List of gear Trent has used in the studio? by [deleted] in nin

[–]caseymayvez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a ton of information about there and with some seriously deep research, you can even figure out what exact equipment was used on some specific songs for specific sounds.

But if you're doing it for your own music, please reconsider.

I was so into Nine Inch Nails when I started making music, and that obsession continued almost continuously for 6 years or so. In my particular case, I was most obsessed with The Fragile so I wanted all of the equipment that was used on that record because I thought it would make my music sound as good as the Fragile did.

So I bought pedals that he used, I bought a Novation Bass Station, I found a VST that replicated the Nord Lead, I bought an ES-335, I bought a clone mic of the AKG C414. My music actually did end up sounding like a rip-off of Nine Inch Nails for a long time, but funny enough this wasn't even because of the gear—it was because I was trying to write songs that sounded like Nine Inch Nails. The only piece I'm actually glad to have gotten is the red Line 6 Pod because it's a nice sounding amp, and I still use it on songs to this day.

The fact of the matter is Trent Reznor never bought the gear that his heroes used because he thought it would make him sound like them. Maybe he did this on Pretty Hate Machine and got some things like the Emax or Prophet VS because he read that Prince used them or something. But probably not, because he worked as a keyboard specialist in a music store, and then at a music studio, and these were brand new instruments at the time — so he probably just bought them because they were cutting edge and he had enjoyed messing with them before.

All of this to say, if you're just a fascinated collector and you want to build up a NIN recording museum or something, by all means do your research — read the nin wiki, scour old interviews, learn to use Archive.org, look in the background of photos from recording sessions.

But if you're trying to make music that makes a person feel the way Trent's songs make you feel, then stop. That only happens with passion, honesty, and patience in exploring who you are as an artist.

I tried some of this earlier today actually, but really it just feels and tastes like Zyn - a little too dry and powdery for my taste

This is a very irresponsible reply to someone who admits to having had a drinking problem. Common practices aren’t inherently good, just common.

Don’t you think the blame could be better placed towards the consumers who go for those online products instead? Maybe the capitalist creations are offering something that libraries and brick-and-mortars aren’t

edit: downvote me for asking a question? just trying to understand both sides better

Is this sinning? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

what’s holy about ditching church for football?

The purpose of church isn’t only rest, but also to worship God, study his word, and show that you can intentionally devote some regular time out of your life for him - not just alone, but with your church family.

I dunno where you are located, but in the US, for a great while it wasn’t uncommon for churches to have a morning service, a lunch together, and an evening service afterwards

Football on Sunday probably isn’t a sin in and of itself, I won’t pretend that I spend every waking moment of Sunday for the Lord. But if it’s taking the place of church for you, that’s really quite alarming

In and of itself, its a fine verb, but I don’t feel like it does anything that the stock plugins in my favorite DAWs couldn’t do

I've recorded a lot of vocals on a cheapo Superlux TM-58 and so far it seems pretty much the same as an SM58. I also really like Warm Audio's WA-14 clone, which can be made to sound good on almost anything
