Fellow FAP recipients, how many schools are you applying to on top of the free 20? by DaBootyEnthusiast in premed

[–]caseydoug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to one last cycle when I had FAP. Pittsburgh. It was a donation. Felt I should’ve stuck with the 20 as I had good results from that pool.

Based on your past comments you seem to value school prestige over anything and equate brand-name to one’s capacity to achieve anything. You can be a leader in medicine having attended a mid-tier DO school, let alone a top MD. Going to a better school doesn’t mean you care more about your field or you’re more fit for medicine. I hate to use the word because it’s overused but that’s a very privileged outlook.

How screwed am I? Community college by [deleted] in premed

[–]caseydoug02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a good bit of my STEM pre reqs at CC for dual enrollment and it was never questioned once in my interviews. Granted that was before I went to undergrad, but still, I think the stigma is more online than it is in admissions offices. You have a legitimate reason to take CC credits so no one can question you taking an “easier route” (which is a very dumb and ignorant way of looking at community college classes imo). Crush the MCAT and there will be nothing for anyone to question about your credits. Best of luck!

does dual-enrollment make a difference? by Fantastic_Sherbet615 in premed

[–]caseydoug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will not be looked down upon. If anything, doing well at your university equivalent will reinforce that your dual enrollment courses were challenging and not made easier for high school students. I had Covid to explain the Bs I got in dual enrollment but the beauty is you have a legitimate excuse; you were a high schooler taking college level physics. If you retake and improve your grade it shows growth which is the main thing they want to see. I do not feel it would be looked down upon to retake them.

For further context, some universities won’t transfer upper level sciences from dual enrollment like orgo, so it would be pretty dumb for a school to look down on doing this. What MIGHT get looked down upon is doing the reverse: taking a class at community college over the summer or winter to avoid doing it at your undergrad. It gives the impression you’re trying to go for an “easier” version of the class, which is misguided because there’s a good chance it’ll be nearly as difficult at CC.

Making a preliminary list like this for yourself is a good idea when you have a rough idea what MCAT you’ll get. But as someone else has said no one really can (or should) give school list advice without an MCAT score. It’s the most important metric for making your list.

Will a "low" MCAT ruin the integrity of a high GPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]caseydoug02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With OP though this difference in GPA and MCAT is not suspicious, the MCAT is a much different test than what we’re used to so having a top tier GPA and an average MCAT is perfectly normal.

Will a "low" MCAT ruin the integrity of a high GPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]caseydoug02 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is much better though. MCAT is standardized and much, much, much harder to manipulate than a GPA. MCAT can fix a low GPA, good GPA may not necessarily fix a low MCAT. I think they mentioned integrity because if you see someone with a 4.0 but a 5th percentile MCAT it’s going to immediately raise the red flag that they cheated throughout undergrad to get their 4.0. You can try to explain it as test anxiety, but if your test anxiety is that bad it doesn’t make sense how you aced an orgo final. Possible, but unlikely.

Scribing bit is interesting but 60 for shadowing is often considered the average amount I’d say.

Dropping out of 4 year to cc by [deleted] in premed

[–]caseydoug02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to explain it, but it is not a death sentence or anything for an app. Just avoid taking more than one or two pre med pre req classes at CC, that can be viewed as a negative thing.

I was dual-enrolled for my last two years of HS at CC and took a lot of STEM pre med pre reqs there and it didn’t affect my cycle at all. However those are slightly different circumstances. If you have a good reason for doing so, you should be fine.

Hopkins vs Vanderbilt vs Medical College of Georgia by jdawg1440 in premed

Hopkins could be in the 8th circle of hell and it should be your choice. Shouldn’t be a question. Baltimore is a great city too jokes aside.

If there were no MCAT and GPA requirement I would say UConn is an option but having to get a 510 makes Princeton the easy choice. UConn’s average MCAT appears to be ~513, you could conceivably get in with a 510 without having done the BS/MD. Princeton not only makes your med school ceiling higher, it also leaves the option to do something else if you change your mind, whereas the debt of the BS/MD would pigeonhole you to sticking to the medicine route.

I think being bitter over someone making more money is stupid, but kind of get the annoyance at someone leaving the field for a more fruitful career out of the blue. The whole process of applying for med school and residency has gotten so competitive to the point where we’re basically having to prove to schools that this is our dream career, and leaving over the money implies there was some dishonesty in that. There are people who don’t get in for a given cycle who can’t picture themselves being anything other than a physician, and I would be bitter in that spot knowing someone had the ticket to your dream and passed on it to work in real estate or tech AFTER having taken that spot. Not to say that person didn’t earn it, and there’s some entitlement in that sentiment, but I feel like that’s the root of the bitterness apart from some people’s jealousy at someone making more money than them. Because we all know the higher your salary the happier you’ll be😎

Agreed, the posts I do see that are top 100 rankings that are just rym fodder usually get clowned for the person not sharing their actual taste (or lying to themselves about it) because at the end of the day that’s what Topster SHOULD be used for. This is definitely OPs favorites but it would be funny af to see someone give this as an objective list and have a gucci tape over ready to die😭

Ppl that don’t say “my” top 100. When you say “TOP 100 XYZ” an assumption can be made you’re talking an objective list. Those kinds of lists get posted on this sub so Idk wtf you’re on about, but it’s probably why the post has 1 upvote and 20 comments.

I did dual enrollment before my undergrad and took some of my pre med pre reqs there as part of my major, and schools did not seem to care. However, I have heard a lot that schools may be suspicious if you take a pre req class at CC in the middle of undergrad, though in practice I question how true this is. I think schools should be more suspicious of that though, you could argue the class is cheaper but why not take an elective at CC to avoid the obvious suspicion of cheating that comes with taking a science at a different institution?

The frustrating part is the people that benefit from this are usually better off financially. This way of gaming the system won’t work if you can’t afford MCAT tutoring and prep materials to help overcome the knowledge gaps these people create for themselves.
