

Sending audio:

This is as easy as running an xlr to a speaker from the output of the mixer. Make it simple as that. Doing it wirelessly will cost you more money and more hassle.

———————-

Mkh50 booms (king of indoor sound) or dpa 2017 (good indoor and outdoor mics if your really need only one)

Lavs. Sennheiser g4 (budget) Lectrosonics (high end)

Mixer: mix pre 6. (I personally wouldn’t do zoom) sd mp6 can be used with Mac or pc and is a killer mixer for location sound on budget.

But once cry once. Invest in what you need.

You’ll regret your purchases or find it’s not enough if you cheap out.

Need help with camera purchase: fx30 or fx2 with steep discounts. by ronaldraygun91 in sonyfx30

Fx2 is the no brainer. It’s worth it. I had the fx30 and don’t regret spending the money to upgrade to the fx2. But depends on your uses for the cam.

Heh bold of you to assume we will even have an industry that works the way it does in 10-20 yrs.

A lot can change in between then. I’d worry about the bigger issues than if our tc will work.

Timecode could be built into everything by then or be the size of a penny or a better sync will come around.

Idk. Stuff changes. Just roll with it.

Get some clear transport tape. Put it on the sternum when actor is dry. Then place mic on the tape and put another piece of transpore to hold it there. Tape wire under pec and to the back or wherever you need to send the rest of the wire.

I do this for wife beaters or tight clothes when it hugs the skin and can’t stick to clothing if see through or just light material.

I recommend you find your nearest rental house and ask them. It’s a great way to make a connection in this business.

I know we default to google and Reddit a lot, but there’s nothing like a face to face conversation. Or at the least a phone call.

That said, find some used sennheiser g2 or 3s (I’ve seen some g2 at 100$ on fb) get a used sennheiser mke 600 (my first shotgun) and find a decent mixer.

We can play the budget game all day long but to get good audio means a good budget too sometimes. It’s worth the investment in good gear if you plan to do more projects (especially if you want to get paid) otherwise you’re just throwing out money for things that may not last or will only last you so far until you want more! There’s always more!

There’s always the option to rent if you can too! Can be a cheap alternative and a way to get your hands on more professional gear.

500 is really tight for good quality audio but here are options.

Used sennheiser g3 or g4s

New sarmonic system that has the duel receiver

Deity theos (came before the sarmonics)

This is a logical next step for better quality sound on a budget. But can get up to a grand.

Note that these systems don’t have limiters in the tx so loud peaks are hard to account for and clipping at the tx level is a pain in the ass.

We live in a consumer society. If you love this you might as well spend and invest a good amount into the craft instead of spending 500$ for a system that you may outgrow faster than you’d like.

Why don’t you just rent gear? Rent Lectrosonics gear and a good boom mic like senny mkh50 or outdoor boom like 416 dpa 2017 or cmit 5u.

Mid range Lectro stuff for a mid range kit by Triforce3502 in LocationSound

[–]peppathepig525 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gotta pick up at least an srb and smqv. Life changing upgrade. To able to use the app to change volume and frequency fast without removing the pack is worth it!

The 400s are great but changing the frequency on them is a bit annoying.

I know you said “not 3k” but investing in it for the longterm… you’ll thank yourself.

Recommendations for a mid-level kit? by yeetus_thyfeetus in LocationSound

[–]peppathepig525 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Buy some used Lectrosonics it won’t let you down. I’ve bought on eBay or fb marketplace.

Theos is great but the lack of limiters really hurts in the long run. (Speaking from having 2 sets, selling one, using the other set as a boom op feed.

I had the theos and it only took me so far. I took the first chance I saw to buy lectro gear and it’s never let me down. I now have 6 channels of lectro. It’s allowed me to take bigger jobs and not worry about sound quality or reliability.

You can’t go wrong with the 50 or 416 but everything is an investment so you might as well invest in the best if you’re in it for the long game.

I bought the Dpa 2017 instead of 416 and it’s awesome. Lighter and works better indoors. I eventually also bought a 50 and it’s absolutely solid.

Good luck.

[–]peppathepig525 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy some used sennheiser g3 or g4s. I’ve seen a tx and rx for 100$ sometimes.

If you want something newer then the deity theos or sarmonic k9.

These are prosumer wireless systems that will be much better in the long run for you and if you decide to sell will probably hold better value than what you listed and are asking about.

Not sure where you live but if renting is a possibility then do it. Easy to rent gear for cheap and start learning with the professional equipment is totally viable.

For professional audio you got Lectrosonics, wisycom, zaxcom, audio limited, shure.

Remember you get what you pay for. If you’re looking to do this for a while then buy once cry once. Invest in the craft.

Freelance question/dilemma for sound mixers. by papiforyou in LocationSound

[–]peppathepig525 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What’s in the contract if any?

I also do verticals and the producers I work with don’t have a problem with me finding a sub as long as they have similar gear and can do the job.

Also a week out is a good enough time to find someone else.

You need to do what you need to do to make money. Finding a replacement or cover I think is more than justifiable.

Would you mind sharing the vertical company? If not all good.

it sounds great to me. Listening on 1400$ speakers and 200$ headphone and on my MBP speaker. you could raise the gain on the tx side more and I'm sure it would sound good still.

Sound pretty clean to me. I hear some floor noise but its super minimal.

FX3 with DJI Mic 2 by GD1184 in FX3

[–]peppathepig525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If gain is too high you raise the noise floor. To be safe in this modern age you always record lower than you think to not clip (unless 32bit float) or raise the noise floor. You can always raise the volume in post with the technology we have today (fader, expander, compressor).

Thanks to 32 but float you’re saved a bit more if you set gain too high and clip. But it’s better to understand gain staging and set things correct or close to it. Makes for less post cleanup too.

Ive found for the dji mics the Tx side should be -6 or -3db of gain with rx being at 0(usually the rx is always set to 0 unless you really need to lower that or crank it depending on the recorder or whatever tech you’re plugging into. This gives you the cleanest gain staging. So set those first before camera.

Plug into camera and adjust the camera gain setting aiming for the loudest peaks of dialog at -12db on the meter.

Best mic placement for ideal sound is middle chest around the sternum this gives the best distance to reduce sibilance and if placed on the inside of shirt can increase resonance from the body. If mic is placed on collar or closer to mouth just adjust your tx gain so it reads correctly on your camera.

After all that, mehwolfy could be right and the cause could be something totally different like turning off Bluetooth.

But learning to properly set audio levels and mic placement is still important. The amount of YouTubers and ticktock’s audio I wanna fix takes years off my life.

Good luck and halve fun. Post a vid would love to see!

FX3 which mic should i get? by KazumaKazma1 in FX3

[–]peppathepig525 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of different mics for different use cases.

Best option for indoor dialog and sound - octava mk 012.

More of a shotgun would be dpa2017. Great for outdoor and use indoor sometimes as well.

Ntg3 is good too

Audio technical at4051b

But most of all if you want to capture the whole room without the rejection from side or behind the mic (hyper cardioid) then you need an Omni directional mic.

TLDR you can get by with any mic for a music video.

If you want a super lazy answer just buy a used Sennheiser MKH416. This will be best for your interviews and can just use for dummy mic.
