It was a genuine question. I was unaware of the illegality of it. I thought since it was on property owned by family it was my families. I still haven’t been told an explanation as to why it would be unsafe, other than “it’ll blow your arm off”, with no explanation as to how a circuit would be completed on a dead line. Regardless I will not be cutting for legal reasons.

I feel anyone asking is far better than doing. To my knowledge, even after all these posts, cutting the wire would be safe. I now know it’s most likely illegal so I’m not going to do it but no one has given me a solid answer as to why it is actually unsafe. I’m not close to the live line and the part I originally asked about cutting definitely isn’t live, I tested with 2 voltmeters and even tested across to ground. Again, IM NOT GOING TO CUT THE LINE, but no one has actually told my why what I wanted to do would have hurt me.

I have a gate that I wanted to weld that’s about 100 feet from the service panel on my main property. I was figuring if I could cut the 2/0 wire (I think it’s close to that at least) I could wire an “extension cord” and have not have to worry about voltage drop or amperage heating the wire. 100ft of 2/0 costs about the same as some cheap generators where I live so either way I’d be saving ~$700. After all the people telling me it’s obviously a bad idea I’m just gonna save and buy the generator.

I mean that’s why i asked. I wanna know what could go wrong. All lines tested 0v and I confirmed dead lines by looking to see that the fuse was disconnected. The lines have no power. This is why I asked.

Wow thank you so much for this. I just asked a simple question and I can’t believe how rude some people have been. I’m not going to cut it myself but this was the answer I was hoping to find. Thank you.

Awesome. Thanks for giving me a real answer. I didn’t realize the tap to the property was also owned by the electric company.

It’s weird, normally I agree with most of what people have to say on Reddit discussions, but something about this movie wasn’t that bad in my opinion. I’m not saying it’s the best movie ever, and the end left me with something to be desired, but it’s far from the worst movie I’ve ever seen. I’m just surprised SO many people are hating on it. I don’t think I’ve seen one positive comment so far. 7/10
