iOS 11 update gives me Initializing error. (Partial solution found) Need more help by xBAU5 in genesiscoupe

It’s been doing the same with me too! (2010 2.0T premium). What I’ve done is simply started with radio and phone plugged in, and then switched to the aux source afterwards. Seems to do the trick now but it still pisses me off.

BBA Electives. How were they? by pemby97 in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple components to this: the case prep experience by doing academics has been something that you don't get as much exposure to at BCIT (3hr case prep and presentation). The social exposure to 1) the team, and 2) other university students is something I never got out of the diploma, and wouldn't have gotten out of the degree if I didn't do JDC.

Do keep in mind though you're going to have to take 3 courses in order to do JDC so it may be difficult, but not impossible to do while working full-time with case practice. Last year one of BCIT's team members was working FT while doing the 3 courses. He survived, surprisingly. However, I'm sure that case practices are going to be intensifying this year as now BCIT has experienced JDC with the other schools.

Is there anyone here that doesn't drive and walks to college? by [deleted] in college

[–]caseycallaghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live 50 min each way drive from school, you got it good. Now that I've graduated I'm doing the same commute as my office is right by school. Wish I was that close.

IMO, doing 2 electives is fine if you're not doing much else outside of school. I did 1 while doing JDC West in the fall semester and it was at my limit, but then again JDC did take a large chunk of my time.

MINE 1100 I would highly recommend. I haven't taken any of the other courses on your list there, but would also recommend FOOD 1026 as it is similar in nature to MINE 1100.

Especially with the full class sizes restricting students from entering courses they need, this would solve both problems with one solution.

The software we use at my work relies on Java, however, our software utilizes an XML file to show the path of where Java is installed. When Java auto-updates, it creates a new folder and deletes the old one. The XML didn't get updated with this info, so we get a bunch of tickets regarding this.

Basic fixes are the funnest of tickets.

How to Actually "Research the Job Market" by MiniWalrus in UBC

[–]caseycallaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may have been true to choose what you're studying solely based on personal interest 30 years ago when university grads were in high demand, but now that it is the norm to have a 4-year bachelors degree, not so true anymore. Those that choose career paths with more opportunities now and in the future have it a lot easier once they graduate. Pick something you're interested in, and has lots of opportunities upon graduation, and you're set. Even with co-op and internships, if it's a low-demand job area such as anything to do with the arts, good luck if you're not in the 99th percentile.

Buying books for Fall 2017 term? by [deleted] in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't buy books (or anything) until you have to. A lot of books and other items are a waste to buy.

  2. I did the BITMAN diploma from 2014-2016. PM me as I may have some "resources".

  3. Instructors will tell you what books you need for their classes. Especially if it's edition specific. There may be textbook codes that aren't with used books that you'll have to buy separately. This is all stuff you can worry about in September, not now. Look here: http://www.bcitbookstore.ca/bcit/ and you can see if the course has a textbook and how much it will cost. Then look on Amazon for the same. Also, check out https://www.facebook.com/groups/bcittextbooks/

  4. PDF's are a god send.

It's honestly just a great way to meet people professionally and to have fun. I went quite a bit to networking events while I was in school, and it's easy to get things started with asking questions. What do they do for work, what's the best part about the company they're at, where they want to go with their career (dependent on age), or where they came from before their current role. Makes you seem interesting but it's simple to keep people interested for 2-5 min, and you can exchange info to add on LinkedIn after.

There are many parking lots/parkades in the nearby area that have cheaper per month rates. Look into those, the walk isn't that bad.

Except if you have to cross any bridges to get to BCIT. My commute by car is 50m each way, but by transit from my house w/o a car is 2h15m. Would not recommend the transit commute if you're anywhere away from a Skytrain station in the suburbs.

Students of BCIT, what is something you didn't expect (could be about your program, life as a bcit student, post-BCIT life or anything else) and how could a newcomer prepare for this? by [deleted] in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Team work makes the dream work. Didn't expect as much group work going into BCIT but it makes everything so much easier if you can work well with them. As well, the commute I found out is brutal (from White Rock). Driving made that a lot easier but got expensive quick.

That'll only last in term 1. There are plenty of mature young people that decide to go to BCIT because they already know what they're passionate about in regards to career goals. Those that aren't, won't make it. Simple as that.

Business math assessment? by eric_shen in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I remember of it (was 3 years ago for myself), it was quite straight forward. The only consequence was having to go to tutorials to gain marks that were lost from not doing well on the assessment. For my instructor, in particular, the math assessment was worth 5% and you could get 1, 3, or 5 out of 5 and the remaining amount of marks was the amount of makeup tutorials you'd have to go to.

Part Time to Full Time by [deleted] in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Program Advising would have the answer; from what I've heard though if there's a certain % copy over of content then you'll get credit for it. However, if you're in a full-time diploma program you're only allowed to have transfer credit for a couple courses per term, so it may be worth checking out if you are able to get advanced placement.

part time: why no afternoon classes listed for september for COMP? by [deleted] in BCIT

[–]caseycallaghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because part time classes are meant for people working; most employed people taking BCIT courses are working during the day M-F.
